Knowing your audience sets you up for success as you prepare for a speech or presentation. The public speaking technique of audience analysis can help you better connect with your audience, keep them engaged and leave them inspired.
Plus, you can preempt any distractions for your audience with context analysis and paying attention to the environment you’re speaking in.

OK, let’s prepare with the audience in mind.
Your audience will typically experience these emotions along your speech or presentation: at first, they are interested, then they become engaged and involved, and finally they feel motivated or inspired.
Here are some questions for audience analysis with the goal of achieving the three emotions: audience interest, engagement and motivation.
🔎 AUDIENCE INTEREST:
⇢ Who are they? What do they care about?
⇢ Are they attending by choice?
⇢ What do they already know?
⇢ What do they NEED to know?
💡 Helps you decide how to open a presentation, come up with opening hooks and introductions.
🔎 AUDIENCE MOTIVATION:
⇢ What are their challenges or frustrations? What is their ideal solution?
💡 Helps you decide which story, anecdote or example to use so your audience can better RELATE to it. Also helps you decide how to end your speech/presentation.
🔎 AUDIENCE ENGAGEMENT:
⇢ Do they have any preconceptions or biases?
⇢ What would they disagree on?
⇢ What is their likely mood?
💡 Helps you decide your speaking tone, body language and any changes in your energy levels.
By knowing your audience, their demographics, the context/environment, you set yourself up for success every time you speak.

Communication is a two-way street. Have you ever felt disconnected with a speaker? If so, let me know why. 👇
Hi Anita,
Yes, I have felt disconnected before with a speaker. I remember that it was because he was not very enthusiastic and was speaking out of context, and he confused me and I ended up getting bored. 🙃🙂
Great video… helped me a lot❤
i just want to know what foundation she's using. holy crap. her skin looks FLAWLESS

Hey Taylor, you literally made my whole day (maybe even my month), haha. 😆 I use L'Oreal, girl.

You're very welcome, Shahneez!
This video is perfect but I can't use it because there is not subtitles so sad.... please correct.
Any chance you could put in accurate closed captioning (with periods and full sentences so I can show this to my students and have it be fully accessible)?
Hi Franklin, thanks for this suggestion! Yes, I'll soon be working on accurately captioning the videos here to make them better accessible.
Damn, I just found this channel, subscribed, saved a bunch of videos to only find out she hasn't posted a video in over a year
You're right, we were on a hiatus. I'm a science communicator and the year of the pandemic was my season to serve the scientific community. 🙂 Thanks so much for being a subscriber! I truly appreciate it. Hope you enjoy the new videos that will start appearing here!
Thanks so much!
You're so welcome, Domenique!
👍👍
The audience stays connected and responds well. But on another occasion, different audiences disappoint with poor responses to the same speech.. In both the cases, the type of audience was same.
I m not good speaker how I improve in English
Mam you are extremely beautiful ❤️😘
you good looking
I listened to a stand-up comedian, at a Toastmasters meeting, and the subject turned into a traumatic experience, reliving the same personal event. He also used his wife's trauma. The speaker completely missed the audience's background. I was reluctant to continue with my membership. Another issue is foul language and sexual innuendo. Lost me after the first few words and embarrassed me.
