One of the first wisdom words that my father told me as soon as I learnt swimming is. No matter how confident you feel about your swimming, Don't get into unknown and unfamiliar water bodies and be extremely wary of getting into water to save some one, especially when other person is a not a swimmer. Non swimmers typically panic very easily in water and in the desperation will hold on to rescuer very tightly, making it impossible for the rescuer to swim and manuver. You need to extreamly good swimmer if you intend to rescue a non-swimmer or for that matter any drowning person. I am just glad that both you learnt your lesson without any loss of life or limb.
In addition to what you said , My friend who taught me swimming also told me to get hold of the drowning persons hair and pull not getting closer to the person
In Australia we learn to swim from a young age, and are taught about how a drowning person will pull you under. They have no control over their panic. Years ago we were taught to knock a person unconscious before attempting to pull them ashore!!! Now we are just taught to approach from behind, and only as a last resort. Flotation objects, even a stick, should be used first.
yeah man I am a lifeguard , we been told crazy shit as you said : knocking etc - conscious person always only with flopy, or even clothes direct body to body imposible couse they will take you down with you with panic - we been told that if this happen if they hug you let them sink down with you and than underwatter try to escape and work on it . Its crazy. Enjoy OZ hope you surf haha muh love

the same thing happened with me, due to peer pressure my friend came into the deep side of the lake and he started drowning. now i was confident in my swimming abilities n swam immediately near him only to realize its almost impossible to save someone without prior experience the scariest part is he started pushing my head down inside the water so he could breathe. so that day we both could have died if some adult hadn't come who put my friend on his back and swam to safety. btw love from india!
It's amazing how stupid non-swimmers will be when they see swimmers playing in water. People worry about what will kill them as tourists in Australia, and I tell them that their greatest danger is drowning! So many tourists from India and Asia cannot swim. They have no idea how easily they can lose their footing and/or be dragged under, even in waist-deep water.
I am raised beside of a river ..when you are going to save a non swimer always grab his or her hair & if they try to attach themself on you punch on the face ,they would be loose again now grab hair and pull out ...
Atleast the drowning guy had the guts to dive into the water. As per me that's something commendable. I could never imagine myself jumping into deep waters when I didn't know how to swim. To be honest it was Bernado's mistake, being a swimmer he could not acess the risk he was about to take. It's obvious that a drowning guy will panic and will take hold of any support he gets. Yeah sadly, many times people drown when trying to save others who are drowning due to a variety of reasons: the other person is struggling too hard and taking you with them, they faint and you have to swim with deadweight now which is much harder than people think, your stamina runs out, your feet gets tangled by seaweeds, etc. So please be careful. I have to say that the PTSD from a near-death experience in the water is overwhelming. When I was urged to try to walk through a running torrent of water only 10 or 12 feet across but 5 feet deep, by my boyfriend at that time, AT NIGHT, with a helmet with a light, huge boulders sticking out above the water to inevitably knock me unconscious, and my being carried down almost like a leaf, if he hadn't been strong enough to plant his feet and like throw me across, it would have been my life, not his. We made it, but I remember that all the PTSD from all the other events in my life rendered me unable to speak for a long while the rest of the night as we were at a party with others who had no idea what we went through. Even if you can swim, the water in Nature is very clear and unrelenting, Praise all the gods the other people saw what was going on and helped!! But I get it, and I love the water, but I'm so careful now. Jaya Ganesha you were with others!!!

I never knew the risk of saving a drowning person until reading these comments. I almost drowned a long time ago and this lady saved me. I remember feeling someone grab my hands and calm me down. After that, I was so scared I couldn't move my legs to put them down after reaching shallow water. I mean to be fair I was like 7, a third of her size, so I didn't really pose as much of a threat.
I have a friend who is a professional lifeguard at a beach. He told me he once had to knock out a guy who was panicking so bad that he made it impossible for him to keep both of their heads over the surface of the water.
WATER IS SOOO SCARY!!! you should had told the boy not to grab your hands when saving him BEFORE you agreed of swimming him to the shore.. that made you STRONGER i believe and GOD SAW your kind intention! #GLORYtoLORDJESUS #GODBLESSyou

I know from my Instagram that people love that haha :D and I also had a lot of silly, funny and stupid travel mistakes... gosh. Its a part of travelling as well :)
Damn, I'm glad you're okay. This is unfortunately a common occurrence. People who are drowning go into survival mode and will oftentimes tragically drown the very people who are trying to save them. I think life guards are taught to approach drowning people from behind for this very reason, and if they still somehow latch onto you, swimming downwards will usually make them let go. If they still don't let go or if you're unable to do that for some reason, use any force necessary to stun them for long enough to get away.
In our area 2month before my friend relative died because he tried to save a non swimmer... He having two child age 34... He is a good swimmer due to sudden rise in water current he drown and taken away by water force and smashed in rock... The body found 12km away from the incidents... But other guy catched tree root very tightly and got saved...
You're right bro, I had same experience and that time it is very stupid because I was at the age of 17, we did it in a well and nobody there to help us. Only one thing I did is-i used a rope to climb up on my previous driving otherwise we both almost lost in it. It's been more than 11 years but I still see the visuals from my mind.. It's very hard to forget about it. And it's more painful if we loose one the life..
When we were little, we used to go to our village for summer vacations, there we had a big pond where people used to bath, so, one day while playing in the pond, uncles from my village taught me how to swim, I was like 6 years old then, I was so happy when I was able to swim, then at one place which I thought was shallow I decided to stop, but it was actually deep and in panic, I was trying to fight the water that was rushing in and making me drown, I was saved by my elder sister but after that I haven't swam properly. It would be nice to learn swimming once more but times have kind of changed and we don't get the chance to go their much either.
I will share this, because it is so important. I took lifesaving, and if someone is acting like that, it is better to get away from them, or they will drown you, in your case you could not. We also grabbed people by the hair and pulled them that way, it does not hurt actually, but leaves you room to get away if you need to. Hugs!
Knowing to swim and saving people from drowning are two different things. I also underwent quite a same situation where, while trying to save a friend, the latter grabbed me tightly. I was able to free myself by punching him in the belly..kidney area. I was able to save him by getting at his back and pushing him ashore.
In case it's not clear enough, I just wanted to help the guy with his jump. I never thought it was this difficult to take someone out of the water. Never try this at home please.

thank you for sharing this! it was lesson you had to learn. it is as it is! I really appreciate that you are so real here on UA-cam! I would love to hear more about your Travel "mistakes" / fails.
Hey Bernardo I love your stories I'm not able to travel as much as I'd like to, so its great to watch your adventures 👐🏾🙂
Similar incident happened to me in a swimming pool when I was learning how to swim
But I was the one who drowned
@ that's so brave of you to come out with this video and lessons for others. 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank god you are ok...god bless you ♥️♥️♥️🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳🇮🇳

I just Love your videos !!
Big Fan !
Bernardo plz come to INDIA Again we love you!!! ❤️✌️🇮🇳
Love You Bro From India 💓💓💓🙏🙏
this is the scariest thing i can ever imagine, unfortunately i lost 2 of my friends.
I had the similar experience in Kaveri river at Muttatti. But the person drowning was not a stranger but my brother. Those few secs were horrible.
We kannadigas love u subscibed brother try kodagu, gokarna once one of beautiful landcapes in karnataka
You were not immature..you just tried to help him.. don't blame urself..❤️
