  • Why I bought the @Roland #System8 over other poly-synths?
I was in the market for a poly-synth after selling my Roland JP-8000. I look at all the poly-synths available today and finally decided to go for the System-8 from Roland. Why? The sounds, the expansions using Plugout, the sequencer, the Performance mode, the Arpeggiator and more...

The thing I really love about the System 8 is that you can even layer 2 sounds on top of each other without splitting so you basically have 2 System 8's.

I bought my System-8 about a year and a half ago, and it was primarily for the plug outs, because it does them exquisitely well. However... since then I also discover the internal system 8 engine and it is phenomenal! There are multiple oscillator modes including a version of FM, formants, etc., and the filter modes are crazy too. This is a serious noise machine.
Also the knob and slider layout is fantastic. As someone who grew up with a DX7 (and I still have it!) I am DONE with synths that require menu diving.

I bought a Sys-8 a couple of years ago primarily for the plug outs too! Now that Roland came out with the Juno 60 plug out, my hopes have been fulfilled. I had a J60 decades ago, but sold and regretted it from about a week later. When the JU-06a was released, in late summer of ‘19, I hoped Roland would release the ACB model of the 60 as a plug out since. Wasn’t interested in buying the Boutique since it was only 4 voices. At a small synth expo I attended shortly after the JU-06a was released, Roland was there showing off that unit as well as the J-Xm, and a couple other goodies. I asked a Roland rep if they’ll do a plug out of the J60. He said it’s likely but couldn’t really confirm. So I had hoped since then, and here we are. I now have the J8, J60 and P3 on board, and am a happy camper.

@@RaniOsnat Yes. The J60 always sounded more rich or warmer than the 106. I hear it in the plug out too - especially when it comes to the strings. I didn’t hesitate to replace the 106 plug out with it.

Good choice I love my System 8 having the ability to change the plug outs is great. I looked at the Jupiter XM but went with the System 8 for it’s ease of use with knob per function and the way the lights go out depending on which plug out synth you are using is fantastic and no menu diving.

    Salut Nu-Trix!
Fantastic choice! I was hoping you would eventually get a System-8 and review it! :)
Analog Circuit Behavior is awesome. It's like the "Matrix" of analog electronic instruments :)
Like you said, the System-8 is like having 4 perfectly recreated classic analog synths (including their original characters). If I had to keep only one of all my synth (not an easy question!) it would have to be the System-8 - I just love its rich sound and ease of use.
I am really looking forward to your next videos on this fine synthesizer! Your videos are a great inspiration!

I bought my first Roland System-8 today after being skeptical for a long time. I have been playing with it for a few hours and it´s hands on the best sounding VA synth I have ever come across. Roland should strongly keep updating the ACB technology, they have truly blurred the line between analog and digital with the System-8. This is a keeper!!!!

  • @WildernessMusic_GentleSerene

Been agonizing for years whether to invest in the System8. For 10 years I have been using the Gaia SH-01 with great success, but not happy with the higher register sound especially in monophonic play. I am well acquainted with ACB tech from my Boutique collection. Tactile control (knob-per-function) digital synths have been extremely rare before the Gaia and Boutiques. JD800 and JP8000 are about all there are in history. So anytime a tactile digital is released I want it, providing the sound is acceptable; sound designing with a menu is something I rarely do. But with a price way over the $1000 mark, been very hesitant. So, I begin thinking about the option of combining two synths for the price of one System8 like a Prologue combined with a Gaia for example. What do you think of the sound quality of the higher registers in both poly and mono play on the System8?

Hey Nutrix, how does the System-8's ACB differ from the first 3 Boutiques? (JX-03, JP-08, and JU-06). Thinking of selling my units to upgrade to the S8. Also, are the Plug-Out vst's different from the Plug-Outs inside the S8? I'm wondering if I really should get the S8. It's cause I already have the VSTs, to me it be pointless to have the hardware if it sounds the same as the plug-ins, just thinking 🤔

I will do a side by side audio video between the system 8 SH-101 plugout and a SH-01a Boutique to see. The software version should have the same sound has the system 8. I believe the Roland Boutique range uses a 44.1kHz sampling rate, whereas the Aira range (including the System-8) uses 96 kHz.
The SH-101 Plug-out is monophonic whereas the Boutique SH-01A is 4 voice polyphonic. It's a pity the SH-101 Plug-out isn't 8 voice poly on the System-8 or at least 4-voice poly (to be compatible with the System-1/1m too).

A modern classic synth, and one which does DAW integration better than any other (along with the System-1). The flawless way in which you can move sounds between the VSTi/Freeze them, edit and keep going, made this a no brainer choice for me (and a System-1 on top). If Roland can do a JP-XA (adding ACB to that form factor/augmenting the Zencore), I think they'd have the greatest synth of the 21st century

I have a question: When powering up, it either comes up on a predefined patch or performance as set in the system settings, or you can select a patch of performance manually. So I think I have all the stuff you’re mentioning on there? I’m still struggling to see why I would just do all this in software. Other than the hardware interaction that it. Maybe that’s the point? My rule for hardware is that it has to do stuff the software cannot.... It’s not because I’m an analog purist....

i could see your logic here . but there are a few factors. A. the FPA chips native to the system 8 just handle the software code more efficiently. its really snappy and just works like it should. B. The sequencer on the system 8 is fantastic. C. Real time control with knobs and sliders, it just feels like an analog synth as far as the experience goes. D.. every thing else is preference. but for me i cant stand VST's for a ton of different reasons. like one example is every time i want to reformat my computer i have to reinstall tons of different VST's ... and if i try and load up older songs to work on and i didnt install that ONE vst i forgot about the song wont load and i have to track it down and install it and just uuhg. nah. hardware is always there for you with a lick of the power switch.

It has the same ACB technology,
So yes it could replace boutiques. The limits of the System-8 are 8 voices spread over 2 sounds played simultaneously (upper and lower). Still, the boutiques have some unique things like their own sequencers (each working differently)

system 8 and system 1 are true roland successors of vintage roland synth product line, the whole structures looking pretty similar with jupiter and some mini synth(system 1), it plus more osc and filter, effects, lfo types, arp or seq mod knob,
but the truth not, while you playing with it you can found the internal routing could very complex(ok most users never give enough notice to internal of every synth, it could has huge difference even the synth type was same, and system 8 and system 1, sounding completely different), osc color mod, also working with other like pitch, lfo, to make a complex sound you have never heard before,
to make a future sound, the instruction is, try to use 2 osc, then mod it with flter, pitch mod or lfo(omg sub can be the mod), then choose sync mode(sometimes the ring), then tweak the cross mod to hear, the distinct of it sounds,
then when playing, tweaking lfo, cross mod, and sequencer knob,
however it also has flaws, the build like a plastic toy at that price range, the keybed could be piano like, and do some optimization, the vst plugin could be more efficient, I have many original presets but I don't have that synth actually,
hardware only, price, difficult in sound design, and without amount of 3rd party presets, though it very powerful and ahead, but still can't be popular in modern production market,
the massive x, in similar situation, after the powerful synth released many years ago, you can't found it in any popular works, what happened with the world musician?

    • @mc2engineeringprof
      @mc2engineeringprof 3 роки тому +2

@@MediaMusik777 Many people even today would agree that it STILL defines that sound. You can use a Virus hypersaw or the doublesaw across 3 oscillators on the Supernova 2 / Nova or the multisaws with the Korg MS/Radias series, or the Yamaha AN1x/AN200, or the unison saws from Waldorf or Nord or even the newer Roland synths that have supersaws (V-synth, Gaia, 201, SH-32, System-1 & System-8, etc) or any of the hundreds of variants on plugins - and many get close (especially the Roland System-1 and System-8 and SH-32)
…but NONE quite itch the supersaw JP scratch like the original. I don't know if it's the weird aliasing or the phasing you get unpredictability from it... whatever it is, it's unique. Often imitated, never duplicated!

ACB is (to my knowledge) based on circuit simulation modelling programs.
For example SPICE, an open source circuit modelling program was introduced in 1975 (Wikipedia).
Arturia and other companies have different marketing terms for this, but that is what these three initial supposed technologies are, marketing terms.
There is nothing wrong with marketing and I think Roland is making some nice stuff, but I feel they and other legacy synth companies may struggle in the future.
As one person, or small development team can put out a comparable VST at a much lower price (TAL J-8, I'm looking at you, or Arturia if you want something more mainstream (and slightly more expensive).
Legacy synths possibly will become less desirable too over time.
No doubt younger musicians and producers will get misty eyed over old VSTs and there will likely be a market for reissues of today's Plugins ten to twenty years from now.

it just doesnt make sense to me to buy into the roland world in 2022 because youll just end up sounding like a 1990 italian pop musician or even worse, trance. the roland sound is very commercial. the records i was buyinh back then were much more nuanced / nyc house / deep chicago. i know a lot of that sound was based on roland drum machines etc but the synth stuff theyve done mainly appeals to cheap sounding pop dance. its just not credible in 2022.
