@@kassygendron3022 Well most ASL interpreters are hearing and this one isn't 100% deaf. But as far as your question about how they can stay the beat/know the beat - for someone who is profoundly or completely deaf, they can usually feel it in their feet. She can't interpret on the spot because she's deaf herself. She needs to memorize the track set, the beat and everything beforehand. Most interpreters you see on TV are hearing people translating what they hear to sign language. What Justina did is a performance on its own
@@FeliciaKrismanta I’m not sure I follow. What do you mean by “on the spot” - the whole performance (including her own, as she says here: ua-cam.com/video/BlTsBxu8KiQ/v-deo.html ) was rehearsed down to the T, so why would that prevent her from being featured live? As a person who can hear, and enjoys music on a daily basis, just looking at this video without any sound conveys so much to the point where I can imagine the music in my head (yes, I'm a fan of Riri and am familiar with most of her songs) but even without that, her body language, rhythm and movements, her whole body emits music. Really, the terms are D/deaf and Hard of Hearing. Often terms we think we're trying not to be offensive with can be pretty offensive. For example disabled people like the term disabled people not handicapped. Not upset just spreading some understanding 😊
I was actually thinking that audibly challenged was the better “new way” of describing it but so much changes so quickly it’s hard to keep up. I’ve always used handicapped tho. A friend of mine in high school (I’m in my 40’s now) would correct anyone (teachers included) if they said the r- word or anything outside of handicapped.
I'm always confused and AMAZED by how deaf people are able to feel, interpret, convey music. Especially the beats and the energy of the song. Like it's really beautiful and miraculous. I loved every second of this ❤️
Facial expressions and energy are really important in sign language. People don't just talk with their hands, they emote with their eyes, mouth and whole body to add emphasis, just like we raise and lower pitch in spoken language. Rolling your eyes, shrugging shoulders, grinning slyly, these add tone and context to the facts being conveyed. She really nailed it!
She's legally defined as deaf, but she can hear a little. She knows all of Rihanna's songs. She was given the music set list like 2-3 days before the Superbowl, so she had time to practice her dance moves. I saw her in an interview. She states she wanted those watching her to feel the music.
Watching her makes me wanna cry. I don’t even know her and I’m so freaking proud of her and happy that she’s getting recognized. She has such a bright and infectious energy about her, not to mention how beautiful she is. Can’t wait to see more stunning performances from her.

She really popped off on Pour It Up and slayed the entire performance. Even before knowing she wanted the deaf community to feel everything that was what I noticed. She would imitate going across the Tom’s on a drum kit and accentuated every bass kick and all the rhythmic Melodie’s perfectly matched the energy of the songs. Really cool to see something I’d love to do since that’ll be my main area of study in grad school (:

She and a friend of hers interpreted for an event we held and her friend was the one who did the hip hop performers and the girl had energy!
Yeah when I was doing stuff in school, obviously just taking a year or two of ASL we're not going to be nearly at a professional interpreters level no matter what but there were definitely songs that we were drawn to because they were easier and they're definitely not like what's in this video!
Can I ask you a question?? I am so intrigued by these amazing performances!! How do they know the beat and stay on beat so well?? And then when the song changes, they know exactly when. And they know to change the beat. How do they do that?!?! I am dying to know! It's so impressive!!!
@@kassygendron3022 Well most ASL interpreters are hearing and this one isn't 100% deaf. She is legally deaf because she is significantly hard of hearing so I'm guessing this interpreter has some kind of hearing aids. She did an interview on "CBS Morning" or whatever it's called and she said she was very familiar with all the songs already but she was given a set list about a week in advance. So what she did was memorize how to sign and then she planned how she was going to move to each song. I'm guessing she knew how the music was going to sound too with the remix versions and stuff because Rude Boy was insane! But as far as your question about how they can stay the beat/know the beat - for someone who is profoundly or completely deaf, they can usually feel it in their feet. I've seen deaf musicians/singers on talent shows and they come on stage barefoot or just in socks. It's for that reason. I have partial hearing loss myself and I can tell you I can feel sound sometimes better than I can hear it on a bad day.
@@victorialopez9717 wow!! Thank you so much for this. This is exactly what I wanted to know! That is all so awesome! And it is so fun to watch! Thanks so very much for informing me!!!

I’m not deaf but this is the best song signing I’ve seen. It’s almost as though she’s the halftime performer instead of Rihanna.
She was for me. ♥️
didn't even see the full version of the performance but i'll gladly watch this over and over again, she did so good! ❤
I am a beginner when it comes to sign language and it is not easy to understand at times. I enjoyed every second of her interpretation of the halftime performance. Smiling from ear to ear ❤
She was far better than Rihanna
Yeap I'm normal... But I love herr energy
As a hard of hearing person without access to sign laguage growing up this is so emotional to watch. Once "All the Lights" came on I was crying. Then "Run this Town." That hit me so deep in the feels. I was in middle school when that song came out imagining a world with more expressions like this. Deaf culture is getting recognition. Thank you Justina for breaking bariers! I aspire to work together.
Your comment made me have to hold back my tears. I just felt you!
Riri's performance while being pregnant, those talented backup dancers and this amazing interpretor made this halftime show the greatest super bowl halftime show ever. Well done team super bowl
idk abt the best but it was very well done
Lol no
She can't beat Michael Jackson and Lady Gaga performances
Definitely not the best IMO but it was a good performance. I honestly think Prince's halftime show was the best Superbowl performance. If you haven't seen it I'm pretty sure you can find it on UA-cam.
@@hippo440 I'm tired of there always being a scandal because something outrageous happened in the show. This was great and refreshing to see it all go right. Rihanna doesn't have to fake a scandal, she trusted her performance
Coldplay and Lady Gagas are better. But this one is good too
I don't know why, but this performance from her brought me to tears. The passion is incredible 🙌🏾 although I'm not deaf I FELT IT.

i remember like 8 years ago there was another interpreter who was this level of skill. she did the ASL for eminems RAP GOD and she still somehow managed to keep all the beats in too. theres like only a handful of interpreters of this skill level and they are UNMATCHED. i love watching the ASL performers at all concerts

She needs a Grammy too! She was phenomenal and she was really into it. I hope she gets invited back to the Super Bowl to do sign language again.

She felt that deep in her soul. She was so passionate about it, she gave me goosebumps. Absolutely phenomenal. And I am talking about the signing.
I did not realize the artistry involved. Until I saw her!!!! 👌
Please hire her for every halftime show. I'm not a fan of football but I'll watch her performance
This is a video clip that when I turn off the audio, I still want to dance.
Rihanna is great, she is fantastic too! Good job.
She is gonna be booked solid for the rest of the year for all types of events. Great job Justina. You mesmerizing talent draws everyone's attention. ❤️❤️
I doubt booked for the rest of the year. Because there are other interpreters that does the same as her. more opportunities yes, plus she’s in school to become a nurse.
She's going to be booked for a good decade. Like this isn't the last we see of her!
I've seen her do other concerts, she is great

@@taylord7261 shove your negativity! You didnt have to say anything at all and yes shes probably already booked!
Watching her perform made me wish she was featured on the regular telecast so everyone got the chance to appreciate her performance. Also, it made me grateful to have the ability to hear music. Imagine if someday all deaf people gained the ability to hear.
I don't think they could've had her on the field doing this because she would've outshined RiRi and the dancers with her talent!! She's the diamond!
She can't interpret on the spot because she's deaf herself. She needs to memorize the track set, the beat and everything beforehand. Most interpreters you see on TV are hearing people translating what they hear to sign language. What Justina did is a performance on its own
Most deaf people quite like being deaf, what they dislike is how the world is so bent on making it harder for them
@@FeliciaKrismanta I’m not sure I follow. What do you mean by “on the spot” - the whole performance (including her own, as she says here: ua-cam.com/video/BlTsBxu8KiQ/v-deo.html ) was rehearsed down to the T, so why would that prevent her from being featured live? In some ways, isn’t it at some level a rehearsed performance, just like everyone who was featured on the telecast?
Right!
"Justina Miles has a remarkable ability to communicate and connect with the audience on a level that transcends words. Her interpretation isn't just about sign language; it's about the energy, the dance, the radiant vibrations she brings to each performance. It's as if she speaks to our hearts and souls without uttering a single word. Her presence is a powerful testament to the universal language of love and joy. Thank you, Justina, for sharing your extraordinary talent and for touching us so deeply with your artistry. 🌟🎶"
She is the mother I never had, she is the sister everybody would want. She is the friend that everybody deserves. I don't know a better person.

😭😭😭😭
You know her personally?😐
Oprahhhh 💀💀💀💀
How you received over 200 likes for this comment is mind blowing. Especially since it makes absolutely NO SENSE. She's like 20 years old, so how could she be the mother you never had? And the rest of your comment, like you know her personally, which more than likely you don't. SMDH, people need to stop liking nonsense.
It's so cool how she uses her motions to convey the beats in the music during breaks in singing. Interpreting music seems so hard because of the emotions conveyed and the music itself but she absolutely nailed all of it.
This woman is a fucking queen.
I don't know how they found her, but l am glad they did. She is phenomenal!!! There may be a new career, after she graduates from college! She gave the world a performance!!!! And a fantastic one indeed!!!!

She's jamming!!! So much emotion and mimics RiRis vib really good. This interpreter is Amazing and extremely good.
Well she should be since she signs daily.

So the interpreter did so well ❤

She made us feel the songs in a different way
As a person who can hear, and enjoys music on a daily basis, just looking at this video without any sound conveys so much to the point where I can imagine the music in my head (yes, I'm a fan of Riri and am familiar with most of her songs) but even without that, her body language, rhythm and movements, her whole body emits music.
I can't understand any of the signs, but by lip-reading I can recognize the songs, and the signs are often self-explanatory, just wow... Mad respect for her. 👏👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it!

Ahh geez I’m crying now too ❤
Really, the terms are D/deaf and Hard of Hearing.
There is, I believe, no one that could have done this better than this woman she’s so amazing
I'm always confused and AMAZED by how deaf people are able to feel, interpret, convey music. Especially the beats and the energy of the song. Like it's really beautiful and miraculous. I loved every second of this ❤️
She’s actually deaf too, not fully deaf tho obviously. Most aren’t fully deaf either!

Finally someone uploaded the her whole performance. I’m completely impressed 🎉 shoutout to her 🎉🎉🎉🎉

She's legally defined as deaf, but she can hear a little. She knows all of Rihanna's songs. She was given the music set list like 2-3 days before the Superbowl, so she had time to practice her dance moves. I saw her in an interview. She states she wanted those watching her to feel the music.

She gave an amazing performance and didn't show a loss of energy once! Just incredible.
She is so mesmerizing! I’m not hearing impaired but could watch her all day. You can see the emotion of each song through her and she does it so beautifully
