I was a mechanic for a highway department for over 30 years and one thing I learned about tires on a dump truck if you want to get the best life out of your tires look at the recommended tire pressure that’s how them tires was tested if it says 120 psi that don’t mean 90 that don’t mean 100 you’ve got to keep your tire pressure where it’s recommended so many guys want to run low pressure because of the ride it’s a dump truck If it says 120 pounds put 120 pounds in it good video talk to you later
You’re doing a hell of a lot more than most guys do, nice to see you’re actually trying new stuff to see what the best tire per dollar is, as well as actually taking the time to note how a tire is reacting to how you’re using them! The dump truck and truck industry needs more JST’s!
Balance your tires they last longer also they make centering lug nuts to center your steer tires. This makes them run true alot of tire guys are to lazy to use them because it's a extra step. Also put a few drops of oil on lug studs when reinstalling saves your studs from heat and seizing up.
I have run recaps and I found I can buy Toyo's for about 30 bucks more than recaps, so I just use them. I have ran michelins as steer tires and they are awesome till you realize the high cost and fast wear are killing your bottom line. I ran those xdt grippers for a long time, but they are awesome in the mud but kind of soft on the shoulder. I stick now with closed shoulder aggressive inner toyos. I am pretty happy with them. Bottom line is durability and cost.
I run a 30 truck fleet (30 tractors and 35 trailers) in WI, we haul frac sand in pneumatic tanks. The trucks run either a 6-mile or a 40-mile loop, which tears the shit out of the equipment loading 27.5 tin in the trailers. Currently, I run a mix of super singles and 11R22.5 on the tractors and trailers. We run all Michelins for new and caps. They don't wear for shit as they are a soft compound. I'm lucky to get 40,000 on a set of XZE load range H steers, which are bus tires. The drives I get about 60,000 on a set of XDN2 Virgin or cap super singles, but about 100,000 out of a set of 11R22.5 XDN2 drives. Trailer tires, I just figure on changing a full set every 90 to 120 days. I was looking at Toyos and Yokohomas as an alternative to switch to because of the harder compound and should last longer. I don't really count miles, I go by time for changing tires, brakes, and service work; so if I can extend out that time it will benefit my operation.
Those Goodyear puncture proof tires are awesome. I have some on my reefer. I have pulled out some deep bolts out of them and no air came out and they are still running great.
Not bad, 70,000 to 80,000 miles between tire changes. Good idea to have a few spare sets all mounted and ready to go while the wheels are sent out for inspection and polishing before mounting a new tire. Makes for a better looking and safer fleet. Not many do even that I'd guess. Supporting the fleet is king or you are going to lose large trying to avoid it. If the work/jobs are there and remain coming, the trucks you have need to be running those jobs 100% which means zero down time is king. Thanks for sharing open/closed shoulder versions in tires.
That's right Garth Clark! If you take care of your Equipment, it will take care of you. Some people just choose to be tight asses, and it that always bites you in the end.
Only complaint with recaps is if the casings get old and start to weather check. If you are using your own cases it’s not so bad but if you take what you can get it gets sketchy. I have had better luck with Chinese tires then recaps
The myth that it is illegal to repair a steer tire is perpetrated by the tire dealers so they can sell more tires. You can repair punctures like a nail or bolt. They can't be section repaired and run on the front. Most tire blowouts are caused by low air pressure. Drivers will lower the pressure on the tires for a better ride because they hear it on the idiot box. [CB radio]
Im a mechanic in a scrap yard and you know a good tire for that. We only get 4 to 6 months out of michelins open shoulders. Cuz I am changing tires all the time on our 7 trucks. Thanks

Wow! Will make sure our boss knows about these Goodyears . We're into longterm interstate widening project. Plenty of offroading, and the whole wicked gamut of tire tortures.I want these tires!
Look into some super singles. 4 tires back there instead of 8. Plus they look cool. Gotta be better floatation too? Try pressing those down into the dirt or sand vs's the older style narrow tires.
I have been running Goodyear tires for years and you can’t go wrong. Screw every other tire company out there Goodyear dura seal is the best shot out there
Should look into armstrong tires. They came back a few years ago and ive heard a ton of good things about them from triaxle guys. Very affordable and supposed to hold there own agenced Michelins and goodyears.
Goodyear will cap ANY good casing I run most caps on back the unicircle So no matter if you have a Chinese or Japanese casing when you recap with Goodyear you NOW have a Goodyear grade tire for half the price!! Goodyear also warranty ALL of their caps If it starts to come off Goodyear will replace free with a same tread height tire to match!! I tried 4 open shoulder cap but they wear out really quick CLOSED shoulder is the way to go
MrJpsj I agree. I’m just saying if you put a good year cap on a China casing. Just cause it looks good do t mean the casing will last the cap. Ya know?

Got a set of Coopers tires on the front of my truck and I like the look of the tires, but the tire wear is not the best. I have a lil bit over 20k on them and there about half wore out. Won't be getting another set of those.
@@cameronnerdin4910 It's a great looking tire, just don't have the mileage out of them compared to a Bridgestone or even a Hankook. I stay up on my tire pressures so I know that's not the problem.

I have a question that maybe you can help with. Why do a lot of triaxle dumps and heavy hauls use 425 and 445 floats and not 315 tires? Is the 315 less stable than the others, do they ride worse?
425/445 float better in mud. 315 are better ride on road and much better in snow (wilder tires float on top of snowy roads which is scary). 315’s, 425 and 445 are all restricted to either 65 or 68 mph. 315’s are rated up to 10,000 lbs each while 425’s can go to 11,400 lbs each. Can’t remember what a 445 can be rated for - they’re not common in my area of NY.
