I'm not converting my van until this series is completely done because your last 3 videos are more informative than EVERY other diy video I've researched in the last 2 years. Thanks Ben👍🏾🖤❤️🖤💯

Keep on going! This series is among my favorite of yours. The skateboard plywood fixie is my #1 favorite and is a project I'd love to tackle myself since I love biking.
Also, some of the things I've always enjoyed about your videos are that A: You are not afraid to admit that you are NOT an expert. B: You freely admit that you are learning as you go with your projects and are sharing the journey with us. C: You admit making mistakes. D: All your videos are entertaining on top of being informative.

Hey Ben, love your work. Three suggestions:
Use a spring-loaded centre punch to locate the drill tip next time you want to prevent the drill from skipping out of place at the start.
A sheetmetal nibbler attachment for a battery drill will cut the sheetmetal easier and cleaner.
Don't stress too much over the edge rusting - modern vehicles are galvanised. Galvanising protects the exposed edges.

    • @marcmoore1723
      @marcmoore1723 5 днів тому

The metal is galvanized until you cut it as the gavinizing is a thin layer on the surface of the metal. Cut edges are not gavinized.

I just installed 6 windows in my new van. The first hole took me about a week to cut, 6.99 days of working myself up to it, a few minutes to do. Now, no big deal, it gets a lot easier after the first...

Love these videos man. My wife and I are on our honeymoon and for it, we got to borrow her parents (way too luxurious) camper van for 4 weeks. It's a dream come true to be able to travel like this. So of course, now we also want one, hahaha! :D I'll be sure to check out all your instals (and overcoming of fears), as we plan to do something similar in the future. Keep it up, cheers!

I fried several of these boards before I started installing a super cheap buck voltage regulator. It can be set to feed it a steady 10.5V and I haven’t had issues since. I don’t know why Maxxair hasn’t started including this $3 part yet since most solar powered van systems will fry their boards.

I install MaxxAir 6200 (manual lift) or 7500 (remote lift) in just about every build and can attest to the finicky nature of the 7500 model's circuit board. I build a 24V power system which typically includes a 24V to 12V buck converter that outputs a constant/regulated 12V (usually 12.2V-12.4V). Even so, I've had to replace the circuit boards on two fans. Happily, the manufacturer provides stellar customer support, so replacements were immediately sent out.
Airxcel states that the voltage sensitivity has been remedied in all fans built after a certain date, so new stock shouldn't exhibit this problem.
The only (hopefully constructive) comments I have are 1) use butyl tape instead of Window Weld to secure the adapter to the van, and 2) lap sealant, not Sika 221, is the preferred final barrier. You'll also find that it's much easier to apply. Tip: Mask the area for a professional looking result. Many people don't and I'm just not a fan of the uncontained "ooze".

As far as the voltage regulator goes, while car batteries are considered 12v, the voltage is actually higher at around 12.5v (this fluctuates though depending on how charged the battery is and the load on the battery). But more importantly, the alternator that charges the battery does so at 14.4v. You can also get voltage spikes due to how the alternator works fundamentally. Digital electronics are sensitive to voltages outside their normal range, so you use a voltage regulator to both smooth out the voltage to a stable level and lower the voltage to the appropriate amount.

Bought two fans. When I installed them one worked and one had the green light death thing. Out of warranty by the time I installed so it cost me a extra $150 for a new circuit board. I went and bought limiters to prevent any over voltage issues. Working fabulous now.

Maxxfan 7500 owner here, it is the loudest thing in my van. Rattles and squeaks from Day 1, sounds like a box of bolts when semi goes past. Lots of threads on sprintersource for how to reduce noise with foam and felt tape rebuild. Why can't they just add a little more R&D to fix this? Longstanding issues with documented history. Great video Woby, sorry for the rant

Okay your doing a great job, I just have a question about the fan install are those 4 screws on the outside the only thing holding the fan on? I ask because it seems like a real easy way to break into the van if it was left while out Adventuring. Great job none the less

Kind of crazy they don't just supply a buck converter with these fans if they're susceptible to overvoltage it's universally known that Alternator voltage regulators put out ~14.4v to 0 based on battery voltage. Thought I wouldn't be surprised if this issue is more related to DIY battery/solar setups.

I noticed you said "shower" while talking about what the fan would be around, and I just want to throw my two cents in the comments. I think a shower in a camper van is kind of a worst of both worlds. It takes up a large amount of space (space is everything in a van), the space given isn't going to be comfortable at all, and it requires the work of fully waterproofing and setting up channels in case that waterproofing doesn't work so you don't flood your van. In my opinion, you'd probably be better off just having a gym membership or getting a shower head that you can connect to a long hose with an electric pump to/from your sink water reservoir and hang out the back of the van. With that second option you'd also probably want to invest in some sort of fold out shower curtain a la your spray booth for obvious privacy reasons.

I installed a shower inside my van and it does not use any additional floor space. The shower is located in the entryway of the van. The custom sloped stainless steel shower pan is inset into the insulated floor, has a teak inlay, and a trap door covering it all up. Heat up the hot water, hook up the shower curtain that has magnets in the bottom corners of the curtain, inlay the steel slats that fit between the teak inlay and the stainless steel showerpan and I have a larger inside shower than most camper vans and the shower curtain keeps all the water draining as intended.
