- 1958 Buick models included the Roadmaster Riviera, Limited series, the Super series, the Century series, Special series and the wagon series called the Century Caballero. Buick’s least popular vehicle was the Limited Convertible model 756, along with the Limited Riviera Sedan and the Limited Riviera Coupe. Only 1,026 units of these models were manufactured with a price of $5,000 in 1958.
From bumper to bumper, these cars featured nearly 19 feet of fins and chrome styling. The 1958 Buick Road Master Riviera model 75R was a great performance model, offering an exclusive known as flight pitch dynaflow engineering.
The front grille on the 1958 Buick received a lot of attention because it contained 160 chrome squares within a huge shell. Many years ago, I had a conversation with a man who worked in a body shop during the early 1960s, and he informed me that the 1958 Buick models were the most difficult vehicles to work on because of the front end design with that massive chrome grille. - Комедії
I had a 58 Buick (Roadmaster) in the early '80s when it was just an elderly used car. (Probably worth more than my NEW car is now, LOL) They WERE well built as mine was rock solid at 23 years old, and EVERYTHING on it still worked even the radio! (It was AM only though Oh well!) Not the best on MPG, But that wasn't a big concern in the 1950s.... As to the "safety buzzer" - (later called "Speed Alert"), This was a feature on the big Buicks at least into the 70s. You set a knob to whatever speed you did not wish to go past, If you did it made a hellacious buzz. The lowest setting was around 15 MPH. It was a harmless prank to crank it to the lowest setting before lending your Buick to a friend who was unfamiliar with the feature. They'd come back 10 minutes later thinking there was something wrong with your car. We were easier to entertain in the "olden days" LOL.
I almost bought a 58 Roadmaster n 1967 for $300, but decided to pass on it. I do remember test driving it. An enjoyable experience. I went on to own several 58 Buicks of all models over the years. I've always liked them even though they did have some problems. Right now a 58 Super 4-dppr HT sits in the garage.
I think it's one in a 100000 chance to see a 1958odle car in the 1980s . In 1988 had a 76 olds 98 it was a novelty 1958 modles were in the scrap heep ! ! By the 80s

When I had my 1958 Buick in 1981, it would be like someone having a 2001 Buick RIGHT NOW! and I can find 1990-2001 Buicks in any shopping center parking lot. TODAY, In "rust belt" Pittsburgh

This grille would live on in rock & roll history, being called out in the "T Rex" song "Bang a Gong". Love that tune, And I think of my '58! And Meanwhile..I'm still thinking....
The Roadmaster Riviera was Buick's special edition car built for GM's Golden Jubilee fiftieth anniversary celebration. The other four were the Chevrolet Bel-Air Impala, Pontiac Bonneville Catalina, Oldsmobile Super 88 Holiday and Cadillac Eldorado Seville.
My Dad drove a 58 Special sedan for his first car during high school. It had a 3 speed manual on the column.
Love the 1958 G.M vehicles, especially the Cadillacs.

I once owned a 1958 Buick Limited.Was the only year Limited was built.
Buick had a limited back in the 30’s.
Most of what he promoted completely changed for the all new 59 Buick....
58s were the third straight year for decline in sales so a total overhaul was put in place for 59. Mechanically, they weren't much different than 58. It was mostly cosmetic with new model names.

I have a 58 Special, 2 door, with the centre post..only 3 000 built in this body style. I noticed when he opened the trunk, it was carpeted, no mention of the mess the gallon cans of transmission fluid will make that he'll have to transport with him, because of the leaking torqueball seal 😂😂

My dad had a 1968 LeSabre coup. Had a machanical keyless ignition with the choice of "Off" or "Lock" when you removed the key. If it was in the "Off" position' you could start the car without the key. The perfect getaway vehichle.
Speedometer had a lever you could pre-set that would buzz if you went over a specified speed.
You must mean 1958 as by 1968 Buick had the conventional 2-key system and key start. 1964 was the last year for the ignition switch that worked without the key. Only Buick and Chevrolet had that. I always liked it.
@@1940limited Chevy and Buick were always the closer "brothers" back then. compared to other GM brands: Both always had OHV engines, for years both had a torque tube (enclosed) drive shaft. Chevy's Powerglide was really a cheaper version of the Dynaflow. Despite the wide price difference (especially then) Chevy and Buick shared mechanical similarities not seen on Pontiac,Olds or Cadillac. Louis Chevrolet drove race cars for Buick in the early 20th Century furthers the bond between the two brands.
@@jamesslick4790 You're 100% correct in your observations. What I've also noticed is how many similarities there were between Buick and Packard. Packard is the only other wheel that will fit a Buick. They had hoods that opened from the side like Buick. Both had the gas pedal starter, but Packard went to key starter in 1954. Both cars used a straight 8, too, although OHV vs. flathead.
@@1940limited I don't have any personal experiences with Packards. I have heard about wheels, but didn't know that they also had the starter button under the gas pedal. Cool bit to add to my automotive trivia!

He forgot to mention the non-existent A pillars. The whole top is a crumple zone.
GM was the main Offender in Guessing where the GAS CAP is located. Look at the 1949 Caddy.
'58 Buick Special with 600 Ibs of chrome + 9-11 MPG, when petrol was cheaper.
Looks like Buick had a contest with their stylists for 1958. The one who could design a car with the most chrome wins.

The 1958 General Motors cars were downright crazy - huge, bulging, covered with all kinds of big and little chrome things and with huge fins. Sales that year were poor, partly because there was a recession, but also because a good segment of Americans were put off by vehicles like this wacky Buick - so much so that they started buying small imported cars instead. That led to the crash development of the first compact cars by the Big Three manufacturers: the Chevrolet Corvair, the Ford Falcon and the Plymouth Valiant, which were 1960 models first on the market in the fall of 1959.
The Rambler American was selling like hot cakes and challenging the imports with its compact size, good fuel economy and compact turning circle. It was one of the very few cars that increased in sales during the recession. The big three were preceded by NASH-AMC-Rambler by years in providing the American industry with a compact. Economic reasons, fuel economy issues and increasingly difficult to park or manoeuvrability were the main reasons why the big three experienced sales figure drops.
@@LeopoldoNotarianni-rk9vv The Studebaker Lark was a 1959 model and it sold extremely well; enough to keep the entire company away from bankruptcy for a few more years. Unfortunately, the next year the Big 3 compacts hit the market and trashed Studebaker's sales.
@elcapitan5680 Incorrect. There were enough import sales in 1958 and '59 for the US "Big Three" automakers to quickly introduce their own compact models for the 1960 model year, as I wrote in my original comment.

6:04 - Notice how much the point of the lower part of the wraparound windshield intrudes into the open door of the car - getting in and out often caused people to bang their knee on that unexpected impediment. This windshield design was absolutely of no real use and was just yet another late '50s gimmick

You want to find the right shiny object to hypnotize the subject.
You find it, you drive it home, you make the sale.
I think it was to make it seem that he was being thoughtful as he spoke extemporaneously. Of course, in reality he was reciting memorized lines from a script.

This is a dealer information presentation. The idea is to help the dealer sell the automobile. The automobile the dealer will be selling is the Buick automobile. The more Buick automobiles the dealer sells the more money he and the motor company will make.
These easily outsold the Chrysler & De Soto and ate the Edsel for breakfast in sales.

Buick never contemplated a push button system for the automatics. Stick was also available in the Special in 1958. The grille was in two pieces each one weighing a good 20-30 pounds.

This hideous contraption while Chrysler Corporation had the forward look. Like trying to sell a Nokia 5110 in a iPhone world. Obviously, the car was a sales desaster.
I like Buicks but this was the worse salesman ever
Top of my list for garish, fat, chrome draped embarrassment- until the '61 Plymouth came out.
It's a matter of opinion and taste. I never found the 58 Buick to be garish. Issues with 58s were more mechanical.
