    For anyone that watches and reads the comments: A rain kilt can be made for free if you save your old gear and/or cut useful things off before tossing. I used a trash-bag with a drawstring closure and cut the bottom open. That alone would work, but I also had some shockcord and a barrel lock, so I made mine a little more durable and easier to use.

    Bring the cat. It will help with mice in the shelters. Joby makes a micro tripod that stays on the camera and folds up flat. $20 on the zon. A third of an ounce. You have a positive attitude and that's the most important thing to carry along.

    Just wanted to comment on your issue with poison ivy. I got poison ivy on my AT hike. Without proper treatment on trail I ended up with a hospital ER visit. Even with two steroid packs I believe the poison ivy progressed to cellulitis. This put me in the hospital on antibiotics for 3 days. The story still did not stop there. I eventually ended up with MRSA and another hospital visit. I did complete my thruhike. The one piece of advice I could give you is if you get any type of illness or injury while on the trail seek the required amount of medical assistance and stay off trail long enough until it is totally under control. Poison ivy is very prevalent on the trail. Take every precaution to avoid it. Good Luck.

    Start with stuff you are comfortable with. You can always change out stuff or ditch something. Don't be afraid to modify your gear: cut off excess strap length or straps you are not using, ditch the top lid (pack brain) if you decide that you can, use as few stuff sacks as possible, use light water bottles as they can save you several ounces. Just modifying stuff in this way can reduce pack weight a surprising amount. 15 to 20 pounds is not too bad, especially early on. Only you can decide what you can give up and be happy without. Most importantly, the hike is about you and not your gear. Have fun planning your hike.

  • @EvansBackpackingVideos

    Really informative (and clever), the way you set up this video by showing the contents of your pack first and the shakedown second. Seems like you've already made a lot of good decisions about your gear. (But if you're planning on making videos on the trail, keep the tripod!) Really enjoyed the video ...

    I do quite a bit of light weight weekend camping and I have a general illumination light for my tent. It usually only gets used when I am changing clothes and getting out for a bathroom break (it is easier to find your tent when it is glowing). When writing or reading in my tent I almost always use my headlamp. So, leaving the Lucy light behind is probably a good idea.
    As for the compass, being an old Boy Scout, it is one of the ten essentials. It is for a reason. I never go out without my compass. That said, if you get lost you are more likely to be found if you simply sit still and "hug a tree". Only in extreme circumstances would I ever suggest anyone try to get "unlost" themselves. Most people simply do not have the training and experience to do it.
    Good luck on your hike. Hopefully I will be able to follow along.

    With regard to the compass, most smart phones have a compass feature (as well as a flashlight). If you use the Guthook App (I highly recommend it), it will keep you oriented to the trail so you don't have to take paper maps (and it works while in airplane mode). I tried the 5000 mha solar just like the one you have and it didn't work. I upgraded it to the 13,000 mha solar version and it worked ok in 2016. For 2017 I went with a 20,000 mph Ankar and loved it. Could have gotten by with a lighter version, say somewhere in the 15,000 mha range. In 2016 I left Springer in early March and never needed rain pants. In 2017 I left NOBO from Luray VA on 2 April and never needed rain pants. For me a 30 degree quilt and sleeping cloths were enough to stay warm, but I am a warm sleeper. Don't worry about bug spray until May, but the bug net might come in handy with the gnats almost right away. Good luck, so excited for you. I will resume my hike in up state NY in Apr or May and continue NOBO.

    • @JoyfulRambler
      @JoyfulRambler  6 років тому

      Thanks, Steve! I switched from the solar charger to and Anker 10000 mha. It weights more, bu charges my phone 2-3 times. And I finally got Guthook, I'm looking forward to trying it on the trail soon.

    • @soaringeagleoutdoors
      @soaringeagleoutdoors 6 років тому +1

      That combo will work great. In 2016 I didn't d. It use guthook. In 2017 I did and it worked great. If you are using an iPhone then keep the charge above 20%. For some reason it takes a lot of power to recharge if it gets below 20%. Also, the iPhone gps work with the phone call n airplane mode so that will help preserve power. Also there is a gps on/off toggle right on the guthook view page so after checking the App you can save more power by turning off the gps. Give the GPS 10-15 seconds to reorient and find satellites after you turn it back on

      Joyful Rambler I used the Anker 10,000 mAh and it was still overkill. I recorded my 2017 AT thru-hike with an iPhone 7 Plus and used it for Guthook, music and podcast. My Anker 10,000 mAh only used 1 bar out of the 4 before recharging in town. I also used it to recharge my headlamp. If I was going to hike the AT again, I would take a 5,000 mAh; it would be quite a weight savings.
      Also, you’ll find out you won’t need a compass. The trail is marked really well, it would be hard to get lost.

    jumping in a little late but, I agree with Evan's Backpacking... If you are going to make video on the trail, you will be well served to keep the tripod... for the sake of both quality and ease. I'm sure I'm speaking for many when I say, I hope you do make videos of your hike. Your persona and concise delivery would make for excellent material. Thank you for this video, it is very well done. Oh yes, one more thing: "the" or "a" mirror, when you've discovered what might be a tick, down around the corner, in the nether regions, will pay for the ounce or two it ways many times over. Just sayin'

    Greetings Joey from up in Canada! I just found your channel as I am in the process of scouting out those in the 2018 class of A.T. thru-hikers. Great video overview. Thanks for posting. You've got some great kit, and you definitely are in the preferred pack weight zone, way to go! May I suggest that you keep a small compass/thermometer. A compass can be used as a help to get you headed off in the right direction after coming off trail in order to get to a shelter, or coming back on trail after going into town, and for getting back to your tent when nature calls in the middle of the night. A thermometer will help determine what the freezing point is - so that you can know when your water filter needs to be protected from freezing. God willing, I'm planning my nobo thru-hike from Amicalola Falls State Park in 2019. I started collecting gear at the start of 2016 and almost have what I believe that I will need ...lol! I wish you the very best as you prepare and look forward to perhaps one of your greatest adventures. Take care! Lamplighter 2019 out! 😉

Im glad you are happy with your Granite Gear pack, I was going to suggest the Z-Packs Ark Haul. I absolutely love that pack! Rain kilts seem to be the way to go also. I don't personally have one yet but definitely plan on getting one. Last but not least I would strongly suggest checking out the Katadyn befree 1 liter water filter, its amazing! I don't hike without it. Anyway best of luck and I look forward to following along on your journey! Joe

    Thanks for sharing Joy. I've seen other Mountain Crossing assessments but this was both well done and informative. Have you considered using the Guthooks app? I think Bigfoot did a great review. I started using it this year on some section hikes. In one case, I lost the trail in the fall under leaves and was able to use the app to discover which direction I needed to go to quickly find the trail. (I was less than 5 ft away). This might save you the wt of compass and maps.

    Mountain Crossings along with all the other outfitters would love to sale you some gear. If unsure about your gear or just learning and your planning a long trail hike look at and mainly at people who have done and completed a long trail hike over the last 3 or 4 years hear on UA-cam. Look at what they started with, mid point and finished with gear list. The big thing to notice about Mountain Crossing is that it is where a large amount (up to 1/3) leave ever year b/c they beat their self (knees mainly) to death on the down hill hike. Take it easy the 1st 4 to 6 weeks for people 40 and older or bad out of shape 6 to 8 weeks. Pack light, buy light gear every thur-hiker even at the end of their hike is still looking to cut another oz or even a gram off their pack weight.

      He kicks out the bivy and then says the sleeping bag may leave you cold on a few nights. Think of it as a system. You can always send the bivy home once the weather improves. In the middle of summer you may be sending the sleeping bag home and start using just the bivy. Lots of opportunities to adjust your gear. After some time on the trail you'll have a better idea what you can live without. If you haven't read it yet I recommend the book backpacking light by Ryan Jordan.
