- You may have heard about the gradually rising tides that threaten to wipe out the Pacific island nation of Kiribati, a country of over 100,000 people spread out among a couple dozen small islands. Whatever your views of global warming, it's important to get to know the people whose homeland may be destroyed.
Spend two hours with them by watching "The Curse," the movie more than 100 of them helped me to create when my wife and I were stationed on Marakei Island in the Peace Corps. It was my final project with them, but I'm hoping it won't be the last movie made in this beautiful and amazing country.
As a health volunteer I had to pick a topic for the movie that related to my job, so I chose alcohol abuse - a problem in most countries - and decided to explore it in a humorous way. I hope you find the movie entertaining as a fictional story. But more important, I hope you learn something true about the I-Kiribati people. By the time the credits roll, you may have come to agree with me that the Kiribati are a generous, warm, clever, and fun-loving people who deserve to live out their lives in peace - without having to leave everything behind to live in a Westernized country.
The Kiribati people are survivors like no one I have ever met. But can they survive global warming? Get involved and continue to learn about their plight.

i can't believe i was hooked to watch the whole movie!!........hilarious acting and some funny songs but good story.......alcohol abuse is an issue worldwide but more so in small communities like marakei......never been to marakei but heard it's a beautiful island and from watching this video it sure is!!.....thanks for the share, would love to watch more uploads! :)
tmkirimac, I'm glad you liked the movie! We wanted to make both I-Kiribati and Western audiences able to enjoy the movie. Thanks for watching, Makhalaification. The filming took place in June 2003 as I was wrapping up my Peace Corps service. Some copies of the finished movie made it to the country later that year. I am not sure how many outer islands saw copies of the movie before Peace Corps pulled out of Kiribati in about 2006. I looked for ways to distribute the movie internationally, but none were really affordable, until UA-cam started allowing full-length movies (prior to that, one had to upload a feature movie in parts). It was a lot of fun to make and gratifying to get it out in the world. Please share with friends if you feel so moved!

The USA. I spent about two years in Kiribati as a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer, 2001-2003. Thank you for your interest in Kiribati. It's a lovely place with lovely people, if you ever get a chance to visit.
actually i intended myself to dwell in kiribati and want to live peace....here in asia its very troublesome to live....so what is your advise about me to live in Kiribati based on your experience??
Alak, I wish I could advise you, but I haven't lived there in nearly 15 years. I'm not sure what the rules are in terms of visas. You would have to get in touch with the government there. My hunch is that you would need to have a job there in order to stay in Kiribati for a long length of time. But I could be wrong. Good luck.
Hi, does anyone here know of a good way to learn and be fluent in Gilbertese? I don't mean phrases and greetings, but understanding and comprehension. Evidently there are English speakers fluent in the language, but are there any good resources? Any information would be very appreciated.
+scatdawg123 I think to be fluent in most languages you actually have to go and live among the people for a while so you can use the language every day. Just my personal opinion. Some polyglots can learn through online dictionaries and what-not, plus some personal lessons. There are a lot of Gilbertese in Australia, New Zealand, and scattered around the U.S. as well. You just have to network and track them down and see if they will take the time to speak with you and correct your Gilbertese.
+Eric Larson I don't know any Pacific Islanders of any nation in my stretch of the woods. Are there any books or videos? How did you learn? Are there ways of at least gaining some sort of comprehension and literary knowledge without living in Kiribati?
I lived there almost two years and still only became somewhat proficient. There are few resources but you can find some online and others at large research libraries with a strong linguistics section.
