- At Knotfest Finland 2022, Nightwish was the headliner band of Friday evening. Rauta was lucky to get these fine gentlemen - Tuomas Holopainen (composing, keyboards etc.) and Kai Hahto (drums) - to talk about the music, shows and even Darkwoods My Betrothed a little bit. Tune in for some talk!

Holopainen is my favorite song writer of all time, that man is a genius & I love hearing what he has to say about how he broke into the black metal genre. “Breakfast-Lunch-Supper!” 🤣🤣🤣

First, I want to thank you guys for speaking English. I know the feeling of conversing in what is not your native language. It was good to learn a little about Kai, and to hear him speak this much was a pleasure. As for Tuomas, he---along with Floor---is on my very short list of all-time favorite artists/famous people. I always get the sense that he does not enjoy interviews, but he does them anyway. Hey, that's show business. If I'm right, this is a PITA for him, but he handles it well. And he does many interviews in English. Lucky for me. I enjoyed the video.😀

Actually the "invisible force" that Tuomas mentions in the 11:26 minutes is his beautiful mind, which is capable of creating an unbelievable, unique and moving kind of music. One day he will surely be recognized as the greatest songwriter and composer of our time. And his humility makes him even more special.

I somewhere read that some music teachers teach about him in music classes amongst the greatest composers of all time and it actually made me so emotional and super proud not only of him of being the greatest Maestro but also that so many people and especially teachers recognize and acknowledge his mastermind that they teach our children. For me it means that there is still light and hope for the future.

I love the part around 8:12 when Kai talks about recording drums for Darkwoods My Betrothed: his initial "panic" mode and then the confidence that you get only with the years of practice :) His skills are out of this world.
Haha, and of course everybody is going to be commenting on the gastronomical analogy of the interviewer, so I have to get my 2cts in double quick here. That gorgeous moment at 6:55 reminded me of that other one with Tuomas side-eying Floor when they were asked if they ever listened to Swedish rockbands 😂
Tuomas' dry sense of humor again cracked me up bigtime. Kudos to Kai for keeping it together, bcz this would have had me rolling all over the floor! These guys seem like great company, sober or drunk. Saw Kai at Pinkpop among the audience, beer in hand. Super relaxed guy.
And for sure, these interviews are part of their routine which may be visible every now & then in Tuomas' trademark stare into the distance. That's why these routine-breaking moments are so hilarious and also so damn precious. So ty Jerry, for that "different meals" gem & Cheers from Amsterdam! 🤘

Of all interviews this is one I never thought appear and yet one of those I wanted the most! Thank you, Jerry, for making this happen. Great stuff that should have honestly have continued for 40 minutes extra just picking Tuomases brain!
Thanks and glad you enjoyed it! I would have gladly done a longer one but we were quite strictly limited this to about 20 minutes. Maybe some day we can do a longer one and dig deeper.

Great interview! I like this one the best of the past interviews with them. Good questions and nice setting next to each other on the couch haha.
Kai and Tuomas are two great musicians and I can identify very well with Tuomas' ideas. The part about egos also makes me liking them. Unfortunately, Floor seems to be getting carried away with her solo attention and social media lately..

Not a fan of nightwish really to be fair, but so glad darkwoods came back and even happier that there’s probably more music to come! Great review jerry, I feel like you are probably one of the top of the game metal interviewers because you genuinely enjoy metal and know your stuff and seem to be getting opportunities now with bigger artists. Congrats mate!
