king of the world, definitely one of the Dan's most underrated songs. And, one song that showcases what a talent Walter Becker was on the bass.

I'm always impressed by the drummer on this song. It is so hard to keep that same steady beat going for the whole song.

KOTW: The chord changes as (and after) he sings "king of the world as far as I know" remind me very much of Jethro Tull. The funky rhythm section speaks loudly of Isaac Hayes. And the synthesizers give me a feel of ELP. A great amalgam of styles and instrumentation.
Saw them do both songs live several times in 1974 with the great Jeff Porcaro augmenting the rhythm section. King of the World was a standout live, on fire!

Great, listen and great reactions! Really appreciate your appreciation of the these two songs and particular and Steely Dan in gneral. Even though, sometimes their lyrics on the surface may not seem to be in sync with the music - it somehow it always beautifully is. Steely Dan always takes me to a higher joyful place.
Always nice stuff from Steely Dan. I'm not a huge fan but I've heard them on the radio a lot back in the day so at the very least it's nostalgic. For some reason I associate "My Old School" with my senior year of high school, must have been played a lot this time of year before graduation? I always particularly liked the sax riff right after he sings "California, tumbles into the sea" because it sounds like something tumbling down and the low note at the end when it hits bottom. 😅
Tons of nostalgia with this band. A big part of their vibe I think. Didn't catch that sax trick. Someone also said the synth mimics a siren on KOTW...Thanks as always for stopping by! 😎
Countdown To Ecstasy is often considered to be SD's 3rd/4th best album---for most artists, Countdown To Ecstasy would be a greatest hits/best of collection... just one outstanding song after another...wait until you get to " Your Gold Teeth " and " The Boston Rag ".
They were more guitar oriented(mixed with the jazz influences)with more rock at this time(as opposed to the Aja and Gaucho albums). Dark themes with upbeat music?! Walter and Donald loved doing that

No Brandon..California is Not tumbling into the sea😂Your face at that point was a Picture. I love 'My Old School' and its not just the instruments but the Words make me picture so many things away from the meaning of the song. I missed quite a lot of S.D including the second song. Upbeat sound and hopeful lyrics, need to relisten as it's new to me this one. Great to join you again, for one of my favourite band reactions🎉🎉

@@retroreactions.... Can't buy a Thrill has some great stuff on it, including those two tracks. The problem with it is Donald only sings half of the songs on it. So, it only feels like half a Steely Dan album to me. Yes, Pretzel Logic was a big step up.

I can tell you have slightly different tastes, but you always really like the stuff that I do; it’s just the stuff that I don’t really care for that you seem to like, and it sometimes makes me wonder why. And I don’t think I’ve ever seen you react to something you DONT like, I wonder what it would take?
One day we will find it! But honestly, between picking new stuff from bands I know and love, from the guidance of my viewers, and from researching "best of" lists on the net, almost everything I choose will at least be "good". Add to that my extremely huge taste in genres (from opera to goth metal to 40s and 50s standards to new age etc.). There have been a few 1, 2 and 3 golden record rated songs on the channel, and I can easily name tons of songs I don't care for, so they are out there!
King of the world is an incredible underrated song! I agree with the host.. My old school is fabulous... its all on your taste, thats what makes music unique
