      I would say that heartiest congratulations should go to the British people who financed it all. In 1956 to 1970, I was at Chatham Dockyard and I worked on the O and S class submarines, both in the docks and at the drawing office during their design stage. I remember my leading draughtsman was a Mr. Skelton. I checked the insulation all the equipment before one submarine commenced its electrical operations. You know, back then, I did feel the run down of the Navy and Lord Louis Mountbatten did his best to keep Chatham Dockyard open as long as possible. I went down that Dockyard Hill for many years, that hill where the bus accident took place. I saw the rundown of Chatham Dockyard coming and so I left to go to the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and that move helped me a lot in overcoming the difficulties I met at the Dockyard and of the dockyard closing. I was going to ASWE, on research but, feeling that the RN was going to be trimmed substantially, I decided not to return to the Royal Navy. It is a pity really as I loved working on, Transmitters, AGE antennas, gunnery control, the analogue computer for the torpedoes and the 22 transducer on the sub's side to get and then process the required information to control homing torpedoes, their waveguides. I worked on coding machines, the American KDF 7 I think it was named, together with the many teleprinters associated with it. May I reluctantly make this public, I respected the Royal Navy so much, but they never respected me, nor even bothered to get to know me, even though my practical work and academic results were amongst the best, when considering that I competed with others at Chatham, Davenport and Portsmouth. Would anyone believe it, that after I was amongst the best students in all the Dockyards mentioned and obtaining a 1st class honours degree from Newcastle Upon Tyne University and a Doctorate, the Navy used me to change heating filaments in their tea boilers and to install incinerators in ladies' toilets at Chatham. I hate saying this, but that is the truth. Anyway, good luck Royal Navy, let us hope that its commanders treat their people better than they treated me. Anyone can look up the records, as at that time I was known by the same name, Carmel Pule' .

    I remember standing on Sallyport beach in 1982 waving my dad off as he sailed out of Portsmouth on HMS Invincible to the Falklands. He was the Buffer. I was 11 and with the child naivety knew we would win because my dad was going.
    He would have been very proud to see this beauty sailing from Portsmouth.

    Someone earlier suggested that Britain just purchase used carriers from USA!
    why would Britain want buy clapped out used American kit when, as we so clearly see here, capable of building her own world class carriers custom built around state-of-the-art weapons systems that don't compete with USA and other allies but compliment them. example new British destroyers provide air defenses to American carriers. And the close relationship between Royal Navy and US Navy and Marines as hard-hitting expeditionary forces.
    and being non-nuclear powered these new carriers can enter ports and waterways (Suez & Panama canals come to mind) that ban nuclear powered boats. so... if you need to move from the Red sea to the Med. it’s only a couple of days versus 2 to 3 weeks to sail around Africa... longer if you need to move from the Atlantic to the Pacific. As you are compelled to sail around South America instead of a couple of days going through the Panama Canal. saved time that can determine outcomes and project serious power quickly.
    meanwhile what have Russia and China got?
    True Russia has a 30-year-old rusty old bucket that requires an ocean going tug to accompany her.
    while China also has a rusty old second-hand hulk acquired from some second rate naval power.
    No.. the Queen Elizabeth and the soon to arrive Princo with their accompanying weapons capabilities are serious fighting kit as I am sure we will see soon enough

      John Hall if ski jumps are a desperate solution, why do most of the worlds Navies use them, ( I will give you a clue if you can't work it out? A plane using a ski ramp can carry more munitions and more fuel than a plane using a catapult) and stop blaming the Royal Navy for the UK Government's stupidity and penny pinching!

    • @Albertkallal
      @Albertkallal 6 років тому +3

      @John Hall
      Their is some compromises, but you get faster cycle time than a catapult. Before one plane is off ramp next plane is already turning and spooling up engines - this process is far faster than catapults. USA carriers only have faster launch cycles because of 4 launchers. Catapults do give more aircraft options, but cycle time is not one of the benefits. VSTOL has some limitations, but f35b is a game changer and has few compromises over traditional jets. I do think adding v22 refueling planes to HMS Q will make limitations even smaller of an issue. With 3 potential f35 squadrons on the HMS Q, I would concede the HMS Q is most powerful carrier outside of US carriers.

    • @mcallahan9060
      @mcallahan9060 6 років тому +1

      John Hall, The real sad part is that the way in which the RN plans to utilize these ships. Rather than a full compliment of F-35s, which would be very potent though still limited, they plan on these being some sort of hybrid platform, part helicopter assault ship and part aircraft carrier. In other words they'll be fair in both roles and good in neither. Not exactly what you want when you spend that much tax payers money.

    • @Albertkallal
      @Albertkallal 6 років тому +1

      Well, in "general" a full 3 squads of 35 will not always be required. (36), so I not really sure it a issue. If they can "when" required field that many fighters, then they can and will. Anything that can field 30+ fighters is certainly not "lame" by any standards - especially given the f35 abilities - even the B model is a rather potent fighter.

They look good, shame we didn't get the Alpha design, appear to be very well engineered (the USN are impressed with the build) and I can't wait to visit QE. But we would have been better off with 12 Astutes and 12 T45 with ASW capability as intended (it is hard to stomach that the junior RAN has better ships in the Hobart's). They keep us on the top table and the USN are happy to accommodate and support us with this capability. Even if F35b is a cul-de-sac and the USN seems to be moving on already past F35x.

Aircraft Carrier´s are more likely the Battleships of the 21 century. they are nice for power-projection(prestige-object) against mediocare militaries. but their effectivness in war between major powers is questionable.

    Unfortunately its not Nuclear powered, she runs on Fuel Oil, the budget did not extend to make her Nuclear. She has to call into port to refuel and on long deployments is refuelled by Tanker at sea. A significant weakness in time of war because if you sink the Tankers and hit the Ports she needs to refuel at with air launched or submarine launched missiles, she's just a drifting coffin. Other than that she looks good.

      Anthony - You seem to be unfamiliar with reality. A nuclear carrier needs RAS because a) it has aircraft that burn fuel which has a 'shelf life', b) its has a crew that needs feeding and c) it uses weapons that need replacing. And given every one of its support carrier group are not nuclear powered they will need refuelling.
      And by the way the US Navy nuclear carriers have very few ports they can visit in emergency. the QE's can go anywhere and will. Oh and we visit ports to 'show the flag' or embark equipment not to refuel (although of course they can).

      The UK have the capability to build carriers and want to keep it is probably the main thing. If they were willing to spend the money they could have built a carrier pretty much equivalent to USS Ford, but it's just not viable for the Royal Navy. Instead they've built two QE class for less than the price of USS Ford.
      The QE class are tailored a bit more to the Royal Navy's needs, particularly in terms of crew requirements, they have much more automation on board so that the crew is kept to a minimum.

    • @1chish
      @1chish 6 років тому +1

      Garry Bragg - well bad or not at least it has passed all its sea trials and will be flying hundreds of aircraft sorties off its decks very soon. And the USS Gerald R Ford? .. sits in port 'unfit for service' - US Navy report - and It cost 3 times what the QE cost and needs 4,500 crew while the QE needs 1,600. Nothing bad about this beauty ...
      It will be embarrassing for the US Navy when the QE sails into Newport, passing the tied up and useless Ford, having achieved full fixed wing certification.

    • @1chish
      @1chish 6 років тому +1

      g mack - Look if you are trying to make a prick of yourself do it with someone who gives a flying one. GRF is NOT operational and is NOT sailing anywhere. She has been Commissioned but that means Diddley Squat and her status is "Special, in service". Right now she is laid up back in the builder's yard being 'fixed'. Maybe you will believe the clearly unbiased 'Navy Times'?
      July 16 2018:
      "The nation’s newest aircraft carrier returned to a Virginia shipyard Sunday for a year of planned upgrades and fixes, marking the next phase in the development of the Navy’s most advanced and scrutinized warship."
      "Ford's stay at Newport News Shipbuilding will address some well-publicized problems, many of which have involved its cutting-edge systems."
      "In January, the Navy's Operational Test and Evaluation Force highlighted "poor or unknown reliability" issues involving the Ford's new launch and land systems as well as its new radar and weapons elevators. The report said the ship "is unlikely to be able to conduct the type of high-intensity flight operations expected during wartime."
      "The Ford’s stay at the shipyard is a normal step toward combat readiness, which is expected in 2022"
      www.navytimes.com/news/your-navy/2018/07/16/aircraft-carrier-gerald-r-ford-enters-next-development-phase-at-shipyard/
      So it will NOT be operational until 2022 and is sat in a fucking builders yard. NOW who is the 'fuckboy'? Useless prick ...

    With no organic AEW capability on board it is a sitting duck.
    Don't try & tell me that some sort of rotary winged cuff job will fulfill the role .... any large carrier needs a twin engined fixed wing pressurised AEW aircraft capable of cruising at altitude in excess of 35000 feet.
    Why does it have to sail to the USA to conduct trials with the F35B when we have just had such a huge fanfare about their arrival in the UK?
    I suspect now the RAF have their hands on them at Marham they will hardly ever be allowed to go to sea.

    • @davetrousers
      @davetrousers 6 років тому

      The test F35B are in the US, that's why.

    • @dingerbell100
      @dingerbell100 6 років тому

      John Hall: The amount of BS & rhetoric surrounding these ships & the F35B is absolutely astounding. The RN & RM have sold their soul to have them. An entire RM Cdo Unit has been sacrificed to enable the so called 'capability'.
      The result is that the UK no longer possesses a viable amphibious component be it shipping or a viable independent amphibious military formation.
      The actual F35B is a grossly inferior aircraft, whilst the USMC may claim that it is now 'in service' this comes with some massive capability gaps.
      The cannon fitted to the aircraft is not cleared to engage ground targets in support of friendly troops.
      The aircraft is not cleared or even capable of delivering current in service guided bombs.
      The aircraft cannot fire the AMRAAM or any of the other current in service air to air guided weaponry.
      All of these capabilities were available with the Sea Harrier & with the Harrier GR9.
      None of the F35 Maritime variants will be capable of 'buddy buddy' in flight refuelling. This is crucial when conducting Maritime Fixed Wing Aviation operations - should an aircraft require extra fuel when returning from a sortie then it is the ONLY option when out in the open ocean. This capability was discarded with the Sea Harrier in 2003. The other option is to ditch the aircraft.
      But apparently the F35B is a giant leap forward.
      As a further example .... a single Harrier Main Landing Gear Tyre used to last approximately 100 sorties before it became worn out by the stresses & abrasiveness of the carrier deck.
      The USMC have discovered an equivalent F35B tyre is only lasting less than 10 sorties ... welcome to the rip off world of Lockheed Martin ... imagine the cost of tyres along over the lifespan of a single aircraft!
      Oh .... BTW ... WTF would I know ... 24 years in a Lovat Green Suit ... thats all!

    • @simonhool3073
      @simonhool3073 6 років тому

      dingerbell100 I’m sure the MOD and the officers serving on board know a great deal more than you when it comes to AEW capability. If you watch the video you’ll learn that QE is sailing to America as the jets over there are the correct test versions. You have no evidence to suggest that the RAF will not release the F35B’s at Marham.

    • @dingerbell100
      @dingerbell100 6 років тому

      Trisram Randall: I served in the MoD for 24 years fella In Lovat Green ... so I do know what I am talking about. The truth of the matter IS that this ship has ABSOLUTELY NO airborne early warning cover at all. It has to rely on whatever radar is fitted to that large mast & whatever cover the Type 45 destroyer which sails with it can provide - making the Type 45 the primary target. The point of AEW is that it provides EARLY WARNING - it is a moot point brought out by the loss of the Sheffield during the Falklands where the RN had to deploy destroyers in a radar picket screen in a very non tactical way to protect the carriers & large passenger ships from anti shipping missiles. I bet you are not old enough to remember how that & San Carlos ended out for the RN?
      The ship is also fitted with diesel engines which mean that not only is it restricted in speed it is also hugely restricted in range & it will require constant attendance by a fleet tanker. Ships like this also require a huge amount of electricity power supply.
      Why in heavens name did they not opt for a nuclear power plant? The UK already has the technology for nuclear power supply for its attack submarines. As the project was initially given the go ahead under the labour Govt it was clearly just a vote winning ploy by Gordon Brown since most of the work was carried out in Labour constituencies. A nuclear power plant was written out of the budget at the outset since it would be too costly.
      With a nuclear power plant the endurance of this ship would have only been restricted by the supplies of food for the crew & aviation fuel for the aircraft.
      As John Hall has clearly stated above:
      "As it stands now, you are a nation that wants to be playing with the big boys but can’t afford the toys. So you come to a half way house, which will need lots of support from friends if a bully shows up for a fight. If a real war breaks out, you don’t have the critical mass to be minimally effective."
      The RN has reduced its manpower down to sub critical numbers & sold its soul to have two of these vessels.
      The RN is not even the major stakeholder in the aircraft that will fly from this ship - the RAF is. The UK has actually ordered only one version the F35 - the B variant when in actual fact to properly exploit the carrier strike concept it also requires the F35C.
      But without a nuclear power plant a steam catapult was out of the question, this would be needed for the F35C - an EMALS or electromagnetic arrester & launch system was designed by BaE & but not considered due to cost by the Labour Govt so the F35C was scratched from the programme - much to the joy of the RAF who could not bear to see the Fleet Air Ar EVER take ownership of a new fixed wing fighter aircraft again.
      The F35B is in actual fact a bespoke version which essentially replaces the AV8 Harrier used by the USMC.
      The whole project may look nice but in reality the ship wil never be able to operate without support from coalition partners - either the USA or perhaps the French.
      Final point.
      Since the end of the Second World War which service has the most Air to Air kills is it:
      A - The Royal Air Force
      B - The Fleet Air Arm
      Answer - ?

      So what is a real carrier then? The QE class can up to 50 fixed wing F-35's, will embark newly upgraded Merlin helicopters with early warning and control domes, Apache gunships, Wildcat anti ship/sub helicopters and Chinook's. They could even very well deploy drones in the near future. They also have the second highest sortie rate of any world carrier only behind the US.

    • @nottmfunguy

      The QE class is designed so it can accommodate electromagnetic catapults and arrestor recovery systems for future refitting. EMALS is now what the US uses in its latest carriers. So does that mean it becomes a real aircraft carrier if fitted? Also I take it the WW2 weren't real aircraft carriers either?
