Being a Gävlebo I have watched this thing burn with my own eyes. It's wonderful, lmao Hey fun fact, there's actually two goats! Since the 80s there's been a smaller one built by students of Vasaskolan. And yes, it has also been burnt/destroyed. So if you fail at burning the big one, you can get some respite by at least burning the baby one.
Seeing you describe it as "the baby one" makes me feel a bit bad about doing it but someone has to do the tradition I guess. (Note: I have never been to Sweden.)
Burning the goat is a wonderful tradition, a breath of freedom erupting in the otherwise rigid and conformist culture. While the goat still burns, the flame has not yet left the soul of man. It's a moral imperative to burn that damn thing at this point.

We have the straw goat tradition in Denmark too, although maybe more rare today. The Christmas goat of straw predates the Christmas tree, and many other types of decorations, it was also something poor farm families could make themselves with straw. The goat symbolises many things, such as the harvest of animals in winter time and for Christmas Dinner being a rare day you eat meat. It might go all the way back to pagan traditions of yule, with Thor and his 2 goats being famous in the mythology and how they could be slaughtered for meat without being killed, as long as you didn't break the bones, then they would ressurect the day after.
I might be mistaken, but according to my brief google search the reasoning behind the arson on the Swedish goat is because the pagans thought the Christians were unknowingly erecting, like, some sorta effigy, so they burned it to ensure a new year with plenty of sun and harvests?
