- I’m back with another one y’all, these are surprisingly pretty fun to make. It’s probably going to be a while before I start working on another compilation, it’ll probably be for either Arasha or Jackie.

i think one of the main reasons Shayne is considered the backbone is that you can pair him with any cast member and you'll get a ton of comedic chemistry, he knows exactly how to play off of each member individually and it always makes for funny content
It makes sense because in the Shayne guesses series you can see how much Shayne listens to everyone and he's really friends with almost everyone.
I fully agree! He’s already really funny on his own but he knows exactly how to escalate someone else’s bit or even revive a bit that fell flat. You can just tell that he’s taken special care to build relationships with all of his coworkers and it really shines through :) I think he has a great understanding that the funniest jokes are ones made in good company

@@byroncook698definitely helps him I'm sure but i know other people who have psych degrees and aren't nearly as skilled as bouncing off other people. I think it's mostly that he's very empathetic, he can read others and see exactly what they want and what they're trying to and he can build them up instead of doing his own thing. Definitely a strong power to have in comedy.
Is there anyone else in the cast that has an established dynamic with every other member of the cast like that?
I think it's fair to say that at this point, Shayne and Courtney are as emblematic of Smosh as Ian and Anthony are.
I mean if they ever take a step back. It HAS to go to Shayne and Courtney at least for onscreen. I can't imagine anyone else.

Shayne receiving a compliment and then right away giving the crew their flowers too, it shows that he truly cares about the people he works with. Also my fav Shayne moment is when he was helping Oliva with her fear of butterflies.
I really appreciate how well-read Shayne is. Like, he’s definitely been to college, but never stopped learning about both the world and his personal interests. On top of that, his charisma, humor, humility, and respect are top notch. If only he was tall too…

I mean, Backbone is actually an apt description, especially as Keith, Angela, and Shayne defines it.
He's good on his own, but with others he really is amazing, he is holding them all up, giving them an admirable posture. Like any well-defined spine does.

Shayne giving Kiana and the behind the camera crew their flowers is awesome, he’s definitely a major part of Smosh’s success but it’s really cool that he acknowledges everyone
I mean no disrespect to any other cast or crew members but after losing interest in Smosh for the better part of a decade of my life, it was Shayne and his bits on TNTL that got me to check the channel out again and it's honestly him more than anyone, even Ian and Anthony, that I look forward to seeing in new videos. Again though, no disrespect to anyone else, I think everyone has their own strengths and are funny in their own ways, I just feel personally like Shayne is the best part of modern Smosh and I could easily see him becoming the new face of the company someday post-Ian and Anthony
I didn't care to watch any Smosh until I saw a short of the "smosh at 99% power" who meme'd it episode. I watched some Shayne compilations and became hooked
100% in agreeance. I was iffy coming back & seeing all the new Smosh members & letting go of my past biasedness but Shayne is def my biggest reason for sticking around & I learned to love new smosh. Ian, Anthony, Shayne, etc

It was so wild to me that Shane was like "I don't think I'm the backbone, I just [describes being a backbone]." They both talk about holding things together and connecting things, which is WHAT THE BACKBONE DOES.

Shayne is definitely the backbone. I know he doesn’t care about it but that man works hard to be funny, and he doesn’t even need to because he’s just naturally funny. It’s easier to find people with similar skills that can produce the shows and do the behind the scene work, but the raw comedic talent that Shayne brings cannot be found so easily. Smosh has been around for so long and no cast member has not come close to Shayne’s talent. Not to say that the rest of the cast aren’t funny, because they’re hilarious and very talented, but you can always see their limitations. Whereas Shayne, that dude was born to make people laugh.
I really hope Ian and Anthony know how vital shanye is to smosh at this point. If that man leaves I really think that shit will collapse

3:00 the way Angela and Keith are describing him is a servant leader. He may not be actually in charge, but he has charisma, sees people’s strengths, and works with that to make them shine. And as Keith said, he kinda steps into a leadership role frequently, and he does a great freaking job
Shayne is the one who brings out the chemistry with others in an approachable and unique way; effortlessly leading an episode or adding to it in a way no one else thinks to. Shayne’s born to entertain; his humility and intelligence contributes to his universally likable persona.
I literally just thought about the McDonald’s organizer earlier today. I think my exact thought was “why is that moment not in more compilations?”

Shayne is the backbone but the rest of the cast are the rest of the skeleton he holds together! Ian & Anthony are the skull, Courtney is the collarbone, Keith and Noah are the arms, etc.

Shayne blows me away with how much he remembers about so many different people. It’s why he can work so well with everyone.
This is hands down one of my favourite things about Keith. He knows his worth, and so he's never afraid to shine a light on other people. ❤️
He's kinda been the main guy to me for years now, Ian will always have the legacy but he's taken a step back in recent years, Anthony is back but I feel like we barely ever see him in videos. Shayne is in A LOT of stuff, helps elevate multiple shows and has been a fan favorite for years. He's humble, everyone obviously contributes to Smosh (wouldnt be around if it were a one man show) but in my eyes he'll always be THE backbone
Its not just that Shayne is so funny, its that he also gets so much humour out of everything and what the others do, like he enjoys doing smosh so much and its infectious to everyone, cast crew and viewers
Shayne is the first born child of Ian and Anthony and had to keep it together when Smosh divorced so the other children won't be worried.

Shayne very much knows he’s the backbone but cannot and will never admit it because as soon as he says he’s the backbone, he isn’t anymore.
I mean that's not really true. He would still be him lol, it wouldn't undo his collaborative efforts with everyone.
He's just a modest guy, and that's sorta a huge compliment so yeah of course he's not going to just be like "yeah I'm honestly pretty great" unless he said so in a sarcastic voice.

The backbone is literally the support. Shayne is considered the backbone because he supports and connects the cast.

While I love everyone now, crew included; Shayne is the one who got me into Smosh because I found him hilarious. His sense of humor is very Chris Farley (one of my personal favs) for me. He also plays off others very well. He and Angela might be one of my favorite pairings. But what I'm getting from this is that Damien loves Shayne (and of course Shayne loves Damien), which isn't much of a surprise but very cute to see.
I absolutely understand Shayne’s stance that the people behind the scenes are the real backbone, but there’s still something to be said about being able to bounce off whatever energy other cast members throw at him. The ability to roll with whatever bit anyone else has on a channel with a lot of improv or off-the-cuff jokes/commentary makes him the broth of the Smosh soup.
You can add a lot of things to the soup, some Keith, some Olivia, a little Angela if you’re feeling crazy, and someone else is definitely cooking the soup and prepping ingredients, but without a solid broth that goes well with anything? The soup just isn’t as good. Shayne is that broth.
The people behind the scenes aren't the backbone at all tbh.
Smosh IS the cast members. The cast members are all very modest people so of course they're going to say the crew are the most important people for Smosh.
The crew members are probably extremely capable people, and work hard to make sure everything runs smoothly... but like there are a lot of really great people that could do those jobs too (with proper training)
You can't replace a single cast member without the audience taking notice. That changes the chemistry of the rest of the cast members too.
@@Tyler-z8r I see your points about the cast being important for what the audience sees, but I think about Try Not to Laugh and how awkward/unfunny some of those bits would be for us at home without the editing that goes into them.
A good example was in an RT life video back before they shut down. And it just wasn't nearly as funny, even by people who had done hilarious improv before. And I think part of that comes down to the behind the scenes work.

I like the way you redefined backbone near the beginning of the video. What could have been a somewhat toxic video turned into one showcasing someones strengths.
For some reason Chanse not knowing what to make Shayne say at 15:42 reminds me of when he tried to do the Dune scream and failed lol.
I truly believe that every person (or in this case we’ll just say every actor) at smosh plays a vital roll and Shayne being the “Backbone” fits perfectly. I don’t think I can do a full run down and dissect every person individually to show their role at the moment but they all contribute something to smosh and have their purpose. Shayne just so happens to be the backbone because he has chemistry with every single person. He is just very charismatic. I honestly really want to hear other people’s opinions on what the other cast members would be. Like who would be the heart of the group, the brain etc, if anybody has their opinions please share!

To counter i think that the members including the crew are also the backbones of smosh. Think about it, there isnt one backbone is there are many. Shayne being the backbone and as funny as he is, is because he plays to the crew and other on screen members. I think the reason we say so is because of the chemistry he has with others and how much we enjoy seeing that in videos. Shayne is great already on his own but he is greatER with everyone else he shares the screen with (in front of or behind the camera).

people get mixed up, shayne being the backbone doesn't mean he's necessarily the funniest or best actor that's subjective (personally i'd say tommy's the funniest and angela's the best overall performer) but he does most things well and he knows how to play off the rest of the cast to a level no one else can
