Oooof. I'm about to do my A2 and going by what you're saying I think I'm following the same spec. I'm planning to do medicine too so I can really relate and I love your videos. Thank you for the advice I'm now motivated to smash my IALs:)
PLANS!! Write plans for essays before hand so you have set points that you know you can reproduce. That way you will be able to have a few points to help you memory in the essays!
Hi! I'm really struggling with the new specification exam questions- the markscheme is SO SPECIFIC! You don't say the exact word they're looking for, you don't get the mark even if you know what you're talking about. And we only have last year's exam and the one set of specimen papers to look at! The old spec exam styles are completely different so doing those papers I dont even find helpful or applicable :( Trying to revise now and I'm just really struggling because there's SO MUCH and I feel so demotivated because in the exam I never even know what they're asking for even if I do manage to remember everything 😂
A little music im sitting the same exam in one week i know what you mean for me its just writing down random key points which seem relevant to the questions and half of the time these types of answers will give me the mark.
Memorising mark schemes is how I do well in chemistry, why am I not doing it in biology…. I’m same situation as you- I enjoy the human body systems that we learn about, definitely more than plants and ecology. And I totally agree on the revision aspect. Whenever I feel like revising something I always turn to maths rather than biology because of how content heavy and writing intensive the biology is. It took the most time out of my holiday to revise before my mock exams next week.
I’m thinking about biology and chemistry but seeing what everyone says about those subjects I’m really not sure. Is there anything I should know before I chose how are those subjects compared to gcses.
@@SkillselderFATENitro a lot you learn more about body systems in more detail and what biological molecules are made up of and gene expression and how medical conditions
Thank you for your video I am currently doing biology by going through past papers I recognized that despite the questions on certain topics are being asked very differently the answers are usually quite similar.
Which is more important for biology; making notes or past papers? There is a lot of content and most of my time is spent doing notes leaving less time for exam questions
exam questions are by far better, there is scientific evidence that they improve your grades, but I understand that notes can be a good way of summarising the information you need to know. I would say, do the notes, but spend more time on those exam questions!
notes are good for collating the info from your textbook, classnotes and other sources. it might be worth researching a couple of different note taking methods because if the way you currently do it isnt helping you, no its not worth it. most people would do notes first and then papers as notes are a form of revision. I personally made notes by e.g. biology: writing each spec point on a paper and doing a mind map around it with the info. then at later dates i can follow one section of the mindmap to review the information. if you have less time to make notes, just bring it down to the core info and make it as concise as possible. assuming you have exams coming up in may/june, you have plenty of time to do both notes and exam papers. but do make sure you get around to exam papers as that enables you to see how examiners want you to answer questions. but the whole point of making notes is as a revision resource, which you cant do from exam papers
I would say having a good set of notes to revise from is really important, but exam questions are probably slightly more important because of the way the exams are. There are a lot of application questions in biology that you can only really get good at if you practice them and start to learn what the examiner is asking for! Plus so many question styles are repeated so you can pick up marks by learning what the different styles of question are and how to answer them. There are many resources like CGP or other revision notes that you can use if yo are running out of time making notes, but you cant simulate doing the practice paper. Hope this helps! Good luck!
Thank you so much for this video. It is very informative and many points I'll take on board e.g. past papers, key words, vague mark schemes. However, I'm not sure if it's just the new linear OCR biology but I'm finding that most of the exam questions (at least for AS last year) were application questions (so I think you referred to them as "How Science works") and a lot of "Suggest" questions so there's no definitive answer for them and it seemed like all the content we revised was not even useful because the majority of the questions were based on scenarios which we had not explicitly learnt before. There's so much content and all the topics seem mixed up. Some are really interesting and relatable like the nervous system, homeostasis, kidneys, liver, heart etc but then there's a whole module on Biological Molecules which contains a lot of chemistry not to mention photosynthesis and respiration so if you don't do chemistry (like me) it can be overwhelming at times. There's also a lot of interpretation of graphs and data which can be annoying as well but hey...I'm going to stop rambling and get to some revision. lol Thanks for your video anyway - it has still been useful!
No problem! I'm glad you found the video useful. The biology course is very diverse in the range of topics and the skills required to do well and thats what makes it interesting but also tough. Dont worry too much about being overwhelmed, I was as well at your stage! For the application questions, practice is key!! Once youve done enough of them you will start to understand what the examiner is asking for and that makes them easier to tackle. If you find certain areas more tricky I would definitely make a timetable or a list of the things you are struggling with and then focus more of your time on those bits. Everyone finds certain parts more tricky so dont worry too much!! It will eventually make sense! Good luck for the rest of your revision!
Senthooran Kath Thank you so much for this! I didn’t do enough past papers for AS (barely any) so I’ll make sure I won’t make the same mistake this year.
This was so useful, thankyou so much!! I was just wondering how you actually memorised the information for biology, I never know how to actually get all of the info into my head?
Revise with the specification, your notes and a revision guide like CGP. That means each topic you go over, you look at the information in 3 different ways and it helps to learn it!
not sure when he did but if you're doing your exams this year it would be a good idea to start now during easter to minimise stress closer to the time. Use now to consolidate past information and get a grip on any concepts you didnt manage to get over the year, its important you understand everything before you start revising! different subjects will require different techniques and being in a2 im sure youve figured out some of which helps you for certain subjects but Sen has made a revision tips video for more help:)
I started in the Easter holidays, and that will give you plenty of time to go over all the topics and past papers before the exams come. Also if you have done revision over the holidays you still have a chance to ask teachers questions once you get back if you've got any queries. I definitely recommend using a revision guide made for your exam board (CGP)! They follow the specification point by point and give you the main details you need to know but use it to supplement your school notes as they are usually more detailed. Lastly, I recommend that you go over the mark scheme answers after you do a past paper as a lot of questions are repeated, so if you know what the examiner is looking for then you can easily pick up a lot of marks!! Good luck for your exams, and feel free to ask any more questions if you are struggling with anything!

Thea videos really motivate me to get that extra revision done! Am hoping to study medicine at Cambridge like yourself. In year 11 now. Would you recommend taking physics or further maths at A level. Which one would be more helpful?
Physics for sure
