  • It's not uncommon to see anglers roll casting a sinktip line out of the water, before making a Spey cast. The vast majority of time, it's completely unnecessary to roll cast a sinktip line or short full sinking line out of the water before making our Spey cast.
Let's look at how to extract sinkers and get them on their way without wasting time and energy on a roll cast.

Thanks for this! It really helped me identify an issue with my casting this weekend. I went to the river with this video in mind, because I always "clear my line" before my cast. I immediately realized my issue was that I always start my cast with my rod too high (like 45degrees to the water), so there was no room to even lift my rod high in the first place. So focusing on starting my cast with rod parallel to the water, then doing the gradual high lift worked perfectly everytime I did it right.

Thank you so much for this spey casting series. All these tips and tricks will help a beginner like myself alot when salmon season starts and im sure people with years of experience will pick up a few things aswell.

Nice , I remember When I first started I was trying you yank the sinking lines out until by accident I went slow and made the perfect cast . And your absolutely right water speed definitely effects your timing it really is a feel thing . I’ve found out the only way to get better is go fish :-) thanks for the video

Thank you again for another great lesson in casting.
Have you considered doing a series of videos on spey fishing (i.e. where to cast, how to lead and sink the fly, when to mend and how to approach a run/fish)?
We can all learn from your vast experience . Thank you in advance.

I have a number of videos where I'm illustrating fishing situations while doing a rod or line demo. I'll have to go through my stock footage to see what I have left.

Peter - big fan of your site and this series. Are you going to do a session on line management? Are there tips you have for controlling line with your off hand? David Charles

Hi David, part 25 and part 26 get into running line issues. They'll be released Feb 6th and 11th respectively.
