    Cheers again for popping over to Hull, Ashley! Really appreciate it 🤩 I’ll have to pop over to Liverpool in the future, have you direct me around some of Liverpools own Nightmare Junctions and see if my driving is any better since getting your guidance 😉🔥

      Handbrake application is horrendous, your wear the ratchet on it and I've know some that have done it and been unable to release the handbrake. Push button, then pull and release button once pulled.

      Just on this, my manufacturer handbook actually tells me not to push the button when applying the handbrake on mine so it's not necessarily a bad thing 👍🏻

    I enjoyed that one Ashley. If everyone drove with the standard of Charles, there would be less stress on us HGV Drivers. That was a nice drive around Hull. Great job Charles, and you Ashley. 👍

      I used to deliver around Hull in a 3.5t van so I know it a little especially the bits where Charles was driving along Newlands and Princes Avenue. It was the finding somewhere to park that I hated.

    Really looking forward to watching this video in it's entirety. Watched the first few minutes and already got a warm and fuzzy feeling. I have an early start to yet another event tomorrow (at London Olympia)so have to have an early night tonight but definitely won't want to miss this. I'll also look up Hull Dash Cam. Loved the Dashley Neal reference. How come no one ever thought of that before! Either way, kudos to Charles for doing this. I'll be very interested indeed to hear what he had to say about IAM Roadsmart when I watch the whole video.

    22:45 This is so true. Ever since watching you, my driving standards improved massively and I do occasionally have that attitude. I then have to remind myself that before that, my driving was horrible and I was also constantly speeding. Focus on what you can do yourself, not what everybody else is doing wrong.

    If you cant get the opportunity to do an advanced course, its still well worth investing time to study the Roadcraft book. Learning more about the system of car control, IPSGA, will really help with planning your gear changes at hazards and with cornering. Well done @dashcamhull on taking on feedback in a constructive way

    That junction was a favourite of my driving instructor for demonstrating how to observe and position properly at a slightly different junction. We’re talking late 90s when I was learning and it actually helped me to think about the space to take rather than the vehicles. When it’s busy I can understand what Charles is saying, which is more about the psychology of road users and wanting to get going but feeling frustrated.

    Excellent video as always Ashley and Charles, nice to see my home city put in the spotlight on your channel. Nightmare junction can be difficult at times especially when you let lorrys out like you did and it breaks down in front of you, happened to me once years ago. If you ever come over to Hull again id love to have a drive with you and show you some sights of rural East Yorkshire and bit more of East Hull.

    Another great video, Ashley! Thanks. I love your little tips about mind set.
    I'm from Hull (although I've haven't lived there is 24 years). Yes, the Humber Bridge was an icon and I remember it being built and when it opened. You used to have to pay quite a large toll to get over it as well.
    I still get back a few times a year, and I've always thought Hull was the worst city I have ever driven in!
    I agree with the the Charles, no-one EVER uses the out-of-hours bus lanes in Hull. 😂 In fact, if you DO use them, the other, unobservant drivers sometimes get really angry and will often deliberately drift into the buslane to stop you passing or not give way. (Oh, and "nightmare junction")

    Although being thick skinned, it's interesting to know that alot of the time, you take on board many of your viewers' comments and critiques which may influence how YOU change your own perceptions and way to approach certain situations and practices, as well as you influencing viewers to do better in their approach. A symbiotic relationship, indeed.

    Nice to see this happen. Everywhere has its own special place with some insane nickname because of how people treat it. I also very often have to think about space. Even more so when I'm crossing the A45 in rush hour traffic at a roundabout which links up with ryton, ryton on dunsmore, Wolston and the A45 itself. I'm usually driving the same routes every week so I'm at high risk of falling into that complacency we all fall into knowing the roads and driving them every day. Wouldn't mind going on one of these drives myself and just in general having some comments made on my driving and how it could change if anything needs to change.

  • @WayneTulip-zm9gw
    @WayneTulip-zm9gw 4 місяці тому

    We all know to give way to the right at a roundabout unless road signs and road markings say otherwise, on the approach to a roundabout not looking at the cars coming around but judging if you have enough space to go or not is brilliant advice, I’ll definitely use that from now on in my driving.

    Great watch, didnt know who Charles was before now but i see alot of similarities between our driving. I also get anxious driving and feel i can never fully relax always been overly on edge if that makes sense, this also affects my speed through junctions - approaching too fast therefore trying to do everything all at once including observation which is causing me to make poor decisions. It's something im working on never been diagnosed with ADHD but its made me think.
    Always learning ☺️

    Very nice drive, better than most. I believe junctions can only be a nightmare if you think it’ll affect you, by trying to look ahead and being prepared, you can avoid things from happening. I believe there’s always room for improvement and constantly try to learn from other people’s mistakes and train yourself to be a better driver which equals to be a better person.

    ADHD is an interesting thing when it comes to driving. For me, it doesn't hinder my driving, especially under blue lights. I do find queuing a nightmare, so will often choose a longer back route if it means I can keep moving.
    I know some people with ADHD struggle with things like changing gear, however I do wonder how much of it's down to instructors getting people to change down through the gears, rather than the simpler advanced driving 'Speed, Gear, Accelerate' approach to gear management, which of course is exactly what Ashley uses, all be it without the 'IPSGA' mnemonic.
    I feel breaking a junction down to an IPSGA style approach is so much easier because all you are dealing with, control wise, is your pedals and steering. You only change gear once your speed is set, and it's one movement with potentially a block change, rather than multiple gear changes. On top of that, if the junction is busy, the only gear change you make is likely to be when stationary. If you do stop, then the next gear change isn't likely to be until you are committed to moving through the junction.

    One thing that annoys me is these people that follow the rules to the letter in the comments like say I you are driving down the motorway and someone wants to join their attitude is to prevent the merge rarther than make it safe. Yes the person joining has the biggest responsibility to join safely and to not cause the traffic on the motorway to slow or drastically change position . Say that though if you can assist in making the situation then do it. I don't mean at the last second and cause danger . More like 1/2 a mile back checking and going there is traffic on the slip road there is no 1 immediately passing or I'm going to let this car pass as the have a nice gap behind I can use then the person on the slip road can join safely and risk is reduced. Or making sure you have a nice big gap in front etc. Where some the attitude is do nothing because it's not in rules. There is no rule saying you can't make the situation safe and there is no rule saying do nothing and make dangerous. I believe everyone has equal responsibilities tp make safe

    Important to stagger your position in relation to the vehicle in front don't follow in its tracks. Then your view is usually opened up a lot more and often this will enable the vehicle behind to see in front of you easier.

    Great video.
    Nightmare junction.
    1. People hanging over the giveaway line…
    This is common in Wiltshire on any junction. Which means turning into that junction you have to go out round in a sort of semi circle.
    2. Nowhere near as bad as I thought….just busy.
    There’s one in the next town from me which I sometimes have to drive which is hell on earth, especially when taking 1 specific route….which is the route I need. I know several people who will not even drive it. That town is a fraction the size of Hull.
    ----
    Watching this, 2 things come to mind….
    If most of your driving is in those situations, do you need a powerful car?
    Ditto, what it is the actual point of driving a manual (stick)?
    -soon to be irrelevant, due to hybrid & electric cars.
    I also leave the little extra gap in traffic and start to creep slightly in advance of the car in front moving.

    • @davidrumming4734
      @davidrumming4734 4 місяці тому

      The creep speed on my automatic is fairly slow so not a problem if you need to stop.
      But on automated manuals, the creep speed maybe too high….some go upto about 8mph. Not good. It’s like on or off.

    Just watching the video now and it’s great advice as always. Great tip about the zig zag lines for a crossing however I teach all my learners and PDIs a better tip imo which I think you’re actually using.
    An earlier observation of whether there are roads off to the side of the lights is something you’ll spot earlier than the road markings.

    What a nice watch this is from two chilled people 👍
    As someone who analyses their own driving a bit too much (and sorry Ashley for all the clips I send you) I can honestly say don’t dwell on the mistakes too much. By all means have a think about how to improve for next time but over thinking can have a negative impact where it is possible to become overly cautious instead of proactively aware
    Take everything Ashley says on board and keeping doing what you do, it is amazing 👍

      @@ashley_neal Indeed it is and took me a number of years to be able to let most mistakes go quickly. • @shm5547

    33:00 this should probably be a permanent bus/cycle lane. It doesn't really make sense to be limiting it to rush hour times. As we can see here, it's not busy outside of those times, it doesn't make much difference to drivers if it's available to use, but does inconvenience cyclists.

  • @Kromaatikse
    @Kromaatikse 4 місяці тому

    With those "recommended crossings", I honestly thought they were speed bumps until you started talking about them. Similar markings are used to outline them on the Continent, while the triangular markings are instead used at give-way lines.
    It's plainly obvious that neither drivers nor pedestrians have any idea of what they're supposed to be for, and the combination does not make for a safe and useful crossing facility. If they were all repainted with zebra stripes (and everything that goes with them), that would make all the difference.

  • @wrightwoodwork
    @wrightwoodwork 4 місяці тому +1

    The thing is people don't understand out of hour bus lanes I think that's a good thing as it means when they are all stuck in a queue I can go past and safe waiting in a queue especially when it's busy. No point queuing when you don't need to

    So far my thoughts are with the coasting up to junctions with clutch depressed. Not mechanically sympathetic behaviour. If you're not going into, or out of, moving off, or changing gear, then stay off the clutch pedal. In my opinion 🫣

  • @i3d3
    @i3d3 4 місяці тому

    Engine braking towards a junction or roundabout is something I like to do a lot of times, as it means I have to start slowing down earlier than I would if I just chose to use my brakes.
    I know there are people who say engine braking saves your brakes and all, but that really only applies to long stretches of hilly roads where you would otherwise keep the brakes on for prolonged periods. At normal flat areas, you're really wearing down your clutch and gear syncros (expensive to replace) to save yourself your brake pads (much cheaper to replace)... It doesn't make that much sense, so I've recently began to make an effort at avoiding unnecessary downshifts if I know I will have to stop for example.

    • @androidcaller7902
      @androidcaller7902 3 місяці тому

    28:50 I disagree with Ashley about downshifting. If you left the car in fourth gear as you were coming to a red light and something untoward happened and you needed to hit the gas to escape a situation, you will lug the car or possibly stall the car and they you are in it. If you downshift to fit the speed of the car, you would be able to hit the gas, especially when leaving a good space in front of you, to get out of the way and avoid being a casualty. One of my daughters has ADHD and she has a commercial driver's license and drives a semi (lorry) for a living. There is so much that goes into driving that she rarely has to "come back into the room" because her attention is on so many things at the same time. Good on you for doing so well!! ADHD is frustrating for you and can be the same for those around you.

    Nightmare junction, I don't think, is much of Nightmare. It's really being aware that if you are in the right lane going left, just be aware that people on your left may decide to change over to the right lane after the turn. Personally if I was in the right lane going left I would have my left indicator on then the cars on the left I would basically try to be beside a gap so they can slip in either in front or behind so a staggered formation

You could also look up IAM instructors and go out with them for a few lessons. @RegLocal is a good channel to watch for more advanced stuff. However, I think you'd be better learning from Ashley as his style of teaching and Road Craft is far more favourable to today's driving.

    Hi Ashley, re 5:50, if you're still doing the 'driving viewers cars' series, I have a Mazda 3 you might want to try.

    There is nothing wrong with your driving. I wouldn't be worried to get in a car with you

    7:33 I tend to find cyclists make the best drivers, but it shouldn't take constant abuse and a near-death experience. Unfortunately, at the moment in the UK it is a case of 'if you can't beat 'em, join 'em' and Charles is right that you get far less trouble as a driver on UK roads.

    I am careful of people I see driving with hats on. In my experience of 50 years of driving people with hats on are usually terrible drivers. Watch out for them and you will see.

      it all depends how you do it but even with cars and vans from the last 20years it will most likely not effect the gearbox or engine if you gear down. i was taught to gear down, have had multiple vans and cars all with over 100k miles since 2005, motorbikes with over 20k miles, clutches, engines and gearboxes all still fine for their age. its still a good skill to know for an emergency situation. changing the oil in an engine and gearbox regularly is far more important to get a long life out of it.

      This is I'm afraid a common misunderstanding. If the gears and clutch are built to take the forces inherent in accelerating and driving the vehicle with no problems and no significant wear then they are equally strong enough to handle the same forces in slowing a vehicle. Whereas brake pads are explicitly designed to slow a vehicle by slowly wearing away. Done properly gearing down will result in less wear and damage overall. Roadcraft used to advocate gearing down as much for this reason as well as for the reason of always being in the right gear for your current road speed for maximum control. The change to advocating just using the brakes was done to simplify the system and to make the same basic driving techniques applicable to both manual and automatic vehicles. The "less wear on the gearbox and clutch" was a post-hoc additional justification added by people who hadn't thought through the mechanics of how gearing down works.
      I was taught during the time when gearing down was the preferred technique and as a consequence have always done that. Now, "anecdote is not evidence" and all that, but in something like 40 years of motoring I've never had clutch or gearbox problems on any cars or motorbikes that I've owned including one car that I owned and drove from 1998 to 2022. That car got a new clutch and brake pads shortly after I bought it in '98 because the 1st owner wasn't a paragon of driving technique. It retired in 2022 still on the same clutch and brake pads.

    As soon as I saw the camera in the direct view of the driver I thought well he must be showing how illegal it is to have it there
