  • Oriskany Jim sits down to build the 1:72 MH-6 “Little Bird” model from Italeri, with plans to use it as a gaming miniature in an upcoming “Black Hawk Down” wargame set in Mogadishu.
An extremely prolific aircraft, this OH-6 Cayuse, AH-6, MH-6, MD-500 Defender (at least 12 variants in all) has seen service with the militaries and police forces of at least nine nations, as well as widespread civilian use.

The landing skids and rotor blades are a real PITA to fit. Model is an old tooling and I guess that be a reason why they didn't do a better job the standard of a modern kit.

Oof, it was very tough to put that part together and remained very fragile afterwards. That last part is my fault, since i'm using it as a wargaming miniature rather than a "put it on the shelf" display model (as intended).

I built the Nam version of the Loach and took out the doors. No idea why they molded the right side all as one piece unless the first release was a civilian model and at the time had no plans to doing the military version.

Yeah, it seemed a little strange, but I worked with what I had.

I flew on the side of MH-6 little birds in the 90's. Damn near everything was black, (seats, blades, aircraft paint),not the best for modelers. The unit logo and tail number were a dark grey. The instrument panels glowed a dim NVG green. The pilots wore green or desert flight suits and of course the NVG's emitted a NVG green glow toward the pilots eye. I to am building a 20 modern SOCOM board, good luck in your project.

Thanks very much! Yeah, when the whole helo was built and painting was COMPLETED - (actually used it on the table today), it was basically black. More of a matte black, instead of a shiny jet black.

@@JamesJohnson-wq6bs Keep what you got and build the next AH/MH with the fixes. Unless your PLASMO of course, that guy is a model modifying machine, good luck with the game.

Cockpit and passenger doors off. That IFF antenna was a wire strike protection system (WSPS).

Cool. So quick question, are there doors only on the port side? Because the model kit didn't include doors for the starboard side, it just had one flush piece for that whole side of the fuselage.

@@JamesJohnson-wq6bs All four doors were off for the MH-6 and AH-6. You many have to do a little cutting. Next month I'll pick up my own so thanks for the heads up.

@@maxpower3050 - Yeah, the starboard side of the model was completely one piece except for the windows. No opportunity for doors there without carving up the model kit.

I have built the Italeri Vietnam Version for Charlie Company. Its not great for gaming. The landing skids and the blades will break all the time. I am just going to end up making it a crashed objective. The RAFM Charlie Company Metal one is just as bad. The skids are lead alloy and bend all over the place.
I also tried the SHQ and Britannia pilots, but the fit is too tight to get them in the little bird. They are fine for bigger helicopters. I think RAFM had a pilot and a M60 gunner, but again, would not fit.

Okay, cool. At least now I know I'm not the only one. This MH-6 Little Bird is a great MODEL kit, but man is it fragile. Broke three times during painting, and again while we were getting to the gaming table. Now it sits on my flight stand, nice and safe ... no one touches it ... 😅

Youll find the missing piece the day after you give away the mini.

Leave the doors off for combat operations. The only time you use doors is for cross country flights or accountability.

Damn, I wish I had known that. Because the portside door of the aircraft was a real pain in the ass. I would have gladly skipped that part. The starboard side wasn't a choice, the whole side of the fuselage was a single piece. Thanks for the tip, though!

Could it have been different for Desert Storm? I saw on the OH-58, they kept the doors on. Maybe to keep the sand out?

It's not a proper hobby session without a sacrifice to the Carpet Monster. You're lucky it didn't come looking for a blood sacrifice or your hobby knife would have bitten you.

Hell, we have hardwood floors and I still couldn't find it! 😡 It bounced into my girlfriend's side of the hobby room (jewelry and beading) and I swear that pit is a portal to the 40K Warp ... Once something falls in there, it's lost forever.
