This makes the second time Buffy has had to claw her way out of a coffin. If you remember in season 1, it’s revealed Buffy’s biggest nightmare and fear is being buried alive. She literally “woke up” in her worst nightmare. Poor girl.
@@Buffy8Fan well knowing what Buffy tells Spike later in the season yes you can say depressed, But watching it for the first time and not knowing what's going to happen next , The look Buffy has to me just screams confused.
On Angel season 2, it was confirmed that their Earth is indeed a lesser hell dimension. Which probably explains in-universe why monsters are such an active presence. So yes. It’s a hell.
Yes, Buffy had to fight through her coffin and crawl out of her own grave- kind of like… a vampire. No, she’s not actually a vampire but the parallels are there. I think when Anya warned the biker demons that Buffy might eat their brains, she was implying Buffy might have come back as a zombie.
Bargaining, anger(probably), denial, acceptance. I'm pretty sure bargaining isn't usually the first one. after looking it up - Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, Acceptance. So I guess we're in for a lot of depression from now on in S6? That tracks.
This season was a rebirth of the series on a new network. One with far less problems with more adult themes. Now, no spoilers, but I'll be interested at the end of this season in your take on the overall tone and themes of this season.
This is something I love about your reactions Cass - you really get the emotional side of things I think you’ll appreciate s6 pretty well - not everyone does 🙂
Xanders reaction implied that they all assumed that she would just magically appear in front of them if they brought her back. They failed to put together that she would revive but be put back in her coffin. They should have dug her grave and took the body out. Also back in season 1, one of Buffy's biggest fears is being buried alive. Also warning, season 6 is more dark and depressing than the other seasons.
“I wonder how long someone could last in a coffin?” Well, if it was a coffin that a body had been decomposing in for half a year, probably not very long. In a fresh casket you would have about five hours of breathable air, but you would almost certainly pass out sooner than that due to carbon dioxide levels increasing.
They *did* sacrifice someone to bring back Buffy: they sacrificed the BuffyBot. And frankly, it always kind of annoyed me how the *others* in the group treated BB. Spike and Dawn, I feel, treated her like a person. They even mourned her when she died. I think that's a very human reaction to what happened, regardless of whom she resembled.
Yeah, I never liked that either. We're meant to feel sorry for April, but not BuffyBot who was actually starting to ask questions about her own existence?
It's been very risky to use that resurrection spell. What if she only came back as a "normal" human being? Since Faith owns the Slayer-Line it wouldn't make much of a sense to bring her back as a Slayer. So she wouldn't even been able to free herself out of her grave and probably died of suffocation - without the scoobies even knowing ☹️
Remember when Angel was trapped in a hell dimension for a hundred years because time flows differently there? That's the closest approximation we seem to have for whaever thappened to Buffy so it's bound to take her a while.
DEFCON is a system of levels of readiness of US military forces. DEFCON 5 means everything is at peace. DEFCON 1 means ongoing nuclear war. NORAD is a combined US and Canada air defense center; in case of a nuclear war it's gonna be one of the busiest places.
I kind of love your "life for a life / what if this kills Dawn" theory. Glad the episode didn't actually go that way, of course, but that would be an extremely Whedon sucker punch to throw. Make you think the Hail Mary worked, and everything's okay, and then pull the rug out in an unexpected (by most people) way that makes sense in retrospect.
We'll never know if they could have found another Urn of Osiris, had their efforts to revive Buffy not worked. But remember, Anya found the only remaining 'known' Urn. I consider that a small loophole had the writers wanted to use it.
Poor Buffybot got got. But we got Buffy abck so YAY! It's so surreal this is the second time Buffy has had to dig herself out of her grave, which was one of her biggest fears!!!
A two-part question: How did they get a hold of a coffin, since her death was to be a secret, and how did they get a gravestone? The gravestone especially troubles me. Unless it was pre-ordered somehow, it would take quite a while to get one made.
My guess is that in Sunnydale, along with a lot of churches and cemeteries, there are also a lot of headstone carvers. Like, as many as there need to be... 😂
In all my re-watches it's only just occurred to me that they just used the same shot of the ground from the tower over and over because each time you see Dawn walking along on the left 🤦♂️
Ep 3 this weekend, Cass? No rush, I'm just looking forward to your reaction to the Buffy-Spike reunion and the end reveal (I know you've watched theough ep 4 by now).
I always wondered why they didn’t dig up her casket first. If they didn’t leave, how would they have known if the spell worked. How would they have gotten her out without digging her up?
This season is definitely the darkest yet, this is probably my favourite season, they touch on many heavy real life subjects, all the characters are fully fleshed out this series, it feels very adult now
I'd like to think that in that moment where Buffybot was questioning where Buffy went after she died, it sparked enlightenment and she suddenly became sentient and so her robot soul was taken up to heaven.
Now they have decided to resurrect Buffy as they just could not bear it without her, but we know this will not be straight forward and have lasting repercussions. When Buffy does emerge she is of course totally disorientated and confused. Even though the Bot is torn to pieces it is still so traumatic for Dawn to see this. A great final scene back at The Tower with Dawn, there is of course a reason Buffy says 'is this hell'. Sets up a great, and very dark Season with some brilliant but disturbing episodes.
The first time that Buffy died, she didn't stay dead for very long, so it makes sense that this experience would feel like Hell to her. The first time, she wouldn't have had the time to have any afterlife experience.
I think they expected her to just "appear" somehow. It wasn't selfishness, it was stupidity. If they'd bothered to check *how* Buffy would come back to life, then they'd have known to dig her up first. Hell, they could have taken her body back to one of their homes and woken her up in a bed.
I don't agree with anything willow does or says in this 2 parter. I'll leave the rest of my thoughts for a later episode because I don't want to spoil. I'll just say I'm not on willow's at the start of the season
It wasn't exactly unreasonable for Willow to assume Buffy was trapped in a "hell dimension". It happened to Angel, after all, and Glory was specifically trying to open a portal to her own hell dimension. And all those creatures that showed up during the opening definitely looked hellish. I could believe that's where she thought Buffy was, and therefore that she needed to be rescued. It wouldn't even be the first time Buffy went to a hell dimension herself (though I'm not sure she told the others about that).
@@PaperbackWizardAngel was physically sent through a portal, his body wasn't left behind. That Buffy's spirit/soul was in a hell dimension was a reach, but it makes sense that Willow would want any kind of justification for doing what she did.
Seems like it’d be easier to simply communicate with the deceased and ask how they are than it is to pull them through different dimensions and reanimate a dead body as well as restore it to health. Willow was initially my favourite character. She’s become a terrible person.

I don't know if Buffy climbing out of her grave would realistically have been possible. Once the coffin broke open, dirt would immediately start coming in, and that's tons of dirt between the coffin and the ground. Fortunately, we get to suspend belief, and accept that she was able to climb out.
It is. Magicians have done it many times, Houdini most famously, but not just him. I suspect the most difficult part would be breaking the coffin, since the lid is protected by all the earth on the other side. Which is why the same Houdini was buried without a coffin at all, just standing on all fours.
@migmit The trick was actually shown one time on an episode of Magic Secrets Revealed several years ago. Tricks would be shown as the audience would see them, and then shown again, but with the actual mechanics of the tricks. The purpose of the show was to revive people's interest in magic.
Certainly a regular person wouldn’t be able to do this in time, but a Slayer may be able to. Though thinking further, since Buffy wasn’t actually declared legally dead and buried in an actual cemetery/graveyard, one would have to assume that the Scoobies dug the hole, so it probably wasn’t regulation depth.
The writers didn't just dress the Buffybot in the same clothes that Buffy was wearing when she defeated Glory. That Buffy is no more, she was torn to pieces. She was not bad, not without flaws, of course, like any person in her position, but Buffy was liked by many. But already in the prologue of the sixth season, it clearly signals to us that Buffy, who defeated the goddess, died. Now there is another Buffy. Worse, better - a controversial issue. In retrospect, what's left of the series is ultimately better, at least for me.
