"If you need assistance staying in a lane, why do you have a license?"
-Farah, 2021
In countries like ours, where you have months on end of sun not coming up at all, and long drives on unlit highways, I totally get why lane keep assist exists. People do fall asleep while driving, even though the standard of driving around here is pretty high and to pass your driving test you need a year of practice, learn how to correct a slide etc.
That being said, things like the vibrating steering wheel (earlier BMW's) or a vibrating seat (Citroën) are far superior to these modern systems that "steer for you". I've had multiple occasions where these modern systems could've caused me to crash, if the road was slippery or icy. For example me going for an overtake and the car aggressively and suddenly jerking the wheel like "no you're not".
@@rishavroy3756 Yep. I guess we're talking "lane departure warnings" rather than lane keep assists.
@@ArbitraryFilmings I live in DC I know what traffic is like lol. I've commuted in a 97' M3 with a manual transmission and no AC without wishing I needed lane keep or adaptive cruise. Either way my current daily does have adaptive cruise and it is definitely nice on long road trips which is the only time I really use it lol
@@FinnishCarGuys There was a guy doing a cannonball and lane assist was making his driving much more dangerous, I would ban that crap. I'm surprised it's allowed here, considering how the nanny states of EU like to ban things for stupid reasons.
"This was the ultimate driving machine like 10 years ago, now it's like the ultimate machine for people that would rather do basically anything besides drive" sums up BMW's course so accurately
No. It sums up how Internet turned people into winning b*ches. BMW doesn’t manufacture go carts, they make luxury sport saloons and SUVs like they always did. They always had new tech features other than driving. Actually, they had more differentiation over cheaper cars in terms of tech features back in 90s. This is the best compact coupe BMW ever made.
True, although don't you think the same can be said about many cars nowadays? Less feel, too large, too heavy, massive grilles, too much automation/tech, worse sound, etc..... seems to be happening to a lot of cars these days.
@@Gokhanaj no, BMW used to make much more driver oriented cars, like E30/E36/E46, E28-E60, even E38 7 series was praised for being surprisingly driver oriented for a luxury car, M1 and 1M, and current M2 show that BMW can make a good driver's car, it's just more profit to make fast numb-feeling car, slap a huge ugly grill and get more sales in China
I agree with you, but to be fair, the 2 series is still driver oriented.
They changed the iconic line along the waist. I wouldn't guess it's a BMW from the side.
This. I hate the front end, but I hate the drab sides of the car even more.
To me, besides the hideous front, the exterior styling of modern BMWs are becoming more and more generic looking. So, they really have nothing going for them right now styling wise and everything relies solely on the badge and name, which to be fair is still going to bring them status obsessed customers.
@@corsa180 AND the proportions of this car are just.. off. Go 1:38 to the side view and look at all that distance from the rear door to the bumper. It has this rear engine look to it. Yuck
BMW: "What if we add weight and make it ugly as sin?"
God damn that's perfect!
The complaints about Chris Bangle's BMWs seems like such a minor footnote in car design these days...
I liked his designs when they came out and still do today. This one....hell no. Unfortunately China is driving design due to market volume. Sucks for the rest of the world.
Yeah even his worst work, the 2002 7-series, is less of a mess than this car...
M C I reckon the Bangle 7 series has aged really well. BMW needed to go in a different direction at that stage but were too afraid to do so. We then got another decade of cookie cutter BMWs before ending up with this mess of a design...

This car is very awkward from every angle. The sides are so damn soft a fiat 500 Abarth looks move aggressive. The e46 is rolling over in its grave. The q60 looks infinitely better than this.

I think a lot of people will probably do the same. The 340i Touring in particular is a nice, fast family wagon I must admit. The styling of the 4 is cringe worthy. I don't think I'd want to be seen in it despite it's immense performance.

@@spencer9352 In the vast majority of opinions. Have you ever seen this level of disgust with a BMW design before I mean 90% of the comments on here are saying how dissapointed they are with the looks of the damn thing. You have to be pretty tasteless to think that thing looks good and was a good direction for BMW to go in.
Imagine being this car's designer and literally everyone in the automotive world thinks it sucks. How often does that happen?!
Not only is the front end styling... as it is, but they managed to mess up the rear quarter panel for a coupe too. It's got that massive gap there, CTS-V coupe esque, because the rear window doesn't go down far enough. It makes the rear look large and blank above the rear tires and just... ooph.
Stylistically, the front grill and the rear quarter panel are equally horrible crimes, and two of the worst things about this car...the rear wheels look tiny, that expanse of metal above looks massive, and the defining BMW character line along the side has been traded for something that's partway between every other brand...with Lexus tailights...do these designers know they work for BMW?
And it has droopy Acura TLX tail lamps to really just rub you the wrong way.

It's like they saw a Bentley GT front end and wondered how they could make it look futuristic and ugly
Apparently is for the Chinese Market as they love big grills over there..
Most modern cars pump sound into the cabins, Toyota Ford VW Audi etc. Its because exhaust emissions and noise regulations. But on these inline six engines exhaust upgrades sound very good. The car looks okay but the grill is very ugly, doesn't fit in with the rest of the car.
Unpopular opinion: i don't mind fake audio. I have it had it in a few BMWs now and it somewhat makes up for the lack of induction noise.

I’ve seen a couple 2021 BMWs in my neighborhood and they look even worse without a front plate.
How can BMW make a coupe that not only isn't looking like a BMW at all but isn't good looking from a single angle?
This must be one of the first cars that looked better when it was clad in camouflage. The best way to rectify that front end is to have a crash.
The Designers of the new Kidney Grille did to BMW what the writers of Game of thrones did to the season 8 finale
I chose the M340 xDrive, however, I have no issue with the vertical grilles of 4 series or the new M3 and M4. Anyway, I think your technical review of the M440 is pretty accurate and the sounds emanating from the B58 in-line 6 are glorious. I disagree with you with regard to the exterior styling, but to each their own.
Bmw used to have base models that were hilarious to whip around. M3's that were benchmarks for how to build a refined sports car experience. Now we have heavy boats that are unrecognizable from the 3/4 series we've grown to expect (gives dodge a run for their money). Dont care how fast they are, its pointless if im bored. Give me a beater e36 and ill show you a good time ;)
Whod have thought the only german manufacturer left with a sense of humor would be mercedes... (e63 drift mode, gla45 rally car, gle goes bouncy mode lol)
Yes! As often as I agree with Matt, I think his note about AWD numbing the car isn’t actually relevant. My E46 330xi 6MT (admittedly heavily modded but almost as enjoyable stock) puts a smile on my face no matter what I’m doing with it, and there’s no obvious lack of feel while hustling it up a canyon. The real problem with newer bimmers is the greater number of softer bushings, out of control NVH dampening tech, and electric steering that has specifically had the feel and feedback tuned out.
Those are all heavy ass cars as well. Your complaining about boats and list even more boats what’s your point?
@@f181234 they're fun, sure not as much as old lighter beemers but they're modern german cars with a sense of humor. What a misleading title! This car is beautiful not ugly! I get so many compliments on mine daily .
Typically throughout my life I start out the launch of a new vehicle by disliking its design, then progress into an appreciation of its ethos and maybe even a complete adoration such as with the Ferrari 458. And yes, I confess that I originally didn't like its triple tailpipe layout or lack of intake on the sides, but we all now love it to this day. This BMW is a striking deviation from that trend in that I was able to appreciate it at first, and now I actually dislike it quite a lot. It's the complete opposite of my appreciation of the 458's genius and I hope they do a change in a couple of years or sooner.
9:45 I’ve never heard a more accurate statement about new bmws
This car is going to sell really well. For every BMW fanboy crying over it, there's going to be a bunch more new BMW buyers that like the aggressive look. I'm not a BMW fan but I like this design. It might be a bit too ahead of its time but BMW was becoming so boring with their designs, they needed something like this.
You said it perfectly. I only dr e BMW cars and I am sick of the same design. New car same design. Cant tell them apart. This car in person is beautiful. Each to their own but I love the grill. In 2 years time no one will notice as all cars will eventually take this direction. I can’t believe how many sheep there are out there. As soon as someone makes a negative statement everyone jumps on that. Those people will eventually like this model when it becomes mainstream. No innovation means people get bored. Only criticism is that it is very big.
It just looks so awful, who would spend money on such a thing? You'd really have to be wearing very strong BMW rose tinted glasses.

I got the opportunity to auto-cross this car at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro Mass during bmw’s ultimate driving experience. When I tell you this car is quick…it’s quick. The grip is amazing, shifts in sport mode are fast, and the braking is more than enough. My only issue I have is sometimes you do loose rear end grip in corners when your really on it, causing you to correct it. Overall it’s a great fun car that’s track ready from factory.
