My Mom just gave me my Daddy's that he had, it's older than me. But it was so dirty/baked on grime and I had no idea what to do. Thank you so much for showing me how I can save it b/c it is those small things like a simple pot that mean the most.
That’s awesome. So glad that I could help !!
Excellent video, thank you for sharing! I did this and it is amazing. It is important to wear a face mask when spraying it.
Great tip! yep if you don't like fumes, it will get to you a bit
Thanks! you did a very good job restoring that pot. I'm on the verge of throwing mine out because they seem to be "scored" or have excessive scratch marks from so much use. Also I mostly use "cast iron black pots" to cook in & seemingly food unless under constant attendance, will stick to the bottom of a magnolite pot faster than a black iron pot simply because you cant scratch or score up a black iron pot unlike a magnolite pot which scratches easily. No one can answer my question of why a magnalite is more expensive but isn't as hardy as the good old fashioned cast black iron pots. Do you or anyone else have personal opnions?
Well, as for the scoring and the scratch marks from so much use. You can re-polish the inside of the pot or if you need to you can sand it like I did the outside. As for pricing, older cast-iron to me is still worth more than and cost more than magnalite The Griswold Dutch oven is 250 bucks to wear that magna light pot I have bought was $20 at an estate sale. Most magna lights do have a trivet that goes in the bottom of the pot to stop a lot of the sticking mine has it. I forgot to show it in the video it’s been cleaned up. Mines actually cracked. I need to take it to a friend of mine and have them aluminum weld it. Personally, I think they both cook very similar. I’m more of a cast-iron person myself but I like the magna light also for one it’s a lot lighter to cook with it seasons just like a cast-iron pot though the end so I can be season, then left season like cast iron. But if you’re having a ton of issues with yours, I would recommend restoring it or have someone restore it. If you want click on the about page, send me some photos of it by email at. ourTexashomestead@gmail.com
God please don’t throw it out! If you don’t want it I’ll take it! I want one so bad
Beautiful job and thank you.
Glad you like the video !!!we appreciate your time and comments.
@@OurTexasHomestead I've watched it a couple of times since I found your channel and have since done my stovetop expresso pot and it's beautiful. Thanks again.
That’s great! Glad we could help !
I admire you guys who can do this. I'll clean cast iron all day but I won't touch this stuff. I have a raised letter Wagner Lid what is in good shape but could be polished. When I think of getting in all those letters I think shit there's something else that needs doing. If electrolysis doesn't clean it I don't either. I clean for some estate sale companies and I just tell them that I don't do aluminum.
For people who want to fund their collection or possibly buy better pieces contact your local estate sale companies. First off you'll get the first look at what they have. You may trade cast iron for restoration or take the money. If you take money remember these are estate sale companies. They don't get top dollar and you can't either. If you take a lightly rusty skillet that won't sell and restore it they can get $45 or more for it. In doing this I found Asian cast iron sells just like Griswold to cooks so don't overlook it. These are my prices, lid / trivet - $15, skillet, griddle, ashtray, iron #6 and smaller - $10 , skillet, griddle #7 to #10 - $15, skillet, griddle #12 to #14 - $25, gem, corn stick pan - $25, Dutch oven, combo cooker with lid - $30, waffle iron, oval roaster - $35. Like I said I can't get top dollar but in some of the larger loads it adds up. I'm retired and just playing.
Cleaning these is for sure a process.
What kind of sandpaper do you use? And is there more than one kind? Thanks
Any WET sand paper. Just multiple
Grits.
Sorry, super new to this, but does multiple grit mean? Like get progressively fine grit sandpaper? Thank you! Am going to clean up a Magnalite roaster I found at a yard sale for $10! Just in time for the holidays. 🤩
There are many brands of wet sand paper. Here is a cheap one from Amazon grit starts at 120-5000. amzn.to/47496BJ
Wet sanding is a sanding process that uses water or another liquid as lubrication to wash away grit particles
Wet sand paper is water proof basically. Dry sand paper is not and you get build up of material on dry sand paper and not with wet sand papers.
I didn't know that You're Charlie Brown's Dad !!!?
Yep , sure am
Do you sand the inside?
No. I do not at all
What is the blue liquid you poured on before you sanded?
Dawn
The soap will make the wet sand paper move easier. When wet sanding I always use just a little soap to reduce heat and make it easy to do
Watching you scrub without knowing what you are saying is pointless
I was just talking to talk. No real extra info at that time
It would have added 30 more minutes to the video too
I’ve seen several people claiming blue cap oven cleaner doesn’t contain lye but the label clearly says sodium hydroxide. I have a heavily blackened Wagnerware pan that I’m trying to clean with not much progress. I may have to resort to using it.
I have had some heavy blacked ones. Just takes a couple more times to spray it and put it back in the bag. The ingredients are as follows
Water, Dipropylene Glycol Propyl Ether, Isobutane, Potassium Carbonate, Ethanolamine, Smectite Clay, Benzyl Alcohol, Sodium Lauroyl Sarcosinate, Paraffin Wax, Fragrance. Contains fragrance allergens.
The #1 biggest mistake made with cast aluminum is putting it in the dishwasher. Turns everything black and dull, and its hard to get off. My mom took good care of her Magnalite and it looked great for 50 years with constant use.
Yep. Not dishwasher safe for sure. I hope the video helps you get it back to the way your mom had it !
@OurTexasHomestead oh, I would never put Magnalite in the dishwasher. But you see many examples of that abuse on ebay.
@@dededenver9560 I’m sure there are a ton that have been on there.
Awesome video! Does the brillo pad scratch the surface?
@@Foxyncrew-zw3xe yes
Are any Magnalite pieces covered with anything? Or are they all aluminum?
Magnalite cookware is manufactured using aluminum and a unique magnesium alloy
What kind of sandpaper did you use? Your video was going at warp speed so when you were talking prior to sanding I could not understand. I just bought like yours at a thrift store for $7.99 hoping there was a way to clean it, so thank you!
Wet Sand Paper i use 1000, 1500,2000,2500, and 3000 grit
Did I also hear /see you use a little bit of soap with the sandpaper as well? @@OurTexasHomestead
Well I did want one of these roasters but now I’m not so sure 😅
lol. This one had not been cleaned in years. This is more of a deep clean
I’m impressed actually I am at the end of the video now Indo think heat/sun on your bag will help I am actually on her because I got lucky today and fount the roaster and the Dutch oven and a pot paid up at a thrift for their condition being Dull needing cleaned etc but nice only 40 bucks for the three I am hoping to make a show stopper out of them with your instructions 🤓thanks for the video
That was a great price for the 3 for sure. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
I have one question to you or anyone that owns Magnalite. Some people call it a Roast pot Some call it a Dutch oven . What do y'all call yours?
Honestly I call them both Dutch oven and roaster. It’s pretty universal.
Hello from Schulenburg, Texas 😊thank you for sharing this video I have 4 of them they're are in great condition now I know how to clean them when needed.
That’s great!!! Glad we could help !!!
What do you clean the inside with
If heavy stained you can use the oven cleaner. Or just clean with dawn
Thinks for the tip
Your Welcome. Hope you enjoyed
I’ve cleaned my Magnalite and polished it but when I get it wet, I see residue of the polish I think. Do I polish some more and use soap and a scrubby or something different? Thanks!
What does it look like exactly ? If you need to send me some pics. My email is in the about section.
Couldn't understand what you were saying after letting it sit the second day/second half of video was talking like cartoon character really fast speed
The stuff that was fast forwarded was basically me just talking. It was sped up to make the video shorter
What was the sandpaper grits? The video was still in warp speed and I couldn't understand what you were saying.
All depends on how detailed you want to get. I did 1000-1200-1500-2000-2500- finished with 3000
I put a steel brush on my drill and did the inside. Took sand paper sponge to outside and lid. Took time.
Steel brush for me personally is to rough. But. It’s not my pan. I hope it turned out well.
THAAAANK YOU!!!! Mine is horrible underneath. Yrrrrrrs.
Glad to help
Good video what type of camera ur using to film
Sony ZV1F
Great restoration thanks
Thank you!
Thank you so much for this! I’m going to do the same for my Wagner Magnalite. Do you use oven cleaner only on the inside? Then a scrubber? Can you sand the inside of the pan?
I personally would not use oven cleaner on the inside. I don’t want my food to taste like it. Probably wouldn’t but my peace of mind. Yes you could sand the inside if you wanted. I know they have a kind of grain to them. I use a scotch bright pad on the inside of mine for tuff stains. The outside is where i use the harsher chemicals
@@OurTexasHomesteaddid you not spray the oven cleaner inside as well? How do you get the black marks and discoloration out of the inside
@@everythingtaj1 I do not put it on the inside. I use a scotch brite pad and just clean it.
@@OurTexasHomesteadoh ok it really looked like you sprayed it on the inside. Thank you
I did on this one it had a stain I could not get out when I tried to scrub it prior. But typically I try not to. If you have to do it. Clean it with soap and water 3-4 times.
Great video! Once you have the pots clean and "pretty" how do you stop the oxidation?
Use mothers mag polish on outadie only, apply with dry paper towel and buff, lots of UA-cam tutorials
Yep. If it gets dull or oxidized. Use the polish on the outside only. To keep it looking good. If it gets to black on the bottom use the oven cleaner like in the video.
I have the same question, and have not found an answer. When I wash my Magnalite pots if I dry with a white towel the towel turns gray/black. 😕
have to do maintenance on these , heat and washing takes the polish off , just need to repolish after
Are magnalites safe to cook out of? Or was cooking in aluminum debunked?
They are safe and still used today
@@OurTexasHomestead I was hoping you would say that ❤️
The aluminum skillets Waffle House uses are magnalite
Yes. The very aged, non-peer reviewed 'reports' that came out a LONG time ago where completely unfounded, non-specific and had no distinct interdiction towards 'aluminum' cookware. The point of discussion identifying 'aluminum' in the brain on the cells had no scientific merit nor clarified chemical connection. Yes, aluminum cookware is safe. Period.
Most definitely I’m sure every restaurant from the loser to the highest of class still are rolling with aluminum pots/pans. Maybe not every pot an pan. But I’m sure each has a few. An they definitely been round forever and going strong. A like said Waffle House to. Forget what brand it is. But it’s not like an old school pans that they been having. It’s a new maker like todays day and age
Beautiful. 💛
Thank you!
Thank you
Your Welcome
Thank you for showing me how to save my precious Magnalite roaster! Was at a quandry how to get it clean again. This is the best roaster on the market past or present.
I agree. They are great. Glad I could help!!
PLEASE put a cloth or protection down on that beautiful wood.
Lol. Will do next time. We have put that table through the ringer
Dude, that is one slick method! Thanks for the video.
Glad I could help !!!
Hiya, do you seasoning the pot after the cleaning? You did a phenomenal job!!!
No I do not. I wait until I use it and let the cook help season.
And thank you for the compliment
Try it by putting the bag in the hot sun ? Like you warm the oven before cleaning may move it along faster but it looks great
