July Morning

What is July?
There are a great many music festivals in the world, some have a long history, while others were one-time events, but at the same time they left an indelible mark on the culture, both musically and in a broader social sense. The most striking example of the latter is the famous Woodstock. But as a rule, these festivals were strictly tied to the place of their providence. But out of this huge number of musical events of different genres and trends, one stands out, with a rather strange history. Moreover, it (or rather they, since we are talking about a whole scattering of parties) is tied not so much to a place, but to a time, or rather to one specific calendar date, the nights from June 30 to July 1. We are talking about a famous one in Bulgaria (and already gaining fame outside the country) “Julay”, a musical tradition of meeting the first morning of July on the numerous beaches of the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria.
The history of the festival dates back to the late 70s, when, within the hippie counterculture, the tradition of meeting the first July morning on the Black Sea beaches of Bulgaria arose. Young boys and girls with identical long hair came to the seashore the night before, set up tents, lit fires, sang songs with a guitar, wine flowed like a river, the cries of seagulls mixed with the sound of the surf, the squeals of the waves rushing into the night and the moans of love ecstasy. The apotheosis of this unbridled fun was the collective performance of the hit of the cult hard rock group of the 70s, Uriah Hip, July Morning.
The seventies and eighties died down, many generations became adults, of whom they were conceived in these tents on the shore, communist regimes in Eastern Europe sank into oblivion, but the tradition of the Julays (namely, the meetings of the first July morning on the shore began to be called) was preserved. Moreover, these annual events received a new breath and a new organizational form in the 2000s, when two former British rockers Ken Hensley and John Lawton, having learned about this tradition, began, together with their Bulgarian fellow musicians, to come to these parties, which have now formed into annual rock festivals on the seashore on the night of June 30 to July 1st. Part of the tradition remained inevitable, bonfires, tents, swimming, but now local authorities and municipalities of coastal cities took on organizational functions, setting up the stage, inviting music stars, and maintaining public order. This was the case this year in Burgas, the regional center of the southeastern coast of Bulgaria. The mayor's office distributed free supplies of firewood to those who wanted it; friendly, tall, broad-shouldered guys in police uniforms kept order, trampling to the beat of rhythmic music. Alcohol was freely sold near the stage, but no drunk or aggressive people were seen. An amazing atmosphere of general fun and unity reigned, just as it usually happens on July.
