Yeah, this was great! I had no idea they'd filmed that movie in Spain. And yes, Northern Spain and Southern France are a lot like the US. The Pyrenees are a lot like the Appalachian Mountains, the people laid back like Texans. It's a nice place to visit.
This is exceptional! Learned a lot about Spain and that great movie. I agree, iconic music. My husband and I got to visit Barcelona and really enjoyed it. The famous artist, Gaudio created magic. One of the entertainers on the ship were from Spain. We shared a meal and thoroughly enjoyed their company, and talent on stage.
The good and the bad ugly was not just an excellent movie, but is considered by many critics to be the greatest western movie ever made. It is my favorite along with another Clint Eastwood movie, the unforgiven.
I don't like most Westerns, but this is just a classic in so many ways. One of the things I think makes it special is the tie-in with the Civil War, which isn't dealt with in most (any?) other Westerns. I'm huge Eli Wallach, fan, too.
In the US it released at the end of 1967. I was in 5th grade and my teacher loved history. He had us enact different events, such as battles in the Civil War. He told us we should see this movie since it showed the reality of the civil war better than any other movie. On that recommendation my mom took us to the movie. I'm not sure she knew what she was getting into with kids our age. LOL. I still remember it, though.
Wow! I never thought I'd see you in Spain. I've been to Sad Hill twice 2003 and 2005. Before the location was renovated. I bought one of the graves which was used to restore the cemetery. Cost was $15.00. Thanks for the great adventure.
@@SidetrackAdventures When they built the cemetery the Spanish army brought in dirt from another area and made the mounds. That dirt was full of weeds and grasses that were darker than the surrounding field. There were no crosses, and the main rock area was covered with weeds and dirt, but the graves stood out.

Sergio Leone was a very creative, and iconic director. With talent like Eastwood, VanCleve, and Walach he created some of the greatest “spaghetti westerns” of all time, and brought a great amount of respect to the genre. Along with some of the best musical scores for films ever created. Thanks again for another wonderful “Side Track Adventure”.
I was stationed in Germany in the early 80s, I traveled down to Barcelona twice and it really reminded me of home state California, thanks for the tour.

This is absolutely fantastic! I bet a lot of people watching this has the music playing in their head , I sure did. Makes me remember the very last scene where Eli Walach (Tuco) was left with the noose around his neck, standing/balancing on top of a headstone as Clint Eastwood (Blondie) rode away. I did not know the cemetery was a constructed set for the movie... amazing. This has to be your best video, featuring something from a very icon movie. LOL, now I'm recalling some of great lines and scenes...Tuco in the bath tub when an gunman starts talking, gun shots ring out killing him. Tuco gets out of the tub and tells the dead man "When you have to shoot, SHOOT, don't talk". I love that movie.
Lived in Spain as an exchange student in 1972-1973 when Franco was still in power... made it from my base in Barcelona to Madrid, Toledo and Cuenca (among other places) but never to Burgos. And now I'm too old to travel around like I did 52 years ago. Glad you enjoyed.
Honestly its eerie when a location on another continent looks so similar to where I grew up in So Cal. Scenery could easily be something from road trips growing up.
Wow! This is great. I wish I had known of this location during our trip to Spain. We drove right along this route to San Sebastian. And the cafe's in the gas stations serve some good food.

This is fabulous. This was released in 1967 in the states. We were in h/s and for the rest of our lives, my friends and I are huge fans of these westerns. Thank you for doing this. First off like many here The Good, The Bad and the Ugly is absolutely one of my favorite all time movies to watch, for me it's a tie with John Wayne's Searchers for the best Western of all time. I just wanted to add a few personal things about your video I think you might be interested in. First of all El Cid is one of my ancestors due to my great great grandfather going back 500 years named Juan De Zaldavar who was a Conquestador who rode with Coronado in the 1540's and was one of his captains. Juan De Zaldavar was one of the first Europeans to ride through both Texas and New Mexico and they made it all the way to Kansas before turning back because of the brutal weather on the great plains. Another interesting fact is my great great grandfather going back 500 years named Balthztzar Temino De Banuelos was born in Burgos and was also a Conquestador and he was one of 4 founders of the Mexican city and state of Zacatecas. One of the other 4 founders of Zacatecas is another of my great grandfather's going back around 10 generations named Cristobal De Onate. Cristobal was also the founder of Guadalajara but more famously Cristobal's oldest son is the founder of New Mexico in 1598 and that is where The Good, The Bad and the Ugly is supposed to take place. Juan De Onate's youngest brothers name is Alonso De Onate and that is my grandfather going back around 10 generations ago pretty cool huh!
Brilliant video. I'm English and I've visited this place in North Eastern Spain. The Good the bad & the ugly is my favourite film of all time. Incidentally, the Hacienda Nightclub in Manchester (Factory records/Tony Wilson) used to have this music playing in their bars. Fantastic place. Steeped in history. Best shoot out ever. Brilliant. ¡Bienvenido a España! I was born in New Mexico and have lived in Spain for over 15 years. So I was surprised by a couple things from your video: 1. That there was a scene in the spaghetti westerns filmed outside Almeria province - which is in the southeast, in Europe's only true desert. 2: That the locals have kept up the cemetery crosses and park for so many years. So well done, Steve! By the way, New Mexico looks like Spain in many locations, so I understand why the Spanish settlers felt at home there. The movies could have easily been filmed in NM, but I presume Spain was easier to get to for the Italians that produced them. Spain is chock full of history and stunning terrain, so you could do well visiting other places. I presume that the top of your list that would be of interest to Americans. You might therefore start with the monastery of La Rábida, where Columbus stayed between 1491-92 waiting for financial backing from the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella. It is preserved as it might have looked during those years.

Love it! My family is from there, near St. Domingo de Silos. My grandfather's cattle used to graze in the Mirandilla pasture, which is where the cemetery is located. ❤
I have the record for the soundtrack. My oldest brother, born in 1944, loved the movie. He passed away in 1969 from a work related accident. I was 7 months old, but I have paintings he did and a few old vinal records. Now I want to get it out of storage and play it again.

The GB&U was one of the best films. The scene with Tuco running around Sad Hill in a total frenzy for the right grave and the music that accompanied it is among the most evocative of any film scenes. This is easily one of your best videos yet. I had no idea that Sad Hill still existed. Thanks so much for bringing this to us.

This is really awesome being in Madrid especially at the cemetery that was in the movie the Good, the Bad and the Ugly and it looks almost the same with a little more grass however. This was awesome Steve! I’ve seen earlier videos of the site on UA-cam (before the restoration) and the circle of stone was completely overgrown with grass. Glad they restored it. The effort it took to create all those graves for a scene was what made this movie an epic. No cgi then.

There is a documentary on UA-cam about some people that found sad hill decades after the movie, a bunch of volunteers stepped up and restored the cemetery then showed the movie on a giant screen in the center
Great, a sidetrack adventure over on this side of the Atlantic! Those Sergio Leone westerns were hugely popular in Europe during the 1960's and I well remember as a teenager going to the local cinema with my best buddy to watch the series of spaghetti westerns starring Clint Eastwood. Many years later a few friends and I went on a mega European road trip from the UK which included travelling down to southern Spain. One of the areas we drove through was the Tabernas desert in Almeria province which provided the backdrop for many of the spaghetti westerns. Remote and rugged, perfect for film makers. The province has several areas of film lots which are mainly tourist attractions these days but are still used by film makers. One of them is called Little Hollywood, if you're ever in Spain again that whole area around Almeria is worth visiting but gets very busy with tourists during the summer. Real shame about the weather it can be very changeable in Europe this time of year.

@@flitsertheo I kind of meant the place generally. Any place that looked like that in the 60s would now have a shopping mall on it now. I live in Los Angeles California and the area around here is very very different from what it was in the 60s. I mean the whole of southern California.
Now that is really what you call a sidetrack adventure, on the other side of the pond kind of sidetrack, thank you for taking us here our friend, I have lived in Germany for 7 years, but was not fortunate to go to Spain, you should check out that part of Europe if you can, but this is awesome, my favorite spaghetti western with Clint, and I was only 4 yrs old when that was produced. That’s because they’re both Mediterranean climates. Western edges of continents tend to have these similarities.

A timeless movie!! If they ever rerelease it in theaters it would still be relevant.

I have the record for the soundtrack. My oldest brother, born in 1944, loved the movie. He passed away in 1969 from a work related accident. I was 7 months old, but I have paintings he did and a few old vinal records. Now I want to get it out of storage and play it again.

This was one my dad's favorite movies. I have many found memories of watching it with him.

The GB&U was one of the best films. The scene with Tuco running around Sad Hill in a total frenzy for the right grave and the music that accompanied it is among the most evocative of any film scenes. This is easily one of your best videos yet. I had no idea that Sad Hill still existed. Thanks so much for bringing this to us.

Definitely anyone could get there. The dirt road got a little rough, but had no problem in the Puma.

This was awesome Steve! I’ve seen earlier videos of the site on UA-cam (before the restoration) and the circle of stone was completely overgrown with grass. Glad they restored it. The effort it took to create all those graves for a scene was what made this movie an epic. No cgi then.

Good morning Steve. Perfect timing too. Warner Brothers is doing (so far) a 6 episodes in a series of the legacy of Clint Eastwood. I'd recommend viewing this series as it illustrates just how much this actor/director has contributed to the film industry! Thanks for the video Steve! (UA-cam)

There is a documentary on UA-cam about some people that found sad hill decades after the movie, a bunch of volunteers stepped up and restored the cemetery then showed the movie on a giant screen in the center
I've seen the trailer but haven't watched the full movie. I'm going to try and watch this week.
After watching the video, I expect many people will visit the sight. Hopefully traffic will not be a problem!

Great, a sidetrack adventure over on this side of the Atlantic! Those Sergio Leone westerns were hugely popular in Europe during the 1960's and I well remember as a teenager going to the local cinema with my best buddy to watch the series of spaghetti westerns starring Clint Eastwood.
Many years later a few friends and I went on a mega European road trip from the UK which included travelling down to southern Spain. One of the areas we drove through was the Tabernas desert in Almeria province which provided the backdrop for many of the spaghetti westerns. Remote and rugged, perfect for film makers.
The province has several areas of film lots which are mainly tourist attractions these days but are still used by film makers. One of them is called Little Hollywood, if you're ever in Spain again that whole area around Almeria is worth visiting but gets very busy with tourists during the summer. Real shame about the weather it can be very changeable in Europe this time of year.
SPAIN, that's one country that I always wanted to go to, Awesome video, and thanks for taking us along, I like the movie "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly". THE SARGE

This is a 2015 recreation. The place was almost gone before that.
@@flitsertheo I kind of meant the place generally. Any place that looked like that in the 60s would now have a shopping mall on it now. I live in Los Angeles California and the area around here is very very different from what it was in the 60s. I mean the whole of southern California.
Now that is really what you call a sidetrack adventure, on the other side of the pond kind of sidetrack, thank you for taking us here our friend, I have lived in Germany for 7 years, but was not fortunate to go to Spain, you should check out that part of Europe if you can, but this is awesome, my favorite spaghetti western with Clint, and I was only 4 yrs old when that was produced. Thank you for your efforts.
