Kasparov couldn't help himself but turn his head. lol Same thing when a really pretty woman passes you by. You cannot help yourself but you have to look again.
This just reminded me -- back in the 70s the BBC pioneered chess tv with players voice-over their recollections of the game, and utterly fab it was too. Miles wasn't yet a Grandmaster and Short still a schoolboy; mebbe that's why it was called The Master Game :-) If you hadn't retired from play you could bring it back for primetime air. I'll be reckless and say I'ld even dust down my telly and buy a license for it.
@Geoff M We had something similar here in the netherlands. I think the show was called 'Man en Paard' by Hans Böhm. Something like that. I cannot remember the exact name. And for some strange reason I cannot find it anymore??! Anyway, what I want to say here is, these shows were not meant for advanced players. It was meant to popularize the game. And they did an okay job at that. We had to rely on Daniel and I remember Schach der Großmeister with Hort for our chess dosis. I don't even speak a word german. lol Now, everything is so much better with the internet and I'm so happy Daniel is still around.
Brilliant combination. Finally you have to reveal your secrets. Alone from this game I learned some important things: - you like your bishops - split rooks are not always bad - we know from whom Alpha Zero got the h4 idea 😀
I appreciate your modesty in not wanting to brag about your games but is time to see a little of your successes and failures. I like how you brought to up both your thinking and your emotions during the game.
Thanks to your Patreons! What a good game! And that story about Kasparov! At the end, as every tournament player knows, your worst enemy is not opposite of you. But between your ears. Therefore it's great to see games by normal super-heroes. Not only by aliens like Tal, Kasparaov and Carlsen.
Yeah! Fantastic game, Qd4 is very beautiful and to see it from so far is great! Please show more of your own games, really interesting and fun to hear the stories "behind the stage".
It's a pleasure to see one of your games, Daniel, very nice! Your humility is most refreshing but there is true cause to be proud of this one, especially when the greatest living grandmaster (at least at the time) does a double-take! Thanks again for sharing and keep up the great work. You are my favorite chess channel, hands down. Cheers from Houston.
wonderful game. you waited to the middle game and found a beautful way through. and more so your technique at the end was crisp and secure. those days of mental clarity and enterprise
I cannot believe that it is over 30 years ago since I played through this game, annotated by you, in one of the national newspapers (was it The Times?) at my sister's godmother's house.
Nice one, maestro! Thank you for sharing and commenting. I played John VdW in a simultane as a teenager in the 80s. That epoch releases a lot of memories. Do you think there could still be footage around somewhere of the Kasparov moment?
Hey Gary, this is how you do it! 🤣 Great to see some of your games Daniel, very useful for (and entertaining) for us club-level players. Have a great Christmas.
Bravo Mr King - another gem ! It therefore gives me great pleasure to invite you to audition for the lead role for episode 7 of the Middle Earth franchise - 'Gandalf the Younger'. The story traces the adventures of the young, glabrous Gandalf brandishing his chess wizardry across the land on his quest to vanquish the brooding chess genius behind the black drapes. This tale of danger, redemption and triumph is the backstory of the legendary Gandalf we all know and love.

Awesome game. If I'd seen the tactic with Qd4, and my opponent had wriggled out to a queen endgame with just a pawn's advantage, I'd have been so disappointed I wouldn't have seen that it was still winning.
This was a very nice tactical game Daniel. Very deep calculation and a lot of guts to put a rook on such a scary square. I know you like to play the Ruy and I know it was 1989 , but I wonder if you ever considered and was prepared to face the Berlin (3. .. Nf6) instead of the traditional 3. .. a6 ? Hard for me to take sides because me was born an raised in Holland but have the British nationality. You know that in 1989 Johns regular job was a butcher !
I think your reference to John as a butcher was just a joke photo that appeared in New In Chess - I don't believe he ever was. But somebody might prove me wrong.
7:14 if Nxc3 Bxc3 Qxc3 Rc1 white gains a strong initiative, which is worth more than a pawn. For example Qxb4 Rc7 Bxf3 Qxf3 bearing down on f7. Or, if instead of Qxb4 black plays Bxf3 then Rxc3 Bxd1 Rxd1 white has the c file and black has to scramble to defend his weak points on f7 and c7. I could easily have missed something.
I love the stories you tell about your games Daniel. I would have voted for you in your poll also! Thanks for the video.
Nice game. Also, the personal insights and comments (like about Kasparov) make it very interesting.
Kasparov couldn't help himself but turn his head. lol

Powerplay to 100k!!!!!!
Love this new series btw!!! Been hoping to see your games for a long time, thanks!
The original and still the best. Thanks Nick!
Compliments!
it is very cool to learn the thought process behind a serious tournament game, especially when it's presented with such class
It's so classy i had a glass of wine while watching
That is the recommended way to enjoy this channel. Bravo!
A series idea: How Daniel King became a GM! ;)
Seconded!
@PowerPlayChess
Yes please :)
oh this is an amazing suggestion! Hope he reads the comment :)
@@lp1926.guitars Yeah :) I'm sure there would be many many interesting games to see which no other chess channel has covered yet.

The Mastergame was fun, I grew up watching it too! But the format is too dated now: we have moved to the online tournaments

I missed the poll, but going through your own games is indeed the best choice. May you make 100 episodes of this.

Wonderful game! The Kasparov story (and other back stories) is the type of content I voted for your own games. Thanks and you are welcome! 🙂
Great stuff. More of this.
Bravo, Daniel! 🍀⭐🌷
Mr. King, your brilliance and humility are inspiring!
How could one possibly remain so modest with such a stunner move? I would put this one in the brilliancy playlist!
Thank you!
Wonderful video
I appreciate your modesty in not wanting to brag about your games but is time to see a little of your successes and failures. I like how you brought to up both your thinking and your emotions during the game.
It fits with the best you've shown so far.
Very nice game!
Getting Kasparov to do a double take on your game is so cool. Great analysis (and great game!).

More of this🏆Fantastic tactics.
Bravo! Fantastic game
Superb attacking game, I love the story behind it. Let's see some more of your games :)
I can see why it's one of your favorites. Well played, and a double take from the Great One himself. Love the game and the story.

Great game. I also like how black made that stale mate position. I would have grabbed that pawn in a blink :)
Nice tactic - Tal would have been proud of that one!
Congratulations, an incredible attacking game. That's the very best chess channel of all. 🙌🙌🙌
Thank you!
Been watching your commentary for literally donkeys years Mr K (and this channel for many years too). Lovely to see some of your own games ❤️
Quite simply the best chess commentary out there. Love the personal anecdotes!

A rewatch for me after UA-cam proposed the video, but still thoroughly enjoyed the second time around! Love the chess and the stories.
Love when you showcase your own games
Brilliant! It really adds a lot having your first hand insight talking about a game of your own for a change.

Great story, Daniel! Well played!
Great game and great move ! How the pieces suddenly jump into tactics mode even a rook down. Marvelous !
Nice game, good analysis
I cannot believe that it is over 30 years ago since I played through this game, annotated by you, in one of the national newspapers (was it The Times?) at my sister's godmother's house.
Was it in The Times? Or perhaps Telegraph? Can't remember.

Great game, nice story about Kasparov also
More GM Daniel King games!!
You the man, Daniel! That was a great strategic game where you controlled the tactics.
Brilliant game, and love hearing the stories behind them! Would be great to hear more about your career and what it was like to be a GM!
Great video, very suspenseful, and excellent game..
A fine win daniel well played
Very nice game with a sacrificial combination to secure victory. It had everything!
Great game Daniel.
Beautiful game!
Great game, thanks for sharing!
Excellent analysis, Daniel. New to the channel, really enjoying it.
Well played GM king loved the game
After that queen move, you should change your name to Daniel Queen!
Gem of a game!
Good job Daniel : to comment is one thing, to play a game is an other !
Thank you!
Fantastic!
Great Game Danny👍👏👏. But, Garry NEVER forgets 😉😉
Impressive game!

The Spanish Bishop comes to life when it gets to the Italian diagonal (from b3) 6:35
I bet John van der Wiel couldn't believe it either when you played Qd4!
Ha, I guess you are right. He just played healthy moves and then he got spanked with Qd4. lol
I would love to see a series featuring the critical games in the three tournaments where you achieved your grandmaster norms.
Such a lovely game and commentary! Are more of your games going to be shown? @PowerPlayChess
He mentioned that this was a series so hopefully yes.

wait... 5:51 why not axb? if Qxb5 then Ba4?
@Oissev Onos lol I thought Rxa8 was winning the rook, but obviously queen is protecting.
I vote for your win as black vs Anand as the next offering.
Here is a suggestion - how about covering some of Alexei Shirov's games. He had some beautiful games.
No wonder you're so blooming good at explaining top players' games. You're not bad yourself!!
9:28 Why can the bishop not take the pawn? The defending knight is pinned.
It's not really pinned. It defends g2 square after taking the bishop, so no mate.
