Anoka- sounds of the Asian underground! My first, along with many other people I'm sure. Just happened to come across it and liked the way it looked, and the info. I was glad I did. And it led to a whole series of musicians and disks. Wonderful tabla player. I've seen Zakir Hussain many times; even visited his class a couple of times in Berkeley. Talvin is very enjoyable and intriguing as well.
I think this is wonderful. It is a great blend of styles, and shows a large amount of creativity. Definitely played an integral role in Table Beat Science.
I understand why the Indian community doesn't dig his playing. There are hundreds if not thousands of extremely skilled tablas players on a high level of performance which never get out of India or not even their home state. And there is Talvin Singh. He is incredibly creative and has experimented with traditional music in combination with a lot of other stuff like even electronics. Maybe he isn't where the traditional tabla player is with his skills but he is opening new paths which are closed to the traditionalists who hang on to the old ways. And we know what happens when you hold on to the old ways. They become an object admired in a museum.
"And we know what happens when you hold on to the old ways. They become an object admired in a museum." wonderfull. Keep on moving just like soul to soul said it. This guys amazing.
He's able to reproduce the sounds of drum & bass (which EDM producers usually play through samplers and drum machines) with his bare hands on a drum. That takes an immense amount of skill.
I love that he's bringing a western twist to eastern music, freakin' A man. Talvin is one of the people who inspired me to learn Tabla, him and Beats Antique. They shifted my passion for electronic music into something more analogue.
110% agree with you. Talvin Singh inspired me to learn and play fusion tabla since 13yo, I'm 28yo now and still play tabla fusion everyday. All my videos are on insta @naweedshams.
amazing, very humble true player......i only got 14 yrs o new delhi gharana mostly kaida tabla under my belt and i'm always stunned to hear he only practiced an hour or so a day.....it takes me 42 mins just to get warmed up! His playing is so genorous and teaches as it goes......Kehbhaaaat
I see a lot of mixed responses here, appreciate both. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. Although, what some of the critics don't know is that Talvin is making India proud overseas. I strongly agree with Sudamani Muth, Talvin was most recently awarded the OBE by the Queen of England for his contribution to Music. He is also knows as the Father of the Asian Underground Music.
ushnish sarkar I don't understand what you are saying. Maybe there are rules as to how to play the table and this guy is probably not following them. But then again who needs rules if it sounds this good?
The Tablas which he chooses are too out of tune it's weird...and all those moments when he is looking his computer to select tracks or sounds are strange and empty. I don't think that's very interesting now...I liked what he was doing before now it gets a bit empty.
Basically talvin learnt from punjab a small city in India but he aint beat Zakiru sain d world top most tabla player or tari khan ma fav1 from pakistan lol

Sudamani Muth
totally agree with you, of course he's not tabla maestro, but he got good and solid technique melt with his own amazing aesthetic taste .

ushnish sarkar I don't understand what you are saying. Maybe there are rules as to how to play the table and this guy is probably not following them. But then again who needs rules if it sounds this good?
Not necessarily rules but knowledge. It does not sound good at all for north indian tabla players standart.

It is not because you play tabla you play indian music. So listen without context.

Some serious haters in the comments here. Im guessing they are all ustads and play better
The Tablas which he chooses are too out of tune it's weird...and all those moments when he is looking his computer to select tracks or sounds are strange and empty.
I don't think that's very interesting now...I liked what he was doing before now it gets a bit empty.
I'm a "westerner", and I don't find it enjoyable watching him play it either. Even though i won't do a better job.
His hand moves fast, that's about it...no substance here...it's kind of a joke...play a good kayda or something man...really...all gimmic !
Smithful lol.....so what do you play?
Smithful people are so easy to criticise and yet they have probably never lifted or played an instrument in their life.......
Kayadas are too much boring.
gd for nothin learn more talvin lol
can you even play like him....,
aw yes by al means am much beta rather then him wen it comes 2 tabla fella mark ma words lol
Basically talvin learnt from punjab a small city in India but he aint beat Zakiru sain d world top most tabla player or tari khan ma fav1 from pakistan lol
al i would say bout Talvin dat hes kinda average jus so so lol
jake osborne of course no match for zakir ji
but you need to respect all the musicians no mater how bad they may be....
so be respectful...
highly boring
+Dhiya O'Brien let's hear your performance then
A particularly poor performance. Truly bad.
Truly & rightly, art is in the eye of the beholder. Where here it's completely lacking.
