- The Maple Leafs have lost in the first round of the playoffs in seven of the last eight seasons, is there any reason to believe this year will be any different for Toronto? Mike Johnson and Craig Button weigh in during Thursday's One Big Question.
I saw an old timer (my age) wearing a Leaf's tee shirt the other day, it read : "Please Lord just one more cup before I die"
Different? Ya sure. Ending with the same results? Yes most definitely.

Samsonov played great in game 7 last year save the last goal. They couldn’t score 3 goals in a game 7 to win. End of story.

@@tdunph4250 Sammy allowed one goal during regulation. Where were the high-paid offensive stars that are supposed to come through. These guys can't score more than 1 goal in Game 7? They're getting paid like they're part of a dynasty, but in the big moments, they're nowhere to be found.

If you mean by “this year” - the regular season - the Leafs should be all good again this year. 😀

Tanev and OEL (if they can stay healthy) will be really useful in the playoffs compared to what the Leafs have had in the past. Tavares needs to play less - he and pacioretty need to be power play specialists. He's too slow to keep up in today's NHL at 5v5.
I'm surprisingly optimistic as a Leafs fan this year. Haven't felt this positive since we first signed Tavares.
Different players. Same result. Apologists will laud the Core 4's precious offensive stats in the regular season, but then find excuse after excuse to try to defend why can't score in the opening playoff series.

I believe winning that division would be a huge help. People are going to chirp on here but they are all haters. The reality is they aren't getting blown out in the playoffs. It is always seventh games and one or two goal losses. The goaltending , along with the core fours stubbornness playing on the outside has been a big issue. You have to go to the dirty areas come playoffs. the odd man rushes and shots from the perimeters don't get through come playoff time.

@@cchapman7101 It doesn't matter that they're not getting blown out. What matters is they aren't winning. And the problem has not been the goaltending or defense. The problem has been that their precious offensive stars, that produce so much in the regular season, can't score when it matters. This team hasn't scored more than two goals in 12 of their last 14 playoff games.
They needed to trade Marner or maybe Nylander. Marner is allergic to the dirty areas of the ice.

Telling him to dig out pucks would be akin to forcing a 150lbs string-bean wide receiver to go play running back & try to slam the ball up the middle of the opposing D-line every snap!
Give Marner a 'big angry boy' line mate who can do the digging & protect that tiny child's scrawny @$$ and leave Marner to set-up everyone for easy tap-ins.
Treliving doesn’t have much of a track record. More of the same for the Leafs this season.

Same old, same old. Insufficient talent AGAIN on defense, playoff performers not present AGAIN on this team. Likely too many players who have the Leafs on their list of teams where they don’t want to play. But, here we go again with the media doing a bang up job giving this team a chance to go deep into the playoffs, likely a first, MAYBE a second round exit. Marner will get more money than Nylander but he likes a FULL SUMMER OFF…
A lot depends on the health of Tanev, which would make me nervous. ECF is their absolute ceiling. I can't imagine them beating the NYR or Florida, and they'd likely lose to a healthy TB
I think they will score a lot less, but their Goalies and defenseman are the best in a long time. Thank god Samsonov is gone.

Nothing of significance will change until they get rid of that Bum Marner. Don't trade him, DON'T give him even a qualifying offer. Give him ZERO, and let him walk. This will do two things: Give the Leafs a chance to win the whole thing with an extra $11 million in Cap space to get a REAL Goalie. And more importantly it will confirm to the rest of the NHL that this kid is a dressing room cancer, and is a $2 million a year player at best. I mean who care if he gets 100 points, but chooses to play shinny when it matters most. ZERO heart, deserves zero pay
You want to know the best way to get an elite goalie? Draft and development. They've spent way too much in trades on goalies over the last 20 years... Let guys like Hildeby, Woll, Stolarz and Akhtyamov duke it out for #1 over the next couple years
The most important position in hockey is the Goalie. And yet these teams refuse to both pay a good goalie when you have one oe fill the post properly when you don't have sufficient talent between the pipes. A real hread scratcher. This is the reason both Swayman and Shesterkin are making them Revaluate the goalies pay structure which has been peanuts overall. Other than Price and Bob the goalies have been getting burned.
Are you out of your mind? 100 point players are almost impossible to find. Montreal would trade their entire team for Marner.
