  • Recently, John R. Watson reconstructed George Washington's original harpsichord. The original harpsichord was on display at Mount Vernon but was transferred to Colonial Williamsburg and put on display in the museum. The finished re-construction will be a fully functioning harpsichord and will be on display in George Washington's mansion.
There were 2 objectives for this re-construction: To make a thorough examination of the 1793 original harpsichord producing comprehensive drawings and notes about its design and evidence of construction methods. And the second objective being to make a working replica of the instrument.
Enjoy this behind the scenes video of a rare and beautiful instrument being re-created!

How many celebrations, how many notables and how many events did the original play a part in, if it could speak ? Reconstructing it is in itself a revelation into the limitless capacity of man to shape his world.

The harpsichord is my absolute favorite instrument. When I was a small child the first time I heard it I called it the "skeletal piano." It makes me sad, today, that many people consider the piano the replacement of the harpsichord, when in reality they are such distinct and unique instruments to one another and each deserves its own place. Yes, the harpsichord had some limitations that the piano doesn't have, but it is a beautiful instrument nonetheless.

I am a flutist. I was so excited when I was I. Graduate school and I could perform Baroque pieces with a harpsichord continuo.

The original is in great condition! We recreated it so that we could have a working harpsichord in the mansion.
