Agreed. Rolex really only has two different models-the classic and the professional. Classic designs, but certainly not original. That’s why I appreciate the originality and experimentation of Patek (or at least I did until I saw those pics of the new Cubitus).
Same here. Patek Philippe makes the effort to create completely new dials, movements, lug shapes, case shapes, and utilizes different hands designs, and a variety of bezels.
Yup, Yacht-Master,GMT, Sub, explorer 2 are all the same watch. The OP is the base of Datejust, Day-date, explorer, airking, and sky dweller. Only truly different designs is the Daytona and 1908.
I agree with you! I enjoy my Rolex collection but it’s time for me to move into Patek Philippe. I would like to start with a Calatrava and then a more complicated piece. I absolutely love your 6119 and 5205. Two amazing pieces! Thank you again for a very interesting video.
Agreed and I think it’s intentional. Like you said, each model has many many variations. The DJ range is a prime example. Different bezels, bracelets, dials, hour markers, gems, two-tone precious metal, full precious metal. Rolex basically makes the same sport watches, but with enough variety in each model line to ensure that there is something for everyone. Which is why the brand has such wide appeal. There’s the solid gold day date for a gentleman like yourself, and a plan OP for a younger person. Experimentation and boldness is not part of their brand ID and it works for them.
Fair point on the ceramic bezel watches! But I think the case shape is so perfect itd be very hard to fix. Also, looking forward to your thoughts on the new patek cube 😄
Regarding that, I will need to reserve final judgement until (and if) I see it in-person. From the images, the finishing does not seem up to the standards of the Nautilus, and the design does not appear to be as pleasing.
I agree with all your points. I have a modern Submariner Date, DJ, Explorer, and OP, as well as my late father’s DJ and GMT-Master (I). After getting all these watches in a relatively short period of time, I realize there’s nothing else I’d like from the Rolex catalog. I once contemplated adding a YM or a GMT-Master II, but I find they would be too repetitive in my collection. Earlier this year I contemplated getting a DD, but when I realized I could get an unworn Patek 5205 second-hand for even less money than a DD, the choice was clear to me. Right now, the only watches I’d like to get over the next several years are a GO Senator Perpetual Calendar and an older Patek World Time with a true guilloche dial.
Agreed and probably not by accident. Watch collecting is largely a new phenomenon (past 10-15 years) where people will own multiple Rolex. Before you were lucky to sell someone a professional and classical model.
@@sc1 Oh, without a doubt they know what they’re doing. Heck, even the current “backlash” against Rolex is just a niche crowd and manufactured anger - they’re not hurting for business.
Yes, there seems to be lot of blowback against Rolex AD practices (from what I hear), but it will likely blow over, and there will still remain a significant backlog of demand.
Don’t forget the Explorer II which is a beefy GMT Master II with a steel bezel. You’ve also got the Explorer which is the Oyster Perpetual dressed up as a field watch 😅
The Yachtmaster case with its rounded sides is better looking IMHO than the straight, "chunky hexagon with a circular bezel bolted on top" that is the Submariner / GMT Master. I think the Daytona is similar to the Yachtmaster In this respect.
Personally i think Rolex it right. A new line won’t work. Yes they are all similar but i honestly think it’s just that timeless design. It’s like getting a t shirt you like that fits well and suits you, so you get it in all the colours. Still good to have a smart shirt/suit in the closet. Rolex is the t shirt, Patek is the suit. Each has their place in a collection
Idk about other parts of the world but in NYC every salesperson has a Rolex. It’s known to be a flex or douche brand. Not something I’m willing to associate myself with.
I always find it silly that folks will spend money to have the same exact watch but a different bezel color lol I have my Explorer 124270 as my one watch. Rolex won’t change anything because everyone still goes crazy for them.
I agree, rolex watches are relatively one dimentional and boring. This sales model works well in a hype heavy market, but is no longer sustainable. Ive moved on from my rolex phase as well a year ago...i now lust after independant brands that show of movements and innovation in watch making like MB&F, Debethune, Greubal Forsey, Armin Strom, Arnold and Son, etc...
Most sane people would only want maybe 1 professional watch and 1 classic watch. At a push. Maybe one watch would do most normal people. Those who collect multiple, expensive watches are not sane or normal (most of us watching, myself included)! We do get great pleasure from the watches though and Rolex are amongst the best.
I was a sane/normal person from 2003-2018: Owned 1 DateJust and 1 Submariner Date…. a two-watch collection… Then after 2018, something snapped, and I got pulled back into the Rolex rabbit hole. Hard to explain.
@@sc1 Similar journey here. Omega SMP only watch for 13 years then in 2022 something happened. Financial security and influence of youtube maybe. The realisation (or delusion) that Rolex hold value so not really spending maybe. Next stop Daytona and Patek. Keep the content coming.
Very OK to have both. Very different colors, and different movements, and an extra GMT functionality. I'm just pointing out that the case design and bracelet design are the SAME. Neither good, not bad, depending on your point of view...
Ask any non watch collector, and pretty much Sub, GMT, Explorer2, Divemaster, Yachtmaster….would all just be Submariners. I actually think its why Rolex are so popular. Kinda have 2 designs in many flavours, to suite the masses. Rolex success is due to non watch collectors after all.
Wow! Hardly 3 weeks have gone by since you bought the white gold Daytona 😂😂 I am going to call you this one SC, if they are all the same, and you already had 2-3 Daytonas, why did you get yet another white gold Daytona😂😂
Fair call-out! My latest Daytona is the greatest. No regrets. As I said, Daytona is in a separate category. I'm just making an argument to myself: the next Sub, GMT, Datejust, or Day-Date will look too similar to what I already have. No need to add another one. I'm done with Rolex... (But always more room for another PP).
Respectfully, whatever, Rolex have been the number one brand for decades and taking over the pre-owned market since it is becoming bigger than the new watch market and most of their models sell above Msrp. Good luck getting a brand new Rolex from Bucherer!
Just got a DateJust Mint Green with smooth bezel and jubilee bracelet without having a purchase history. Live a block away from them in Chicago and introduced myself- said I was starting to get involved again as a small collector and followed up with me about 6 weeks later. Offered me a Mint Green but fluted and said no. Thought that might be it- she said don’t worry, will still keep you in mind and about 6 weeks later called me with what I wanted. @@sc1 we discussed this on your other video post- you had just visited Burdeen’s and were impressed and said Razny were not so accommodating. I hate ceramic bezels, too shiny to me. I prefer by far the previous aluminium bezels.
Good observation. I am also of the same opinion.
You can also say they have the same DNA, like siblings and cousins that could be all lookalike.
Good and bad. Just throwing out an opinion. Similar designs, so they match up in a collection. But eventually it can get too repetitive...
