  • In this video I discuss how a fake story about a smart toothbrush botnet used for DDoS attacks against a Swiss company went viral. The story is not real but the concept of a botnet made up of hijacked smart personal hygiene devices is becoming closer to reality each day as IoT becomes devices more common.

You'd be surprised how many people can't do basic life tasks correctly. You know like brushing their teeth properly, eating the right amount/type of food.
A lot of this "smart" stuff is a gimmick but there is actual evidence to suggest that stuff like fitness monitoring works and I guess it works really well for basic life tasks that you do everyday automatically and don't even notice how bad you have gotten at them.
But there is no reason for that to connected to the internet. Having an app should only be needed when there isn't space to show the information on the device. For a tooth brush all you need is a vibration motor to signal "too hard", "too fast", "keep going" etc.

Working in IT makes me want less IOT devices but my smart toothbrush (quip) has helped me since I always had trouble keeping up with the amount of time I brushed for. Might be undiagnosed adhd or something but the really the main reason I like it. haha

Since most people I have asked if they heard about this usually start by saying they were not even aware that smart tooth brushes were a thing, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say my best theory here is:
1] this has been a massive marketing hoax
2] people didnt know these existed, so a push was made to make a lot of noise
3] now idiots will be flocking to the stores to buy these
    aaaaaannnd the sure thing:
4] it is a joke, for now
I have been trying to get more people looking into these kinds of devices though so in a way it is kind of a good thing that awareness has been so heavily planted onto IoT.
    oh and:
5] the number one way these can be used in an effective offensive/recon operation, is echo-location as a means to gain a tactical advantage in unfamiliar territory
5.5] think about the items you bring when you travel. a toothbrush is one of those. people even bring them to work sometimes.
6] only a nation-state group would find that useful...

Okay so hear me out, sonicare 4100 literally has no Bluetooth or internet capabilities. The reason electric toothbrushes are usually better is 1 they have an electric timer you probably aren’t brushing for the full duration 2 pressure monitor because you can be brushing too hard 3 it makes something extremely important like having clean teeth easier. I’m all for less technology but this is a time I’m like you literally didn’t read why people use something and say da hecking technology bad

I bought one of those toothbrushes! I was more interested in the travel case with integrated charger since I traveled a lot at that point, and pressure monitoring system with light feedback, none of the others came with the extras, it turned out it also had RGB! Meaningless but fun. Never used the Bluetooth except to set the lighting color a few times, this was my first electric toothbrush and it helped me get the usage right, it only took a few months.
Oh and guess what? I can eat whatever I want because my toothbrush was built in Germany and delivers an industrial grade cleaning experience. It even works when I'm borderline unconscious!
Change my ways? Nah, ill let my substantial disposable income do that for me thanks.
