"A quick one while he's away" is a reference to the fact that George had temporarily quit the Beatles when this session was recorded in January 1969 (telling the other Beatles to run an ad in the Melody Maker and John suggesting they bring in Eric Clapton instead). Hence the 'take it George!' comment from Lennon at the start, in typical sarcastic mode. Not a Who cover, although a Who reference since John was present for the Who's performance of A Quick One at the Stones' Rock And Roll Circus in December of '68.
@@TruSuperGamerFriends Yes, and that's why it's being called 'A Quick One' but it's clearly not the Who song, or even an actual 'song' for that matter.
If you haven't seen it you should check out the Mike Douglas Show with John & Yoko as guest hosts for the week. John gets to perform with one of his idols, Chuck Berry. During their first sound Yoko screams and Chuck keeps looking back with a WTF look on his face. Fortunately someone had the good taste to turn off her mic during the second song.
David Neale I saw it. He rolled his eyes on the first song. The second song, she's yelling, but no sound is coming out...Classic snub well deserved. What a pretentious bitch. To think she could yell noises into a mike, and try and convince people it's some sort of artistic statement..It reminds me of Kanye West's appearance on SNL last month. WTF? And then MTV indulges him all the time he wanted to vent his slight-minded bullshit on the VMAs the other night. Pathetic. I can't say I watched that crap, but I did see the news clips.
+John Lemon I agree, it sounds like a Zeppelin song but in no way at all does Yoko sound like Robert Plant. In fact I think her voice is EXTREMELY obnoxious, totally ruined it for me.
I'm just gonna focus on the Beatles here. If George isn't there and that's John playing rhythm, that just shows that he'd become a MEAN guitarist by the time the band were wrapping up. Some sweet drumming towards the end too. I wish the Beatles had allowed themselves show their hard rockin' chops on record more. "Helter Skelter" is great, but there's something extra rough 'n' raw about this track that I love. For a couple of years John really stretched out on "Cold Turkey" and the Plastic Ono Band albums too, then he seems to have got it out of his system. In some parallel universe somewhere there's a John who made a career out of that sound, and is remembered as one of the grittier late '60s bluesmeisters.
Amazing. Paul was one mean guitarist too, he plays a lot of the band's best solos in my opinion. George really came into his own later, when he developed that trademark slide style.
Could well have happened yeah. I respect George but he never had the wildness and ferocious streak of John and Paul. His playing's always carefully thought out and understated.
aaronfledge the reason why paul argued with george a lot cause he wanted george to be at same level as john and him. But george is like " I wont play if you dont want me to play" which is not the point. Then when george took a break John said "lets invite clapton" which is understandable. I once can relate to george I wasnt able keep up with my bandmates and its frustrating for me and for them but instead of whining I let myself to be taught by my bandmates.
Have to admit, there were times here when the band kinda caught fire with that bluesy groove. Too bad they also had to include Yoko getting a tonsillectomy without anesthesia on this.
She did that stupid bullshit all the time. The worst example is when John and his band performed with Chuck Berry on national TV. I would have lost my shit if I was John.
For the love of humanity, couldn't the engineer simply have turned her down in the mix and have it only playing in John and Yoko's headphones? Humour them, if you will.
In '66 during the Revolver sessions, an engineer named D'abo Zagnut turned off a guitar mic without permission because he thought the guitar was out of tune. His body was never found.
Not sure if anyone wants the details, John was being sarcastic when he said "take it George" as it was after he left the session changing the lyrics to the "The Oogum Boogum Song" by Brenton Wood, using the lyrics "Cut out the B___Sh_t", etc. This is from Rolls 117a & 108b, from the Nagra Tapes, recorded (filmed) Jan. 10, 1969.
"Take it George" - the day after George had walked out haha. It's ok until about 3.40 when Yoko starts. Some nice bits of guitar from John - not all of it - but it's a jam, they're messing about. Lennon had performed at the Stones Rock n Roll Circus the previous month, playing Yer Blues, while The Who stole the show with a great version of A Quick One
