I am not from that area but I heard that those villagers do not eat eels for religious reasons so they resort to feeding them instead. Other Solomon Islanders do eat eels but not these villagers. Their presence in the water keeps the water clean and is an attraction to visitors.

What happens if the boat sinks? There seems to be no safety vests on, everyone would drown.
Don't worry too much,friend..the trip was mostly in-lagoon,and everyone on that boat has most likely been able to swim since they were 3yrs old..
Its in the lagoon and everybody can swim.
