Usually in movies like this, the main guy is already Hollywood-good-looking and they make him look awkward and geeky (add glasses, fat suit, etc). I liked that this one basically used the comic relief sidekick actor as the star and you can tell DJ goes all in - despite how bad the writing is.
The wikipedia article for this movie is so weird. The plot summary STARTS with him starting a band and being at a new school. Not ANY mention of being a dork in his original school, or prison. Which is kind of the whole point of the movie. It's like writing the plot summary to The Count of Monte Cristo as "A new millionaire arrives in town and starts randomly targeting people."
Saw this one three times in the theater when I was 12. The trailers looked so funny, and I had to keep watching the movie to find out if I was missing anything.

57:45 What a coincidence that Billy mentioned Joe Roth because I was literally just watching reviews for a film called Freaked from 1993. And Joe Roth from the 80s until 1993 Joe Roth was the head of 20th Century Fox. In case you guys don’t know about the movie or about the backstory behind it. Freaked is a surreal comedy film that was co-written, co-directed, & starring Alex Winter (of Bill & Ted fame). Before this movie he had co-created a short lived sketch comedy series on MTV called The Idiot Box, which was basically Freaked before Freaked. When Freaked was pitched to Joe Roth he liked the idea and supported the film. The film was originally supposed to be a low budget horror film starring the band The Butthole Surfers. And nice that you guys mentioned Henry Rollins because he sings in the film’s soundtrack with instrumental band Blind Idiot God. Unfortunately, in either late in production or in postproduction Joe Roth was fired from 20th Century Fox & was replaced by Peter Chernin. And Chernin saw the movie and hated it so much that he cut there postproduction budget. And there were also poor test screenings after that. And because of all that the film had an extremely small theatrical release. And to this day is not available anywhere digitally. But throughout the years it’s gotten a minor cult following with UA-cam critics like RedLetterMedia, Angry Video Game Nerd, & The Nostalgia Critic talking about these movies.
