    I have trained for over 30 years and I very rarely used the head gear, and now at 56, people still ask me why I don’t use head gear, and respond that my head gear is my guard, my gloves are constantly tight around my face and glued to my forehead. I almost lost my very first kickboxing amateur fight 30 years ago because of the head gear that was twisting on my head and I kept trying to adjust it and getting punched when I was doing so!

      I watched some of your videos after heading to your channel via reading your comment (Subbed too). Mad respect for how athletic/healthy you are & how hard you train at 57. That's how I want to be able to train when I'm in my 50s, which is why I'm an advocate for light sparring over heavy. I do Muay Thai & Boxing, when I'm at my Boxing gym I see too many young guys in sparring hitting heavy (the coach lets them take multiple heavy shots too). They're not thinking about 10-20 years or more from now, to me it's a waste to be able to defend yourself in your 20s - 30s but not be able to later in life because you're too damaged from bad sparring decisions. I'm selective with who I sparr & it's known I like tactical sparring so when I'm in my 50s like you one day I'm still able to train hard & defend myself.

    Same head gear. I use it most of the time just to protect my face, but I love sparring without headgear. I get caught about 3 times as often, but it's like Goku dropping his weighted gear when you take it off, because you learn to ride the shots and bait the shots you want so you can anticipate them correctly.

    There exist this types of head gear that Kudô practitioners use, it has a acrilic transparent plate in front of your face to prevent cuts and break, but the head still take the demage just like yours,I never used it, but it seems very efficient in protecting during practice

    • @alexandermilenov818
      @alexandermilenov818 3 роки тому +8

      The Kudo headgear is pretty nice. It's got the clear front that doesn't hinder your vison so much and keeps you from cuts and getting your nose smashed. It's heavy, so it also builds your neck muscles. That said, the con is your head gets twice the size. Also, you feel every hit in your chin, sooo ;) In about 5 years of Kudo, my impression is that the headgear is mostly used for exams and competition (if you've felt a Kudo glove, you'd know why). Also in harder sparring, but once you're wearing boxing gloves, the gear comes off. But that could just be my impression. Generally, it has good pros and some cons, but if you're using paperthin gloves, better have it on. Plus, it's bulky enough that, if you learn to slip punches with it, 1. You are a proud owner of a bull's neck 2. You'll be untouchable, because your head is halved without it. Of they can't touch your big head, no way are they punching it that much smaller :D

    This is very well explained. I think headgear for juniors is a good idea because it will help win over children and parents to getting involved. They stop the cuts and bruising and that is all! Some shipping companies recommend about 3 inches of bubble wrap around fragile items. This protects against shock/ g-forces. Boxing headgear does not have 3 inches of bubble wrap & the gloves are not made of 3 inches of bubble wrap either! The sturdy cardboard box helps protect against crushing.

  • @kevingray4980

    I won't disagree with your advice, but it's important to understand that equal impulse is not the same as equal damage. If you double the duration of impact, it halves the rate of acceleration, which is easier on your brain. The change in acceleration, the jerk, is also less abrupt, which makes it easier for the muscles of the neck to prevent the head from moving. Also, the material being used in the headgear will reduce the elasticity, which will actually reduce the impulse. As the head begins to move during impact, some of the energy in the fist won't transfer. All together, this is less damaging on a per-strike basis.
    On the down side, the increased duration also means there is more time for the striker to follow through and apply additional force. In effect, the acceleration remains less, just not reduced as much, and the impulse could actually increase slightly. In competition, where you follow through with the strikes, this negates some of the protective advantage of the headgear. In sparring, when you aren't going all out, you enjoy more benefit. Another factor to consider is what type of gloves are being used. The smaller the gloves, the more significant the benefit of headgear.
    Again, I'm speaking on a per-strike basis, so whether getting hit more offsets the benefit of the headgear, I don't feel qualified to say. But I will say that the AIBA study raises issues of conflict of interest. They are interested in whatever will make the sport more popular with fans, and in such cases it is easy to tailor a study to justify a decision. I would also be wary of drawing too many conclusions from that study which may not apply to sparring. For instance, while they showed an decrease of concussions, how many of those were caused by being braver, such as 'accidental' headbutts and being willing to take more hits because of better protection. These are changes to decision making, not a test of the gear itself. And how significant is the occurrence of these concussions compared to decreasing the severity of the worst knockouts, or the repetitive, sub-concussive blows from training?
    The point is, these are questions very important to the medical community, but are either completely outside the scope of that study or are purposely avoided to support a business interest.

  • @The_Void_Staring_Back
    @The_Void_Staring_Back 3 роки тому

    I'm quite surprised that you didn't touch at all on the fact that several studies have concluded concussions to actually get worse with headgear on. Not only because of the reasons you mentioned (like restricted vision and your head becoming a larger target), but also because it acts as what the researches referred to as a "reverberation cage". It can essentially increase the amount of thudding, low end bass wave type of *~boom~* that your brain experiences. On top of that, it also makes your head a considerable amount heavier, which makes in harder for your neck to support that weight and to resist against the whiplash effect when you get hit. Just some extra food for thought. Loving the content, man. New subscriber 👍

    Great video, it also makes me a happy owner of Winning gears seeing how well yours held up for 10+ years =) For technical light sparring in boxing I personally love to wear no headgear so I could experiment more with head/waist movement while not having to worry about taking bombs to the head if I made any mistakes, and of course, having full peripheral vision is always great for any reactive movements. When we decide to go a bit harder, we would then use open-faced competition style headgear at least to reduce cuts/bruises, damage from headbutts or the fear of getting our ear drums popped haha. Cheers!

      I've experienced the pros and cons. Not wearing headgear I took a kick to the head that resulted in a goose egg that would not have happened if I had been wearing protection. Wearing headgear I have taken punches to the head that I didn't see coming (hook) that snapped my head around and I felt concussed afterward from the brain being shaken, no bruising to the face or even sore. Overall I think I will continue to wear headgear.

  • @zisispethanis4271

    It also depends on your fighting style, specially in boxing. For inside fighter that will bob/weave a lot and go "under" the opponent, you often fly blind when you need to keep your chin down while looking upwards. A tall outside striker wont have the same problem for example. One of the most open light headgear, are the ones they use in TKD, but after every strike it needs readjustment. But it might be worth it for some, when light friendly parring.

    At the gym I was training at there was no restriction on whether to use headgear or not. Personally, I prefer no headgear, can see and move freely without any doubts in the back of my mind. However, the gym made changes and headgear is mandatory now. Honestly, it wasn't a big deal because I used a Winning FG-2900 headgear. It was lighter and had less padding which made it bearable compared to those bulky headgears that the other members had. If I were to choose when to put on headgear or not it would be only when I have a competition coming up to reduce swelling, bruises cut just to ensure I can maximize my training days.

Not too bulky, but not to light, just in the middle. Doesn´t have the nose protection like you said, but it gives me the protection that I need, plus I can use it on MMA and Kickboxing sparring.
    The down side is that when you spar with someone who is either a shitty partner or someone who doesn´t pull their strikes go hard because "you have head gear and don´t feel the strikes", which is not true at all!! Seeing every pro boxer ever use headgear makes me think that they are on to something, so I use it, also studies show that cuts and bruises to the face increase significantly when not using headgear, and all the data on concussions is not backed up by controlled studies, but just anecdotal, which most scientists think is because of changes in behavior, like people go harder when using headgear. So maybe the best is to have controlled sparring with headgear for boxing.

    The headgear we have currently definatelly need improvement, I'm not telling people to fght with biker helmets or riot helms, but things like acrilic visor and layered padding could be improvements...

    What are your thoughts on using an open faced headgear or even just ear protection after experiencing a ruptured eardrum? Would wrestling style ear guards be just as beneficial as open faced headgear?

    Omg 😳 this explains why I couldn’t understand how I ate a head kick in my first amateur Muay Thai fight! I never wore headgear in sparring (only 2-3 times in my entire life but that was in boxing) but my opponent forced us to wear them. I was descent at evading & blocking head kicks, but I just honestly didn’t see it coming that day…..now I understand why

    How do you feel about the Karate headgear with the plastic face covering? It seems like it would be way better for protecting your nose, but I don't see fighters using it ever so there has to be a reason beyond brain damage...

    Hi guys are there any reccomendations to any helmets that do NOT restrict vision? Most smoker fights require them but a helmet i used restricted my sight so much that i got a concussion from a kick that i didnt see.thx guys!

    I don’t like the bar or cheek protection on the headgear. I use the Top 10 style they use to use in Olympic boxing. Just my personal choice

    Weekend warrior here ✋🏻. First time I spar I thought headgear and gloves will make everything more pillowy. I was in for a rude awakening. My opponent has about 10-15kgs on me, and has hands of stone. I ate a straight, and will never forget the ringing in my ears. 😂😂

    Just got some headgear and other things that I ordered online. I got a light blue Sanabul Headgear on Amazon just a few days bacc!! I also got 12 oz boxing gloves from Venum, then combat sports international electric blue 4 oz. MMA gloves, a $60 cup and strap, M.M.A. Shorts, Boxing Shorts, RingSide Hand-Wraps, and a Mouthguard.
    I still need boxing shoes, 7 oz. Sparring Gloves, and Shin Guards. Anything else? Or should that be enough to get started at a gym.

    I don't wear headgear, I'm selective with who I sparr & only do tactical sparring so there's no reason for me to use it when I'm not being hit hard enough to cause bruising/cuts 9/10 times. I also fight more smart/defensively trying to outmaneuver/trick/trap/counter over brawling, so I'm not usually taking lots of shots. The headgear only increases chances of shots landing on me & blocks my vision more (makes gap between guard wider too). In my experience when I put on headgear, who I'm sparring (subconsciously or by ignorance) hits more & harder even if they're not wearing headgear lol. Sometimes me just putting on headgear will make them do the same & the sparring's harder. Because of this It's rare I've worn headgear & since early 2020 decided to not wear any again going forward.

    I agree with not wearing headgear all the time, awkward and hard to see. I also agree that the headgear that strictly protects the head and temples is absolutely pointless...I never understood the concept

    100%. I drew the same conclusions 30 years ago. In addition to all of the stuff you mentioned, it also makes your head heavier. When the difference between slipping a punch and getting hit is measured in milliseconds, having to move more mass is a huge deal.

    Head gear if you don't want cuts, broken nose, or fight cancelled. The blunt force trauma of punches is still going to happen with the headgear.

    I’ll always wear a full face bar head gear not to protect my head from concussion but to protect my face from cuts, bruises, black eyes and getting a broken nose I’ve got a job so I don’t think it’s very professional If I turn up to my day job with bruises, cuts and a broken nose.

    Look up "kudo daido juku" sparring/tournament, it is a form of karate that incorporates both striking & grappling like mma, and it requires a headgear with wide angle clear shield, like a lite version of astronaut helmet. 👨‍🚀👨‍🚀👨‍🚀👨‍🚀👨‍🚀. also mma glove instead of boxing glove.
