  • Extremely rare footage of the legendary rock band Chicago as they hold a press conference at the Akasaka Prince Hotel in Tokyo, Japan on January 7th, 1984. This event promoted their highly anticipated tour of Asia that same month.
Chicago was riding high after just finishing recording their 17th album, Chicago 17. See the band in peak form during this era, with members Peter Cetera, Robert Lamm, Bill Champlin, Danny Seraphine, Chris Pinnick, Lee Loughnane, James Pankow and Walt Parazaider. Their energy and talent is on full display as they speak with reporters and gear up for their 1984 tour.
This is an exceptionally rare behind-the-scenes look at a legendary band at a pivotal moment in their storied career. Apologies for the poor video quality, but this footage offers an incredible chance to see Chicago candidly interact with the media before their 1980s tour. Chicago in 1984 was on fire and this Tokyo press conference captures them at the height of their powers.

Interesting that Pankow said they support one another’s projects outside of the band yet they were terrified of Peter cutting a second solo album.

Because Peter was their identity at the time, he was the voice and they needed him more than they would admit.

They were very close like a family. But one year later Peter departed from the group.

well you can stil be a family and venture off on your own its how they handled it that made them family or not and they do not talk about Bill a lot either and he was crucial to their sucess in the 80s

It’s weird to see Peter with the band. I guess they hated each other so much, there was never a reconciliation again. They never were seen on the same stage after this tour.

The only concert from that time I have is the 1984 Japan show. There are some clips on UA-cam of another show from '84 but I haven't seen it besides what's been posted.

15:26 - "Excuse me, Mr. Pankow and Mr. Cetera! Do you have something you'd like to share with the rest of the class?" 🤣🤣
EDIT: Oooh, things got a little touchy about Sun City. Before today, I didn't know Chicago had ever played there.

Yeah, I wonder what those two were discussing. Too bad, they couldn't get along later.
