    I agree and understand where you’re coming from P, but if a coach loses the locker room, you have to let them go regardless of their performance or blame. It's hard to recover a locker room if players, especially the star players don't respect the coach.
    However, the fact that there is a recurring pattern of coaches losing the locker room for this team suggests that there’s deeper issues within the organization. From ownership, to GM, to the players, there’s a certain attitude about coaching that I think needs to change

    Feels like everyone in this comments section saying "THEY COULDN"T BUILD CULTURE WITH DARVIN THO!!!!" are missing the entire point of the argument here. He said multiple times it wasn't about Darvin Ham, it's about the Lakers' choices as an organization and who they choose to hire and fire.

  • @i_am_above
    @i_am_above 2 місяці тому +6

    P you’re right, culture and continuity is very important for coaches to have success, but can you please tell me what kind of culture Darvin Ham was building? Can you tell me the identity of the team? What was his principles on offense? What about defense? You often criticize the Lakers for playing a lot of 1 on 1 ball, standing around and just ball watching right?
    So do you think the solution was to keep Darvin Ham and look to make changes somewhere else?

      Ham has been called out by players for 2 years. Vogel didn’t get called out like that. Vogel got fired for reasons not all about basketball. Vogel rubbed some people the wrong way at the end. So the Lakers firing coaches every 2-3 years is a weak correlation, not a pattern. A pattern means there is a core component to the phenomena. Some of the Lakers coaches had good reasons to be fired. Now the part that is wrong about all of this is that they are blamed for most of the problems, being scapegoats. Are we better off without Ham? Yes, but was it all his fault? No. If Ham was a better coach, we would have lost the series 2-4. We lost to the Nuggets because we refuse to get a proper center to guard him so that we don’t have to double team him so much. That is partially on Rob Pelinka, but LBJ signs off on the moves, so LBJ thought the Lakers didn’t need a true center either. AD has been begging for one. LBJ/Ham/Pelinka all have a big part in the Lakers being undersized against the Nuggets. Ham likes to play small ball a lot, so this is what you get. So is switching coaches going to get them past Denver? No. If I was Ham, how many defensive schemes could I run when my best defensive player can’t guard Jokic 1v1, so I would have to use double team schemes over half the game, and can’t use most of my single coverage schemes, cause Jokic going to toast that coverage. You need the right personnel to be able to run certain schemes against certain teams in certain matchups. Ham’s fault in the Denver series wasn’t the disadvantage they had to play with. They Lakers weren’t well coached on how they needed to rotate after doubling, but to be fair, they probably didn’t have to run it a lot, because they didn’t have to run it against most teams, especially not double teaming down low, because AD can handle most teams’ bigs by himself, but against Jokic he cannot, and then they had Rui guard Jokic a lot so that AD didn’t get burnt out on defense guarding Jokic. So I don’t think the Lakers were well oiled on their rotations after doubling down low. Where Ham was at fault was on the offense end. Lakers pick n roll sets were beautiful, but when Denver started switching the screens, Lakers didn’t have a counter offensive scheme to punish switching. It was more just trying to let LBJ and AD play hero ball, but AD was getting doubled in the post in 2nd halves, and the Lakers had no schemes to punish the double teams, so Denver just forced LBJ to play hero ball, which wore him out. LBJ can’t play hero ball for a whole game like he used to. So when LBJ got tired, we then gave the ball to other role players and expected them to play hero ball. So it’s been known for decades that in the playoffs, pick n roll is easy to shut down, and that you can’t just run PnR in the playoffs; you must have another counter scheme in case your PnR gets countered, which it will. So Ham was lacking on the offensive side, which lost us a game or two in the series, but I still don’t think we win the series if we were better on offense, because our defense was still getting exposed badly.
      Then you have LBJ getting payed max money to only play at 70% effort during the regular season, and understandably so, but we can’t get high seedings like that, so we end up getting rough first round matchups.

    I agree with the move if we have a motivated candidate to take the job. Our personnel decision suffered a lot from the influence of Klutch Sports, LeGM, etc. also the lasting effects of Magic’s President of Basketball Ops tenure. When Pelinka finally took complete personnel control we found a spark and possibly fool’s gold with a WCF run. The injuries to surrounding role players this season doesn’t help the W/L but I firmly believe Pelinka locking in a proven coach, a few tweaks to personnel, and developing actual trust and culture in this team can go incredibly far. I disagree w losing Phil, our development of low draft picks is crucial to helping accumulate assets but he still could be brought back by the new coach. Roster wise we need to choose Reaves or Russell, Rui needs to be flipped for a wing, bron & AD need to focus on being a 4&5 duo who locks in on defense and allow D’Lo to play a more natural role on O as a scorer while using Davis and Bron in actions that aren’t predictable. A two way guard and wing for Reaves & Rui would be a huge upgrade in our floor and ceiling.

    Pee we get your point in saying that the great/winning teams build continuity with a coach. But our point is that these coaches weren’t good, so what would be the reason for the Lakers to just sit on these coaches when they all have glaring problems. Like you said once you find a coach with that vibe/voice that you can build with who’s also good with the Xs & O’s yea you should keep them but Walton, Vogel, and Ham weren’t those guys so why not fire them? Yes there are more problems than the coach when the team fails especially the Russ trade but we can also acknowledge that these dudes weren’t good. Changes don’t need to just happen with the coaching but the players as well and I think that’s gonna happen this offseason.

    I think there are some basketball reason why Darvin Ham got fired. Terrible rotations and there had seem to be a lack of attention to detail and lack of accountability. However 2 things can be true so my question how in the world does Rob Pelinka have a job still? How do you go from that 2020 championship team to one of the strangest roster fits in the league. Playing AD at the 5 at the time, still no trustable shooting, and the weird dynamic between AR and Dlo in the back-court. What exactly is the Lakers identity? I mean the offense was better this year but the defense fell off. Last year it was the defense that was good until they ran into Denver. I just don’t know what the thought process was. Lakers don’t have the time needed to build a team like that with their current roster like the other teams around the league.
    They should’ve kept their roster or as much of it as possible after their 2020 ring. They built up a championship team and then got rid of everything that made them who they were expect for the two stars. They got rid of everything looking for a super team and ever since then they’ve been on a downfall of looking for someone to blame, and players or coaches that didn’t fit.
    At this point they just gotta keep trying this method until lebron retires because they don’t really have another choice
