David Pianosi I grew in a very very mechanical DIY family too... My mom was little interested in anything but herself, so I spent most of my growing up with Dad, building and repairing... He has been gone for decades, but watching Mustie is like hanging out with Dad and his car guy friends almost 70 years ago..
Reminds me of being stuck in Shopper City's parking lot while dad retuned the points on an Olds V-8 with a matchbook as the .020 feeler gauge that he didn't have with.

Love what you're doing, I'm 17 and I've been watching for almost 3 years now, have learned so much from you, you inspired me to make a little money on the side from school by repairing and servicing old outboards. Started with a few dirt cheap outboards and built up to having enough money to build a small workshop. Safe to say I'm already working my dream job, by turning my hobby into a job!!!

That is a masterclass in mechanical engineering !!!!! I showed this to my son and all the lights in his brain suddenly got power in problem solving. Outstanding stuff.
Thanks to your videos, I took my niece's broken-down D120 and a rust bucket LA118, both John Deere and made one solid working machine. It took me 24 hrs of total work put in. Absolutely love the videos.
I mainly come here to watch you work on your projects,but the extra content at the end shows you have class,love the mating leopard frogs,with a smattering of green frog calls,brings tears to my eyes for when I was young I used to go to the swales behind my mothers house and listen to the frogs and sit and when the frogs suddenly went silent meant the white tail dear were here for a drink,I hale from the northern lower peninsula of Michigan,my family is gone and I live alone,thank you for bringing a song from my past,Happy Easter,God Bless You.
bearings... Can't tell you how many times I've resurrected them.. Skated a 62 mile race in Central park,(inline skating) start to finish in the rain with oiled bearings one side open on each bearing. Basically water lubricated the bearings after a few miles. Race over, skates dried off and put in a bag. 4 days later, back home in california, every wheel (10) frozen solid. Soaked them in W-D 40, then after a day, used my lathe, and spun them in a wheel one by one till they broke free. Then I soaked them again after cleaning them till no more orange came out. Used those bearings for up to 100 miles a week for a year to train in and they actually worked ok. You could hear me coming from a mile away though. :). BAck in the day "fafnirs" were the best bearings..... Like pre 1980.

It's grass cutting time here, not sure where you live but it's high. Cleaned out the carb of my Troy and it runs wonderful now. No more hauling up a hill with a non self propelled mower.. This mower is now HOSS! I use my old Bolox mower on areas that are rocky and full of nuts, stones, etc.
I bought a 214, 20+ years ago. One of the first adjustments I made to it, was was to turn the front wheels around to provide easier access to the valve stem. Never had any trouble, but always wondered why JD did that. I'm located in the country, 20 miles west of Rochester, NY. I've enjoyed your videos for several years now and always look forward to your next one !

Thank you mustie you inspired me after watching some of the free quad will it run videos. So I am 15 and asked my dad if I could pick up a toa toa 110 arc that was in my area and he said yes cause it was free and we picked it up and got it home I got to looking at it and the problem was that it just needed new wires to the coil and a new safety tether pull and once I figured that out there was spark and it fired right up. Keep up the videos.
I heard you say about oil in tires to stop leaking. A while back I heard someone say atf trans fluid I thought sure like that would work, we’ll I ran out of the high dollar stuff so I had lots of ATF and said what do I have to lose. Well I must say it works like a charm. I just had to tell you I love watching your videos spend hours and enjoy. Keep them coming. Thanks.

Mustie, on the 318, the altenator puts out 28 - 30 volts AC. It goes into the rectifier/regulator, and comes out as around 13.8 volts DC. The yellow charge light measures voltage, not amps. It comes on whrn battety voltage is less than 12.7 vdc Note: Mine had a worn wire, behind the front pulley, where it leads to the starter. This bled voltage off, which caused constant charging, and boiling the battery. The cost of reg/rectifier is $90 from deere, but can be bought, new for around $20, aftermarket. Mine was the exact same Mallory, as the deere was. An oversize snow blower sprocket is available, to make auger turn faster........
Another fine show of rust be us! A good example of fix it instead of throwing it away. No finer entertainment on the planet. Wish you were on every day and had your own network. % rusty thumbs up!
So I wake up this morning, Lord of my castle. I see the notification of a Mustie1 and head to the family room to enjoy my Mustie1 fix. I walk in an my wife is sitting on the couch , she smiles as I walk in and says " First you grout the tiles in the bathroom and THEN you can watch Mustie1" It's always nice to be reminded, who is really the boss. It's worth the wait, I enjoy watching you wrench on stuff. If I'm working in the garage, I will put you on the Tv and it keeps me motivated to keep going or figure out a solution. I love your small engine videos. I'm retired and do some junk mower work myself. But with a small shop and somewhat limited equipment I do what I can. That's why I watch you, you have a knack of fixing problems with what you have around. Another channel I love is "Taryl Fixes All." He's mostly just lawn stuff but is very educational and funny. Seeing that he's in New England are I'm betting Mustie's family came over on the Mayflower. They were the ones down on the lower deck fixing leaks and making sure the it stayed afloat.
on those bearings i drill and install a grease zerk and drill a hole in the spacer then remove the inner seal on the bearings, keep greased and will last 4 times longer. same on spindles if grease-able remove inner bearing seals.
I have the exact mower. A friend sold it to me for 100 bucks. Beware old seats! One day I threw it into forward gear and the seat ripped right off-I tumbled off the back like a bouncing panda bear. Gave my back an unwanted adjustment...mower kept going and crashed into the weeds. Got a replacement at Princess Auto...For US people: Harbour Freight? Or TSC? would probably have something-Generic seat works fine. Now I'm going to have to restore mine! Your 160 looks great.
Some times when Mustie picks one of these free bees up and figures out it was just something simple I wonder how the guy feels that threw it out . The guy that threw this thing out has to be feeling pretty good about now. He got his moneys worth from this mower.
This is way more than a carb fix or sparkplug or something simple. But with the condition I want a complete sanding of the parts and rust prevention. Please do it right. Do it 100% or just don't do it. I'm that way compete 100% or not at all.
kevin faulkner Actually, at full throttle you should see about 28 -30 VAC. The regulator rectifier will cut that by half to about 14-15 VDC. Charging voltage should always be higher than resting battery voltage. Resting voltage on a fully charged battery in good condition should be about 13.8 V.
I had a 14horse John Deere like that one as my first mower dad put me to work and oneday it fell off the truck I actually let out a tear it was such a sad day, that’s how you know your a gear head! Thanks for showing me another good ol John deer
When driving out a bearing, I use a large socket to fit the hub of the pulley positioned in the throat of the vise and drive against the socket to prevent damaging the pulley, but old bearing races work too!
You will not find a better tractor than that 318 , ran one for 20 yrs. Plowing snow for the school , they retired it and it set for about 7 yrs. . I finally talked them out of it as I had a friend that was in his 80's that needed one. I pulled up & jump started it and it fired the second revolution !!!! The old guy wouldn't part with it , he loves it !!
I made a paint mixer for Testors model paint a few yrs ago out of a electric knife, a pill bottle with foam top & bottom, put the paint jar in the pill bottle put the lid on and fire it up. I have model paint that is the better part of 30yrs old that is good. I also put BB's in my paint jars so they mix well & now with my homemade mixer they really mix well !
I found a nice yellow seat for Deere mowers on Northern tools for around $80. It don't say Deere but who cares? Gotta get a black one for my Craftsman.
For repairing that hole in the deck try placing a thin piece of cardboard underneath and trace the shape of the hole onto the cardboard with a pencil. Then cut along the trace line with a knife or scissor and you have an exact pattern of the hole to trace onto the sheet metal. Just a thought. Enjoyed the video.
I recently did some starter work on my snowblower tractor and did a quick paint and detail on it , no takers . So it will fall victim of making myself a mini loader / forklift soon . Love the reciprocating saw paint shaker . I added mine to a shaker screen for soil , it worked well .

Cannot BELIEVE a all the stuff he has to pick through when he needs something - just amazing. Also really like that he explains stuff and takes the time to show us how things work. Time and again I see fascinating bits in these videos as a result.
Way back in the early 70's, there was an old sign, framed and hanging close to the card-punch clock, at the shop I used to work at, that said, "Why is there never enough time to do something right...but always enough time to do it over !?" It's your job to do it right the first time! In other words, don't half-A$$ the work!
Just started watching your channel about 1 month ago in that time with your information on this channel I have rebuilt the carb on my craftsman T1400 and got it running and mowing my yard and took the Murray 46 inch cut and did a valve adjustment and got the thing to fire off then rebuilt the carb on it as well as changed 3 of the tires on it now gonna take the deck off and use as my yard tractor to pull the cart and do clean up thanks for all the great info I had never worked on a small engine before other than air filter and oil change keep up the great work.
I had a similar issue with spindle bearings. They had grease fittings and sealed bearings. Took out the inner seals and put in new fittings. Been good to go for almost 4 seasons.
I could only figure out the grease is to keep the inner spindle from rusting as it served no purpose to grease them other than to see grease come out where the blades were bolted to. Basically wasting grease.
the grease pumped into a spindle with sealed bearings could work as a heat sink. The spindles do get warm if not hot while mowing for any length of time.
Hey mustie if you use car wax and wax the hood it come out really shiny just don’t get it on any of the black plastic It really works great on those fiberglass John Deere hoods
It looks like it, doesn't it? but he has it right, at least it's the same place as ours comes out. The other opening is for the petcock, and it's fiddly enough to turn without having wires to foul up your fingers.
I actually revived a seazed ballbearing in the boogie of my snowmobile once, a sealed ballbearing. Smal screwdriver to pull the plastic lid of and then alot of wd40 and wirebrush action, filled it with grease and bob's your uncle.
@Beard 79: They make an injector needle that snaps in place of a zerk in a regular grease gun. Let's you grease right past that seal. I got one so I can grease the squeaking bearing in a bread maker.

Yes, the same here. I seen a 20 year old lawn tractor with a blown engine on Craigslist and they want $100.00 dollars for it. I guess it is because people watch the American Pickers TV show and think everything is worth a lot of money.

I’ve wrapped a little Teflon tape around the threads and then filled the knob with JB weld. When it hardens you can unscrew it and the threads remain. Easy peasy.

But... entirely not necessary. :) a recent study showed that most any paint can is actually thoroughly mixed enough in 4-5 shakes.

Valve stems to the inside is common. Garden tractors take a beating in the field and this keeps the stems in the rim!
I'll be more impressed when you strap a gallon of paint to the recip saw to mix that!!

i wonder if that trick would work with an inverted DA sander , then tape your gallon of paint to it

I love your small engine videos. I'm retired and do some junk mower work myself. But with a small shop and somewhat limited equipment I do what I can. That's why I watch you, you have a knack of fixing problems with what you have around.

on those bearings i drill and install a grease zerk and drill a hole in the spacer then remove the inner seal on the bearings, keep greased and will last 4 times longer. same on spindles if grease-able remove inner bearing seals.
The spindles made me cry and them buy new ones for mine. No grease fittings but they were cheaper than new Deere ones.
I have the exact mower. A friend sold it to me for 100 bucks. Beware old seats! One day I threw it into forward gear and the seat ripped right off-I tumbled off the back like a bouncing panda bear. Gave my back an unwanted adjustment...mower kept going and crashed into the weeds. Got a replacement at Princess Auto...For US people: Harbour Freight? Or TSC? would probably have something-Generic seat works fine. Now I'm going to have to restore mine! Your 160 looks great.

I don’t have access to a welder so I fixed my mower deck with bondo. Worked great for about 2 years.
Some times when Mustie picks one of these free bees up and figures out it was just something simple I wonder how the guy feels that threw it out . The guy that threw this thing out has to be feeling pretty good about now. He got his moneys worth from this mower.

This is way more than a carb fix or sparkplug or something simple. But with the condition I want a complete sanding of the parts and rust prevention. Please do it right. Do it 100% or just don't do it. I'm that way compete 100% or not at all.

On the 318, test the two wires going to the voltage regulator with an AC meter. Should be 20 to 30 volts AC If it does the regulator may be bad.
kevin faulkner Actually, at full throttle you should see about 28 -30 VAC. The regulator rectifier will cut that by half to about 14-15 VDC. Charging voltage should always be higher than resting battery voltage. Resting voltage on a fully charged battery in good condition should be about 13.8 V.

Don't forget to put some 00 grease mixed with regular grease in the transmission, dry grease is what killed mine. (exact same mower)
When you have to tell him how to do it... just say , I have no control over this but either be gentle or be . Just be .
When driving out a bearing, I use a large socket to fit the hub of the pulley positioned in the throat of the vise and drive against the socket to prevent damaging the pulley, but old bearing races work too!

You will not find a better tractor than that 318 , ran one for 20 yrs. Plowing snow for the school , they retired it and it set for about 7 yrs. . I finally talked them out of it as I had a friend that was in his 80's that needed one. I pulled up & jump started it and it fired the second revolution !!!! The old guy wouldn't part with it , he loves it !!

I made a paint mixer for Testors model paint a few yrs ago out of a electric knife, a pill bottle with foam top & bottom, put the paint jar in the pill bottle put the lid on and fire it up. I have model paint that is the better part of 30yrs old that is good. I also put BB's in my paint jars so they mix well & now with my homemade mixer they really mix well !
Thoes stupid seat cost way too much. My zero turn had two small cracks in seat new was 538 dollars. Gorilla tape 8 bucks. Lol
That's just ridiculous opportunism and ripping off (existing) customers! Outrageous. I'd be pulling out the gorilla tape (gaff tape) too!!
I found a nice yellow seat for Deere mowers on Northern tools for around $80. It don't say Deere but who cares? Gotta get a black one for my Craftsman.

For repairing that hole in the deck try placing a thin piece of cardboard underneath and trace the shape of the hole onto the cardboard with a pencil. Then cut along the trace line with a knife or scissor and you have an exact pattern of the hole to trace onto the sheet metal.

I recently did some starter work on my snowblower tractor and did a quick paint and detail on it , no takers . So it will fall victim of making myself a mini loader / forklift soon . Love the reciprocating saw paint shaker . I added mine to a shaker screen for soil , it worked well .

Cannot BELIEVE a all the stuff he has to pick through when he needs something - just amazing. Also really like that he explains stuff and takes the time to show us how things work. Time and again I see fascinating bits in these videos as a result.
I once heard a coworker say about our employer, "We never have time to do it right but we always seem to have time to do it over" Meaning right.
Way back in the early 70's, there was an old sign, framed and hanging close to the card-punch clock, at the shop I used to work at, that said, "Why is there never enough time to do something right...but always enough time to do it over !?" It's your job to do it right the first time! In other words, don't half-A$$ the work!
Just started watching your channel about 1 month ago in that time with your information on this channel I have rebuilt the carb on my craftsman T1400 and got it running and mowing my yard and took the Murray 46 inch cut and did a valve adjustment and got the thing to fire off then rebuilt the carb on it as well as changed 3 of the tires on it now gonna take the deck off and use as my yard tractor to pull the cart and do clean up thanks for all the great info I had never worked on a small engine before other than air filter and oil change keep up the great work.
I had a similar issue with spindle bearings. They had grease fittings and sealed bearings. Took out the inner seals and put in new fittings. Been good to go for almost 4 seasons.
Engineered failure.
I could only figure out the grease is to keep the inner spindle from rusting as it served no purpose to grease them other than to see grease come out where the blades were bolted to. Basically wasting grease.
I had a noisy spindle on a Deere John L130, took it apart to replace bearing(s) and found the OEM sealed bearings. Now I just don't grease them.
the grease pumped into a spindle with sealed bearings could work as a heat sink. The spindles do get warm if not hot while mowing for any length of time.

yes. So it doesnt yank on it when the seat is lifted.

Likely that connection will be jumpered and not connected to the seat.
It looks like it, doesn't it? but he has it right, at least it's the same place as ours comes out. The other opening is for the petcock, and it's fiddly enough to turn without having wires to foul up your fingers.

I actually revived a seazed ballbearing in the boogie of my snowmobile once, a sealed ballbearing. Smal screwdriver to pull the plastic lid of and then alot of wd40 and wirebrush action, filled it with grease and bob's your uncle.
And no i dont' like the oversized sheetmetal, make it fit the hole and weld it, grind the welds down and it Will look factree! Vgg gang!
@Beard 79: They make an injector needle that snaps in place of a zerk in a regular grease gun. Let's you grease right past that seal. I got one so I can grease the squeaking bearing in a bread maker.

Yes, the same here. I seen a 20 year old lawn tractor with a blown engine on Craigslist and they want $100.00 dollars for it. I guess it is because people watch the American Pickers TV show and think everything is worth a lot of money.

I’ve wrapped a little Teflon tape around the threads and then filled the knob with JB weld. When it hardens you can unscrew it and the threads remain. Easy peasy.
I've seen a lot of electrical tape used over the threads of the shaft.

I am gonna use this on a wallowed out keyway by covering the key and JB weld on the keyway
