I met Albert Brooks at a grocery store in Hawaii and he was amazingly cool to me. I walked up to him, told him he was a Genius, and he smiled and said, "Thank you. I've been walking around this town for 2 f**king hours waiting for someone to recognize me". Then he made me laugh for 10 minutes straight. Couldn't have been nicer or funnier in person.
I loved Defending Your Life, and showed it to anyone I could. It was like some undiscovered secret, because no one I knew had ever heard of it. Guy is a genius
FANTASTIC that they've finally done a genuine documentary on Albert Brooks. One of the funniest comic voices of the last 60 years and for some reason, there are still so many people of the younger generation now who don't know his work. "Real Life", "Modern Romance", "Lost in America", etc., etc. Nobody makes comedies that great anymore. Just a ridiculously brilliant writer.
Defending Your Life is one of my favorite movies. I recently shared it with my teenage daughter and she absolutely loved it. It's a hidden gem that everyone should watch. His interactions with Meryl Streep are priceless. Also, when I die, I will be expecting endless pasta and pies on the daily. Just sayin'.
Defending Your Life is one of my all time favorite movies. I saw it when I was like 12 and was blown away. I'd never seen anything like that before. I cannot wait to watch this. This is HBO
can not wait. Defending your life should in every film curriculum universities. it's what you can accomplish with no budget , a parking lot tram and a funny script. Mother is a close second. 👏And that sweating scene in Broadcast News!!🤣
Another thing that NOBODY talks about, is how every single time he shows up on the Simpsons it's a masterpeice. 1st off, "You only Move Twice", is the best episode ever made I'll fight any one of you. And his little rant as Tad Spangler with Homer as the credits roll on "The Heartbroke Kid" destroys me every single time I hear it. Delighted Reiner has made this, can't wait to watch
One of the most underrated performers of all time. Cant wait to see this. The Last Hilarious thing I remember him in was curb Your Enthusiasm episode, playing himself, as the Covid Hoarder. Bittersweet because of Larry’s connection to Albert Brooks real life Brother Bob Einstein. Larry must have been so devastated by his death that he NEVER killed off his Character, Funkhouser from the show, just wrote in silly reasons to explain Marty’s absence. Covid Hoarder actually had a lovely, poignant end. I LOVED defending your Life
Love Albert Brooks, I've seen Defending Your Life about 20 times and laugh again and again as if it were the first time. I consider it one of the most brilliant movies ever. His concept of being judged in the afterlife based on how you deal with fear is so clever, and to make comedy out of that is pure genius. And he made Johnny Carson laugh uncontrollably with his 1-derful antics, his impersonating kit was marvelous. Can't wait to see him being interviewed by Rob Reiner !!!
I wasn’t even looking for this trailer but I just stumbled on the scene from Real Life at 1:45 where he uses the phrase “it is what it is”. That movie was from 1979 and I’m sure I had never heard it before. It has become so ubiquitous that I make it a personal rule never say it. But I would not be surprised if he just made it up. He was on a radio show once in Chicago and I had been listening in the drive way waiting for his segment to end but he just kept going. I finally told my wife we should just go meet our friends for dinner about 30 minutes away. When we got there he was still going and we sat in the parking lot for another 45 minutes after arriving at the restaurant. She didn’t even mind he was being so relentlessly funny
Imagine getting Meryl Streep to star in your film, let lone when she was in her prime. Defending Your Life had a tremendous impact on my life. Every few months I’ll encounter a situation, and I find myself asking which decision would come closest to the scene when Brooks buys the first-class ticket to Japan.

Me, too. I saw it when it aired. I used to tell people about that but, and even though they couldn’t quite visualize it, they laughed at the mere concept.
Defending Your Life is one of the movies that is almost like a compass for my life. And it’s so hard to write what is essentially a parable in a way that is not heavy-handed or didactic but instead fascinating, hilarious, and moving.

I fell in love with Defending Your Life when I was a young man, and I continue to use it as a touchstone in my life. I love that film. I was surprised to lean hos brother was Adventure Dave.
Albert first approached Doris Day about that role. She invited him up to her home in Carmel and said she wasn’t interested in the film but wanted to meet him because she thought he was brilliant. She gave him a big tour of her home and when they came to this big patch of land with tiny gravestones she said solemnly “…this is where the dogs go..” Albert said “…to the bathroom?” Needless to say that ended any chance of Doris bring in his movie
"Lost in America" is my favorite comedy of all time. I saw it at the mall theater 5 times when it first came out. I've seen it at least 10 times since then. So many hilarious scenes, with great performances by so many people.
OMG! I can't wait! I'm a HUGE Albert Brooks fan. Lost In America, Defending Your Life, and the vastly underappreciated Mother are three of my favorite films of all time. To this day, if I want to make myself chuckle, I'll just quietly sing to myself "The Desert Inn has heart... The Desert Inn has heart." And I can't think of a better or more appropriate person to be talking to him in this way than the brilliant and wonderful Rob Reiner.
Loved the short films he made for early years of SNL, esp the one where he does "scientific tests" trying to find out why people don't think he is funnt. You the man Albert!
Albert had kind of a weird relationship with SNL. They wanted him early on because the short films he did for PBS were well received and they felt he’d give them some prestige and in return, ratings. But Albert wasn’t sure SNL would be a hit so he based himself on the west coast and just sent films to them. But he became more of a bother to them because his films got longer and longer and they were losing the “live from NYC” they’d wanted to begin with
What's amazing about him and every other great comedian like him is there is no one like him, a unique feel and style ! I love you Al !!! ❤ Also, your maniac, crazy dramatic style is the father I have mentally lost that breaks my heart so when I see u I see him !😢

Defending Your Life was introduced to me by Roger Ebert. I was in my teen watching Siskel and Ebert on public tv. I never forgot that movie. Its in my rewatch rotation every few years.
The crush I had on this man. I could never understand why Holly Hunter's character was so into Williams Hurt's character in Broadcast News when Brooks' Aaron was RIGHT THERE being intelligent, witty and attractive. I taped every interview of him that I could -- if only I had a working VHS player to view them.

This was pretty good. I have absolutely loved him, since I was a little kid. Think the first thing I saw was Broadcast News. I was seven years old and loved it; he's wonderful.

Its a great movie. I wonder why its not that popular
I hope more people see it now. He’s fantastic in it, and Meryl is so relaxed, warm and lovable, too.

He cowrote those movies with Monica Johnson, equally genius at writing, and a feminine touch stone for his films.
Albert might be the funniest genius currently living.
The “fear is like a fog” premise of Defending Your Life literally changed my DNA. Maybe the most impactful movie scene to my life. Bravo, Albert!

So exciting to see behind the scenes a bit.
Me too ! Just yesterday I was thinking about it and couldn't remember the name 😂
Which Brooks' movie: Modern Love? Real Life? Mother? Defending Your Life? Lost in America?
It's more than that, it's a documentary about his entire career. Can't wait to see it!

I sincerely hope this brings about a wave of Defending Your Life getting its due. Movie changed me as a person.
