  • The Stockton Center for International Law at the U.S. Naval War College held a Stockton Center Series Panel addressing the maritime dispute between Ukraine and Russia.
The panel took place on Wednesday, February 10, and includes Prof. Alexander Proelss, Chair in the International Law of the Sea and International Environmental Law, University of Hamburg; Prof. Wolff Heintschel von Heinegg, Chair of Public Law, Europa-Universität Viadrina; and Prof. Anna Petrig, Chair of International Law and Public Law, University of Basel.
The panelists explore the current legal perspectives of the maritime dispute between Ukraine and Russia, borne out of an incident in November 2018 in which Russia challenged Ukraine's access to the Sea of Azov and freedom of navigation through the Kerch Strait. The panel also examines the ongoing Permanent Court of Arbitration case filed by Ukraine against Russia in 2016, and the potential implications for coastal state rights under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
