I think one of the great problems Liz Truss and the Tories in general have is they actually are totally unaware of their own inadequacies. That's why they keep doing silly things with zero shred of self awareness.
There is a root cause for the outcome. The person didn’t fail… the system did. That’s what needs be fixed… not very very funny in light of circumstances in Britain. Most political systems suffer from the same problem.

Was the question ‘what will you do when you’re prime minister ?’ never asked before Truss came into power? It seems incredible that her messing up the budget it was such a surprise, even to her own colleagues.
When Liz Truss was asked during her selection process how she would engage with Nicola Sturgeon, then Scotland's First Minister, she said she would 'ignore her'! If she ever had any political skills she kept them well hidden.
Perhaps the energy inequality will be a factor for the next 25 or 35 years but eventually all of that will run out. The population in the United States will continue to grow and the use of its energy resources will eventually peter out as the oil is finally all used up. It may be better in the long run to have to figure out how to run your country without oil and be forced to make the adjustments for a sustainable economy.
A coalition that enters an election campaign, sometimes winning sometimes losing, is characteristic of first past the post. Unlike a typical election result using proportional representation, where no party is in complete control and negotiations to form a coalition government occur at the stage after the election. From the voter's perspective, her party might end up in an incongruous partnership that her crystal ball didn't pick up.
A straw woman and utter hypocrite. Shoving her previous Lib Dem and Brexit credentials under her bed (horrible image), and becoming a soi disant 'true Conservative'. Any decent person would fuck off UNDER the nearest rock, but not our Liz - she's ON TOP of the nearest rock, i.e. CPAC.

Don't agree with much of this. Burke represented a rotten borough. He had an aristocratic sponsor and wasn't interested in the views of ordinary voters. Most MPs these days are clueless middle managers and out of their depth. The MSM isn't much better. Truss was trying to adopt Reagan's economic policies. Truss, Reagan, and Thatcher were fans of Hayek. Reagan achieved average economic growth between 1983 and 1989 of 4.4%, by cutting taxes, increasing borrowing, and government spending. He also cured inflation and unemployment. The top tax rate fell from 70% to 28%. Truss wanted to adopt his growth policies. Economically illiterate commentators in The Times claimed what Truss was doing had never been tried before. The US is still applying Reaganomics. The Tories have returned to the Butskellism of Heath and Wilson, and policies that failed in the 1970s: big government and low growth. Rather than follow the US, Cameron adopted EU austerity policies and wrecked the UK economy. The debt-to-GDP ratio went from 50% to 90% under Osborne. The US marches on with stellar growth and the EU has flatlined. The EU is fucked.
This podcast has not aged well. She may not have had the character/communication needed of a PM, nor the composure needed to deliver change at an agreeable rate, but her policies made a lot more sense than those of our current Trotskyist mob. It was a clear hit job by the establishment. Dominic showed his usually balanced hand in this episode. Shame as it will influence how I view their take on future topics they cover.
@@fastpublish So the UK should just prostitute itself to Russia because Putin's moral compass is balanced, next to strategic reality? That makes about as much sense as screen doors on a submarine.
Talking about long term trends and future of Europe purely in economic terms and in energy costs is nonsensical without mentioning the elephant in the room - demographic replacement by the Middle East, Asia and Africa.
This is a great podcast. Often very amusing, informative and stimulating but sometimes even Tom and Dominic get it slightly wrong. While l agree that Liz Truss was too much ambition and not enough sense, she did handle the Queen's funeral and her own exit with commendable dignity (unlike Johnson). The Tories used to be the party of law and order and high standards in public life. If they choose Johnson again, that reputation is lost for ever and wipeout at the next election will be fully deserved. Johnson's supporters appear to care only for power at any price. Probity is nowhere (like the U S Republicans).

I think you should just say that America has a problem called Donald Trump and that's a huge catastrophe waiting to happen. For the second time. If you take that away from the American scene the outlook doesn't seem so frightening for the United States. There's inflation of course but besides that the economic indicators have been pretty good for the us over the last few years.
