Wish or if only plus simple past

When we express our wishes, we are generally not satisfied with things in our life or with the way our life is going anyway. That is why we wish if things were different in the past or we hope for changes in the future. We usually use the verb to wish or the expression “if only” to express wishes, regrets and hopes.
