I use the Boss Bass EQ to put back the low end into my Soul Food overdrive pedal. I was the touring bassist for The Miracles for a few years so effects weren’t a big part of that gig but I used the lighter distortion of the SF to put a little almost unnoticeable amount of gain into my tone as it really helps me get that Jamerson sound. It also helps the sound cut through, but it did lose low end so the EQ really helped there as a bit of a boost. Now I use it for all kinds of stuff and it especially helps with my C4 synth pedal as some of those presets can get a bit wild if you don’t tame certain ones down a bit.
I prefer a bass-specific EQ pedal. A multi-purpose EQ pedal will have a bunch of bands that aren't useful for bass. For example, I noticed that the Sonicake pedal has 8K and 16K. There's no reason you'd ever need that on bass. I'd rather have more frequency choices below 3k. I also don't get why so many bass EQ pedals have 31 and 62 as their first two bands. I've been mixing music for about four years now. And all I've got to say is that 40 and 80 hz would be far more useful. 41 hz is the frequency of a low E. That's a super important frequency on bass. 82 hz is up one octave. I can tell you that the area I most consistently boost in mixes on bass is 80 hz. 60 hz is where the kick drum lives. Sorry for the long rant, but the tendency for all bass EQ pedals to have the same frequencies annoys me. It's like they saw the Boss EQ pedal that came out 30-40 years ago and just copied that. The only bass EQ pedal I've found that actually gets it right is the Whirlwind 10-Band Bass EQ. It feels like it was designed by someone who actually has mixed music before. Unfortunately, it's very expensive. It sounds amazing, though. I don't regret the purchase at all.
31 is the fundamental of a 5 string bass. And it's an EQ pedal, not a boost pedal, the low ones are as much there to be turned down as to be turned up. If your kick drum lives there, you can take those frequencies out of the bass guitar. I would assume 16k is mostly used to remove hiss from a horn, if at all. But 8k-10k is something I enjoy having and make ample use of for melodic parts.
Idk man, I think something like a Bass specific 7 band EQ is more limited. If you have the Boss GEB-7 for example, then the notes exclusive to the 5th string are out of reach if it only goes down to 50k, this is also true for drop tunings. On the other hand, it's important to have those high bands available (8k and over). Since they aren't the core spectrum of the bass you can typically cut them and reduce hiss, fret noises and undesirable overtones.
This is quite informative. I’ve actually have tested out the use of distortion with eq on bass. And this method is usually tricky and I did everything I could to get to that sweet spot. And I was able to make it work. Not exactly an easy method from the beginning, but I’ve made it work. And as for the use of an eq pedal as a cab sim, I’ve actually have never thought about that. I do own a preamp pedal(usually for ampless recordings) and I did thought about at one point do I need a cab sim pedal, but since an eq pedal can pretty much give you the same results, I might consider buying an eq pedal for that purpose.
I just got an eq pedal. I like it!! First time I connected it, the Rumble 40 no longer made any static noise from simply being plugged in. Why could it fix that? I don’t know. Once I connected the bass, the tones were very easy to control. Wow
I’ve been running the boss bass EQ for a little bit now to use it as a cab sim like you were saying. Also another plus live is being able to leave my amp EQ and noon and adjust it all at my feet
yeah I also do your 2nd use. Sometimes it can't just be the different frequency ranges that they would interact with in different way and as my preamp has one extra band with that making 4 total bands it makes it easier to do finer adjustments. It'd also help while going to different studios or gigs with the different amps there, leave them at noon and rather do the adjustments from the device that you're already familiar with
