If Anna just focused on her game with full dedication and ignored the hype around her she could have been a champion. She had the talent and skill, and MORE than enough power - look at some of the shots she banged into the corners to dismiss Hingis at times. She just lacked mental focus, and at times had dodgy shot selection. The serve, as we know, let her down but Anna was known for her high ace count early in her career: the beauty got in the way - too many photo shoots!
If that mother of hers fell back and let Nick Bollettieri be the coach, that would've helped her career immensely. Anna could've done the photo shoots and Nick would've made sure her game was ready to win championships!
Anna definitely had talent. The results probably weren't coming fast enough for her to keep believing in herself. There are a number of players these days who have breakthroughs in their late 20's to 30's. She would have broken through had she stuck with it. But ahe realized her beauty could make her some money
Kournikova had a lot of talent but never managed to get her mental game together, the score says it all. always more interested in her looks than on being a champion . two beautiful girls.
Being talented ain’t enough at the pro level. To be a champion one has got to be focused, determined, dedicated and mentally tough. These are things Ana was not.
Kournikova had all the tools, she just had no consistency .Knowing how well you can play, then have you play slide of in the middle of a game must be so disheartening .
This can be argued down, but I believe Anna's game was more complete than Martina's. Had she possessed Martina's mentality...IT WOULDA BEEN A WRAP! Remember, Martina didn't have a lot of power. Anna could do everything Martina did PLUS she had that easy power! Lindsay Davenport gave Anna props on her power game for god's sake.
@ProAudio FreakShow Lmao...I SAID if she had Martina's MENTALITY. That means she would've had that complete game and would've probably done a whole lot better. It was what it was.
I agree with everyone. Anna Kournikova could have been a singles slam title winner. I blame the WTA Age Restrictions Rule. That affected Anna Kournikova. Hingis was lucky and turned pro before the WTA Age Restrictions took place. Thank goodness because Hingis' best results came when she was 16. Had Hingis been restricted she might not have won slam titles in 1997. I'm still upset that Hingis didn't win the calendar year slam in 1997. That fall from her horse did affect her as well as her temper. Ugh! I'm convinced that every athlete has a biological clock on how many years the body can handle world class athleticism. Therefore, the age restrictions is too restrictive. 16 should be allowed to play full time. And Anna could have won at 16, 17, a singles slam title. Oh well. I hope the WTA will revise its Age Restrictions rules.
Two of the most beautiful players in tennis history
What ? Are you serious? Anna yes but Martina no.

I agree. She could've been in the top 5.
Anna had some stunning shots in this game!
Oh how in love with “tennis” I was back then.😉
WTF. I hate when they don't show the handshake to pan into something else.
Kournikova many a time got on top of Hingis to then let her back in the match . If only she worked on her serve during these years
Anna was a good player. She gave it to Hingis in matches.
Best two looking in tennis

Uh, no. She was injured for much of her young career and then retired at 21 due to a chronic back injury.
Kournikova had a lot of talent but never managed to get her mental game together, the score says it all. always more interested in her looks than on being a champion . two beautiful girls.

Two beautiful girls playing tennis. One is very good, the other, I don't care.
OMG! Anna is playing perfectly here! Did she suffer from injuries too?

The two most important tools she was missing was mental toughness and focus.

For me Hingis was prettier than Kournikova
Should have gone to Spec Savers
Me too is my Favourite

Martina Hingis is not only the better Player, for me she Looks also better than Kournikova
