The Tie Defender was truly a technological marvel - in previous video I've called it the greatest Tie Fighter varient of all time and the second most powerful Legends Starfighter. Unless you got a Missile Boat handy, you are NOT guaranteed a win vs a T/D. Even 40 years after they came out, they were still highly thought of and used despite being dubbed 'aged'. I think the last use of them shown in the EU was when Jagged Fel, Tahiri Veila and Ashik (Fel's bodyguards) took a trio of them to escape in roughly 44 ABY (might have the date wrong)
That's not much of a matchup. The E-Wing may be 5 years newer, going by the original Legends introduction dates, but the TIE Defender is a no expenses spared, state of the art, elite starfighter while E-Wing is a common line starfighter. Glorified X-Wing replacement, basically. And in the end they decided to modernize the iconic X-Wing instead of replacing it.
Well are we talking the T65 X-wing of Luke Skywalker or the T-70 of Poe Dameron...the E-wing wasn't a "modern" X-wing
@@aaronsanborn4291 In legends they upgrades the X Wing series serveral times with the T65A1 to A3 and the slighly more powerful XJ Series that goes up from XJ1 to XJ7 or 8. It was never stated anywhere what the improvements were, just a nebulous "slighly better"

The on.ly thing where the Defender wasnt Top of the Line of all Starfighters (as far as i know there are only two that are able to beat it clearly, a) the Missle gunboat that was specifically designed to beat the Defender and the X83 Twintail which came out more then a hundred years layter...
The E-Wing is a decent starfigher that tried to combine the speed of an A-Wing with the Armamament and defensive capabilities of an X-Wing and landed somewhere in the middle. No real challenger for hte Defender.
And in regards to the T70 from the catastropic new movie series: No idea where that would land, its maybe something like the XJ Wing, slighly bigger and better *shrug* But who gives a fuck about Disney canon.

The tractor beam was on the standard tie defender. It wasn't full powered it was simply used to knock the other fighter of balance
Or use it to latch onto heavier objects to further enhance the TIE Defender's maneuverability. ^_^
I remember reading somewhere that it was used to line the fighter up to the defender so that it can get a clear shot on the enemy star fighter. I’m not fully sure though.

I'm glad everyone's having fun with these things but really, why even ask if anything stands a chance against the TIE Defender because the Defender is magicly a perfect vessel, why is it a perfect vessel because theres no way in hell anyone could have beaten the later levels of the TIE Fighter game in a crappy Intercepter. Just like Fel in an Intercepter alone vs. the whole of Rogue Squadron is magicly able to hold his own, why cause plot.

The Latin alphabet actually did exist in the Star Wars universe. It was just seen as the kind of snooty upper class alphabet, while Aurebesh was the common one.
The Roman Alphabet still existed in the Star Wars Universe, called the High Galactic alphabet. It was introduced to explain previous appearances of English in Star Wars.

Not really a fair fight in a 1v1 seeing as the TIE fighter was a throw away ship (good in numbers not so much in dogfights)
Also seen that match up in Canon (comics.) The Naboo Star Fighter, even when it hadn't been maintained for years and without an astromech fought and beat tie fighters. Tie's are strong when used in superior numbers.

Arkus X Phalanx would butcher it, Ascendancy (At least in Thrawn’s Revenge) is a fleet carrier and could probably butcher it (And should probably get a nerf considering I can easily beat ISD 2s, although the shields will easily drop, but it’s cheaper and takes up less pop than an ISD). The Syndic probably has enough power to take it on and take a beating, and the Peltast would turn it into a space artillery war.
Unfortunately, there aren’t really any stats for a Chiss starships, that I’m aware of. But I like the way you’re thinking! I’d be interested in a video about the Victory I and Victory II going head-to-head, though. It really could go either way, because although the Victory II has more ion cannons and turbolasers, the Victory I has concussing missiles.

I would have to give the lean to the X wing. Yes the ARC-170 is a good ship but it requires a crew of 4 (Pilot, co-pilot, gunner, astromech droid), it is slow, and it is limited to 2 medium cannons.
The X wing is faster, has a little more overall firepower, and is easier to use.
I am going to assume that the ARC-170 has a better information suite as it is called the Aggressive ReConnaissance-170 starfighter, and can probably track the X wing better than the X wing can track it.
Lets not forget the X-wing was based on the ARC 170.
Shields, firepower, speed, maneuverability, would all go to the X wng (in my opinion)
Out of 10 fights I think the ARC 170 will win around 3 matches, against the X wing's 7.
Don't forget that the ARC-170 had those two turrets at the back and has a gunner there operating it, as apposed to the x-wing which has nothing there and a blind spot. Even if it had some idea where the ships behind it were, the ARC was better suited for that because it had a crew member designated for that.
I'd say the X-Wing. Remember, the Headhunter was a contemporary of the ARC-170, and is in all ways outclassed by the X-Wing. The ARC-170 has the firepower, and MAYBE better defensive capabilities, but the X-Wing was a thoroughbred dogfighter built to surpass it's predecessors. In terms as speed and maneuverability, the ARC-170 was seen to be lacking, even in it's day, at least when compared to a dedicated fighter, where as the X-Wing was able to compete on the same field as the best the empire could put out.
I would, however, not mind seeing a concept for a 'modernized' ARC-170-like design built for the Galactic Civil War.

I know I'm late to the party on this one, but you nailed it. The defender is a badass ship, and it's really hard to beat one-on-one. Obviously this video predates the X-Wings 2.0 update, but the difference in firepower, shielding and maneuverability is even more distinct in 2.0. The Defender is easily top tier, and will take out an E-Wing nearly every time. I loved this video because they're my favorite ships in each of my favorite factions.

You did miss one thing. The Imperial schematics at 1:39 clearly show the Defender being powered by 2 AA batteries.

I just want to point out that having an astromech droid doesn't necessarily mean that a craft will have more defensive capabilities - it's sort of like having a built in GPS vs having a stand-alone unit that you can place in a mount on your dashboard. Yes, the astromech can initiate some repairs mid-flight, but the astromech's reach is severely limited.
I agree with your statement that having a astromech doesn’t mean that craft will have more defensive capabilities, however I think that an onboard astromech droid does provide a ship with significant advantage over ships that lack one. For example they can optimize ship functionality in flight, manage shield usage, manage sensors, spot targets, activate damage control systems and procedures, and even take over flight controls in a emergency. In a ship without an Astromech the pilot has to manage all those systems by themselves, in an Astromech equipped fighter however the pilot can completely focus on flying while their droid manages all the important ship functions.
In the Tie Fighter PC game the Tie Defender was a bit of a mash-up craft. It had the firepower of the Y wing, the shields of the X wing and the speed/maneuverability of the A wing. I can't speak for the E wing as that was not included in that game. With the missiles you could have photon torpedos or concussion missiles but not a mixture of both. There was a modular add-on capability which allowed the attachment of items such as a tractor beam emitter but these were not standard issue.

In the X-Wing series, it is said that the Defender can defeat a B-Wing, or at least fight it to a stand-still. The Defender was only ever beaten by Rogue Squadron, and mostly by Wedge.
The E-Wing has a serious problem with overloading laser cannons. THE TIE DEFENDER has three ion engines, one in each wing nacelle. each had a ball mount that allowed the fighter to literally spin in place.
Besides the interesting non trilateral design of the TIE Defender, and even more interesting additional features of the same experimental fighter (a tractor beam on a fighter for instance), the name of this craft stands out quite a bit to me. Imperial ships usually have aggressive, monster, and or fearful names (like the Oppressor, or the Chmera, or the Vector... shout out to Zombie Star Wars, aka Death Troopers), and I'd expect something like "Defender" to be an Old Republic, Rebel, and or New Republic ship.
Good decision, the TIE Defender itself is a really strong model. Practically, it wouldve been even stronger, since the empire would only let their best pilots fly the Defender model due to high production cost ;)

Couldn't agree more. The Tie Defender was truly a marvel of Sienar technology. Imagine if they'd spent all that money from the death stars on useful, quality ships like this. I remember that the Tie Defender was phased out by bureaucracy and politics among the useless imperial officers, one in particular I don't remember the name of but in summary the idiots argued this ship is too expensive to be worth it. Tell that to the quality ships the Rebellion had that won the war, compared to the disposable Tie Fighters.
TIE Defender will always be my favorite Star Wars starfighter. However in the TIE Fighter computer game, when the TIE Defender factories were captured by a rogue Admiral and the Empire was faced with hostile TIE Defenders and no new TIE Defenders Grand Admiral Thrawn had to quickly come up with a counter to the most powerful starfighter in the galaxy and quickly. His solution, the Missile Boat. Cheap, ugly, unsophisticated, quickly constructed, but carried a lot of missiles. Basically it would lock on to a TIE Defender and fire a swarm of missiles at it and eventually some of the missiles would find their mark and bring itdown. Incidentally, the Missile Boat was a superb bomber, as it could carry so many different kinds of munitions and was a real threat to any capital ship. I don't think the Missile Boat is considered canon however.
I always hated the E-Wing. It looks like it came out of Star Trek. I remember when it came out and was being shown in a few pieces of media. It confused me as to what I was watching as a kid. Always hated it and a few others because of the fact.

Jeff Vader Finalizer had somewhere around 1500 Turbolasers, better Tech and shielding than Lucrehulk with 500 or sth Lasers... On top of that the ISDs Shape allows it to focus fire whilst lucrehulk could fire maybe 1/10th of the Finalizer...

I have to agree with the result as well, especially if The TIE Defender had the tractor beam modification. That allows easy target lock to secure kills. It was a marvel of engineering at its time.
The TIE-D and Missle Boat were so OP in the TIE fighter game back in the early 90s. They had to nerf the crap out of the TIE-D for X-Wing Alliance. The Missle Boat was overlooked in later games, though it did get a nerf bat to its loadout capacity.

Actually, I am unsure how to count this for while on paper it is better, but in stories in legend, the TIE Defender as beaten pretty heavily by Rebel pilots, despite TIE Defenders were only piloted by the best of the best. Though if I point a big weakness, it would be the flight suite used by Imperial pilots as it was describe as uncontrotable, and gets in the way since they had to wear suits design to be mini-life support of the TIEs didn't have them until later, which was a noted major design flaw.
Yah... the Tie-Defender is just about the most brokenly OP fighter in the entirety of Star Wars so long as one avoids mention of the Missile Boat. And I love it.
I have always been just a little sad there has yet to be a Rebel/New Republic direct answer to the Defender since fighters are kinda the whole thing for them but maybe the new canon will come up with something in a new X-wing vs Tie Fighter type game.

While you did mention it.. I do think you need to put price into more play.. price for price, you could assume 2 or 3 E-wings versus the cost of a single 'Trip'. Sames goes in a match up for sat X-Wing vs 2 or 3 Tie Fighters... cost should be your fourth rating factor for fighters :-D
I've not seen the Missile Boat yet, I always enjoyed flying it, launching volley after volley of advanced concussion missiles at the enemy.
That matchup is even more unfavorable in Canon where the E-Wing doesn't exist so the TIE Defender wins by default. Or if you prefer, you can look at how the Canon TIE Defenders we saw in Rebels are virtually indestructible by fighter standards, with conventional anti-fighter weapons have no effect on them.
You forgot the fact that TIE Defenders don't come equipped with particle shields, so a proyectiles could easily get through

Well, in the rebels series, the TIE Defender was f****** outclased by a god**** Y-Wing, when you're like: UM... What? That's right people, Y-Wing. I don't know why the pilots hesitate so much, when they should fire, those heavy cannons it has in comparison to the other TIE models.

I've gotta give it to the TIE Defender. Superior speed, maneuverability, and firepower. And although it DOES have a glaring blind-spot, something that I find most starfighters have, its speed and maneuverability in combination with its shielding and armor compensate for that weakness. Having said that, concussion missiles and proton torpedos are still a credible threat to the TIE Defender. However, an easy solution to that is the use of ECM. That does still leave the Defender vulnerable to swarm tactics by massive numbers of enemy fighters, but no starfighter can truly counter that. And though excellent, the TIE Defender is by no means a perfect ship, anyway. That having been said, the E-Wing is definitely the more practical of the two. It's basically an improved X-Wing. Although I must admit, I have no idea why they had to get rid of the extra wings. I'd love to see how my ideal ship would perform. I would spare no expense, and it would be virtually perfect, and totally unbeatable in a one-on-one dogfight. Despite being an excellent starfighter, even the TIE Defender can be vastly improved. For example, add microthrusters like those used by the Starviper to the wings of the Defender. Its already considerable maneuverability just shot through the roof! I can think of ways to improve its weapons loadout, shielding, and armor, as well. Of course, it would be quite expensive, even more so than the base Defender. Enough that it wouldn't even be practical to equip squadrons of elite pilots with such a ship. It would be far more like an elite starfighter used by the absolute best of the best, like Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, and Kylo Ren.
Wouldnt mind seeing the Trade Federation Lucrehulk-class battle vs the Mon Calamari MC80 Liberty class, both have good defensive's, so its fighters vs better weapons.

How about a matchup with the millennium falcon/The Outrider vs. The Ghost/Ebon Hawk.
They were all smuggler ships and are critical to a lot of Star Wars storylines.
The TIE Defender was per standard equipped with a Tractor Beam, albeit not as powerful as those on destroyers etc. It could make a bad day for an A-wing pilot a catastrophe.

I like lines of both ships to agree on only one. I would try an 'ugly' fighter concept by adding the tie interceptor wings on the end ofthe e wings wings and one on top of the main body.

Good call on the TIE-Defender. You could try a match between these two ships using the Star Wars mod for the game X3 if just for the immersion. Though, I'm not sure if they correctly implemented Ion Cannons in that mod...

Would you consider doing fleet based ones as well, since some ships - like the Acclamator, for instance - are meant to operate in support of others? For instance, how would a standard Imperial fleet stand up to the usual standard Republic fleet? Or perhaps an Imperial one versus a Separatist one, since the damned Lucrehulk can carry so many fighters?
I feel like some ships lose out due to operating in different roles, i.e. that Mon Cal ship versus the Acclamator a while back. The Acclamator is a support carrier, while the Mon Cal one is more of an Assault Carrier closer in relation to the Venator or a Star Destroyer in role.
So i feel like the fleet consideration for certain ships would help. And it wouldn't require too crazy a change to the exam format, since all the same things would be evaluated. Just add the addendum that the admirals are also on par and you're set. It also grants the series a bit more longevity for you.

Hey could you do two specific ships the Rouge Shadow vs The Millennium Falcon Including their pilots and crew
In the Star Wars Rebellion board game the Gozanti and Corellian Corvette ships are considered comparable ships.
So I'm curious how those two ships would do against each other.
I'd like they fight with each other rather than against each other.
One on one it's no contest, 99 times of a hundred the Defender wins...but in universe there were probably 100 E-wings and 1000 X wings for every Defender produced meaning it would be rare for a Defender not to face at least a pair or two pair of X or E wing and very often entire squadrons. Recall that the IRL inspiration for most things Imperial were the Nazi wonder weapons of WW2 and to a lesser extent the Japanese. The TIE fighter is pretty clearly based on the Zero being incredibly light and cheap but ending up with radical performance in exchange for falling apart after one solid hit.
Assessing the one on one performance of a German jet or superfighter that was always outnumbered 10 to 1 ignores the realities that dictated the design choices which intentionally or not are carried over pretty consistently into SW. The US Navy faced Zeros with the F4 Wildcat, slower and less maneuverable than Zeros but a lot tougher and tactics evened the score long before planes that completely matched and outclassed the enemy became available.

B-Wing was more of a bomber than a starfighter, and was actually closer in size to a small starship or shuttle. I could see it having more shielding than the much smaller T/D.
I would like to see a diagram that showed fuel capacity and location. It looks like a ball cockpit with wings and a " super " engine. I don't see where it would have space for a large amount of fuel.
How about the Praetor Class-Battlecruiser vs Resurgent Class-Star Destroyer
Although the pilot may have the same skill level, surely the equipment they have to use/wear matters. For example tie fighters have low life support so flight suits are needed.
