- In collaboration with Moog Music, the Will Gregory Moog Ensemble presents “Archimedes Screw,” a live performance from 11 musicians-with each of the 10 keyboardists using their own Model D to add layers of sound to the composition as it builds.
From the onset of the video, the stage is set: a mix of vintage and modern Minimoogs line the chancel of The Mount Without, a historic chapel in Bristol, UK. The acoustics of the space provide a warm depth to the sound of Minimoogs produced from every era they have been manufactured.
Utilizing MIDI integration for the 2016 and 2022 reissues, and MIDI-to-CV converters for the vintage units involved in this performance, the Moog Ensemble highlights the modern features alongside the classic sound. According to the group’s musical director and composer, Will Gregory, the instrument’s enhancements expand Model D’s realm of sonic possibility.
“The MIDI aspect of these instruments enables us to open polyrhythmic possibilities between the 10 parts that would be beyond humans to reproduce otherwise. Our hands become free for sound sculpting as we perform by manipulating the filter, resonance, modulation, and envelope controls in pairs. Both these aspects are very important to how I see the Moog Ensemble breaking new ground in live performance and simultaneously giving a more expressive and warm creation.”
“Archimedes Screw” demonstrates Model D’s timeless sound, playability, and relevance as a powerful musical tool for live performance. The Moog Ensemble manifesto, Gregory shares, is very much about live performance as a living breathing unit of musicians listening and responding together.
Will Gregory discusses his connection with the instrument and shares more details on how the ensemble composed this piece from a technical perspective on Moog’s website (moogmusic.com).
Goldfrapp’s Will Gregory is one of the UK’s leading advocates of using synthesizers and electronic instruments to create new sounds and reinvent old ones. Leading and performing with the Moog Ensemble since 2005, Gregory and its rotating contributors-which includes Adrian Utley of Portishead-perform a mixture of specially composed music, transcriptions of classical works, and their own versions of music from popular culture and film scores. “Archimedes Screw” will be featured on the debut Will Gregory Moog Ensemble album coming out via Mute Records in 2023.

Moog orchestras should be ubiquitous after 52 years! Performing in an ensemble like this would be a dream come true. It's a priveledge to see this, fantastic work.
Right?!
Absolutely! I would definitely like to see a lot more of this kind of approach, with larger numbers of performers onstage and less programming.
Wow - what a performance!
🙌🏻
Thanks!
Saw this at the Saffron Hall last night, having previously seen the ensemble in London in London LSO St Luke’s in 2018. Just brilliant to watch these master musicians put these wonderful synths through their paces, & that looks very much like the same Heather on Percussion as was supporting last night with the Britten Sinfonia. Well done all. Superb.
this is so beautiful .....very touching. thank you
Brilliant! And kudos to you for keeping all those beasties in tune for five minutes. My 1974 model stays in tune for about three tops.
those look like reissues
Just when you think that you've seen everything and heard everything, this comes along and simply delivers something original and new. I bought my first Moog, a MicroMoog and thought I'd arrived. That sound, that machine. It was all I could afford in 1977. The Mini (model D) was way out of my financial league. I still have my Micro, and it has undergone one modification, and that is for a connection to trigger bass pedals. There is a switch on the dash to alternate it between the synths own keyboard, and the bass pedals. But in 1987 I was offered a Model D from a pal who needed some lolly and quick. He wanted £300. By the time he's said "quid" I'd traveled 70 miles to his house via the bank and was at his front door.
The two Moogs are my babies/children. The MiniMoog has been gigged and never been too faulty. Sure it goes out of tune and that is part of the fun.
I want to see more and more of this ensemble. More recordings and gigs please. This is as revolutionary as the first time I saw Jan Hammer playing his MiniMoog with the Mahavishnu Orchestra in 1972.
What can I say....perfect. Had to watch it twice.
Only twice?
Just watched your MS-50 video. What a great piece of kit and a great video as usual.
pfft. I'm on play number 5 at the moment. Bookmarking for replay. Let's keep it going.
I can only imagine what this must sound like live! Incredible...
You would pass out and wake up in another world
This is beautiful, wow
We the people demand more mini moog videos!!!
Thanks for putting the Model D back into production!
Next: moogerfoogers
Why the fudge does this only have 49k views so far? This is an incredible piece.
😊
Love Moog... Love Will... Love the ensemble... Love this performance... really no words to describe it.
Great stuff. Love Will Gregory. He’s dome some magnificent work with Goldfrapp and arrangements for Florence + The Machine.
best thing I've seen/heard all week!
Lovely 🎵
I thought I saw Adrian Utley in the group, and the end credits affirmed it. Looking forward to the album next year on one of my favourite labels, Mute.
How awesome is this. The endless possibilities these beautiful machines offer us are in full display. Beautiful work!
loving this, reminds me of the ondes martenot ensembles, these very short plopping sound are very similar to the percutés on the Martenot. Great piece, great video.
Moog Magic! Thank you!! I only have the sub 37.. Greetings to ms. Goldfrapp
Amazing ensemble sounds like an orchestra but from other world.....I love minimoog
We need a 'making of' video to go with the performance of the 10 voice minimoog.
This performance was really great and unusual. 10 Mini Moog synths in unison! I'm pretty much speechless.
This sounds like Mother Mallard circa 1970-74, very tuneful, complex and beautiful.
From an old Moog fan..
Fantastic!!
Sounds very David Vorhaus, of White Noise fame..
The most Minimoog's in one room since Rick Wakeman's late-70's keyboard rigs.
This is so ridiculously good. Album please!!!!
HEY. Can you guys make a vinyl LP of the Will Gregory Moog Ensemble?! It's ANALOG. We all want it. You could use it to raise funds for the Bob Moog Foundation and the world will be a better place. NEED THIS ON VINYL PLEASE THANK YOU I LOVE YOU
Now let's see the younger generation who can't afford a Minimoog do an Ensemble with he SUB 37 should be just as good!.
Maravilloso ver a tanto genio reunidos gracias saludos desde México 🇲🇽❤️!! Moog forever
Amazing work. This is a dream come true
Tangerine Dream vibes, love it🚀
Dear merciless Marketing folks at Moog Music. Saw the reissue. Lost my mind. Had to be tied up away from my credit cards. Ok, I'm fine. It has passed. Maybe UA-cam is safe for me again. And then the sobbing began at 0:46. I aspire to join this chorus - badly. Oh and now LIVE build??!
Thanks a lot for the Frequency Dream 🙏🌞🙏
absolutely fantastic
So rad! Amazing how alive this sounds.
Ha what an amazing vibe! What better way to herald the return of the Minimoog!
Amazing performance. I also love at 4:31 it sounds like ring modulation.
Will Gregory brilliant tech/keyboardist This guys great
It's like a drum circle for hippies who aren't afraid of technology.
Literally everything about this. Eddie Parker, tho... 🔥 Please make more with this ensemble!
This is so musically expressive! The composition is awesome, it's performed with taste and feel… Bravo!
Bloody cool! Owner of a vintage Minimoog Model D.
This channel hosts some of the best new music anywhere.
I'm trying to picture how a conductor / composer would even begin to write out each piece to each member. How would you signify each turn of the oscillators, the cutoff filter, the changes in envelope positioning etc. To have a vision of the roles each model D would have and timing them to form a single polyphonic effect before even presenting the final draft to the ensemble... where would one even begin? If only the classical musicians of hundreds of years ago were to see and hear this today, or had moogs been in existance in their day
I think there must be an Outline idea, root key, midi sync, maybe division of who occupies what frequencies, arpeggios...This was quite unique
Beautiful stuff... especially impressive since it seems like all of the LFOs were tuned to sync by ear. Wow!
the newer re-issues of the model d have processors and some digital control over things like tuning and MIDI, so they dont drift. they probably still have to warm up for a bit to really settle down into steady-state. these are definitely not vintage models. moog has re-issued the model d at least twice now.
Man. This is SOMETHING ELSE!
Awesome, another opportunity to score a legendary piece of history! 👍
Love it!
Wow amazing 🤩
Amazing! Thank you for this! I really hope there will be much much more.
That is glorious. Bravo to all involved.
Bravo Maestros, I’ll definitely be keeping an ear out for the Mute release.

Extremely cool. Great piece and performance...in a wonderful space.
Whew 10 moogs! Talented crew! Vintage synth fans I kindly need your input, I found an alternative called the "E-Pro Mini Synth" made in Netherlands on reverb. Does anyone know of any reviews on this?
Absolutely sublime

Beautiful moogery
Incredible.
Amazing, awesome performance & sounds.
Great!
Few suggest the fundamentals of synthesis quite like Model D, decades later still shaping cultural artistry.
fantastic
Would have loved to blast the party with my TB303 through a Distortion plus pedal.
Very Awesome! Would be cool to see them performa and use DFAM for percussion :)
I kinda like the current rhythm person.
Just Amazing!
Can't Wait!

Outstanding!
How many others have done this? My dad took me to see Gershon Kingsley's 1st Moog Quartet. They had a Minimoog for a 5th.

MAGNIFICENT!
Just amazing
I am crying right now 😭
FANTASTIC!
That was rather brilliant!
Wonderful! How did you tune them all? Must have been a chore.
