Producer;
Let's talk about making the perfect soil mix to germinate seeds, and the best part? You only need three simple ingredients. Forget about those expensive market seedling soils-they’re unnecessary. With these three things, your seeds will sprout happily and grow better than ever.
First, we’ll take 40% garden soil. Why garden soil? It’s the foundation of this mix. Garden soil provides natural nutrients and the right texture to support the tiny roots as they begin to grow. It’s what seeds are familiar with in nature. To get the best results, choose loamy soil if possible. Loamy soil is rich, soft, and has excellent drainage. It doesn’t get waterlogged, which is essential because seeds need moisture to sprout, but they also need air to breathe. If your garden soil is clay-like or too sandy, the seeds might struggle. Loamy soil creates the perfect environment where roots can explore freely.
Next, we’ll add 40% fully decomposed manure or compost. This ingredient is the powerhouse of the mix. Fully decomposed manure or compost is packed with nutrients that feed the young seedlings, helping them grow strong right from the start. It also improves the structure of the soil, making it easier for roots to grow deep and spread out. But here’s the important part-make sure the manure or compost is fully decomposed. If it’s not, it can release too much heat or harmful chemicals as it breaks down, which could damage or even kill the delicate seeds. Fully decomposed material, on the other hand, is safe and provides steady nutrition without any risks.
Finally, we’ll add 20% coco peat. Now, why coco peat? This magical ingredient is perfect for holding moisture. Seeds need constant moisture to germinate, but overwatering can lead to rot. Coco peat absorbs water like a sponge and then releases it slowly, keeping the seeds moist without drowning them. It also keeps the mix light and airy, which is essential for good root development. Coco peat doesn’t compact like regular soil, so it creates a soft, nurturing environment where seedlings can thrive.
Once you have your 40% garden soil, 40% fully decomposed manure or compost, and 20% coco peat ready, mix them thoroughly. You want an even blend so that every part of the mix has the same fantastic qualities. When you’re done mixing, fill your seed trays or containers with the soil. Don’t pack it down tightly-keep it light and fluffy so the roots have room to grow.
Now, plant your seeds right away. Follow the instructions on the seed packet to know how deep to place them, but a general rule is to plant them about twice as deep as the size of the seed. Lightly press the soil down after planting to ensure good contact between the seed and the soil, and then water gently. The coco peat will hold just the right amount of water, and the compost will provide nutrients, while the garden soil gives structure.
That’s it! No need for any fancy extras or complex ingredients. This simple mix does everything your seeds need to germinate and grow into healthy, strong plants. Plus, it’s cost-effective and made with natural materials you likely already have or can easily find.
Once your seeds start sprouting, keep the soil slightly moist (but not soggy), and watch them grow. This mix provides the perfect balance of nutrients, moisture, and structure for your little plants to start their journey toward becoming thriving, mature plants. Give it a try-you’ll see the difference this simple recipe makes.

Thanks for this great video, can I use sawdust or biochar in place of the cocopeat?
Yes or no
Garden soil contains weed seeds.
