    I switched over to pretty much exclusively fishing kayak tourneys a couple years ago. When I first did, missing fish and having fish jump off was a huge problem for me. Finally I realized it was the way i was fishing. As opposed to standing on a boat deck 2-3ft off the water where you have lots of room and leverage to get solid hooksets; I was fishing mostly sitting about 3-6 inches off the water. I soon came to realize that the heavy big rods i'd use standing in a boat just were not going to cut it. The huge thick gaff like hooks from boat were not going to cut it either. I had to buy thinner, coated hooks. For texas rigs and flipping I went to the g-finnesse hybrid worm hooks. I also changed the baits i was using. Instead of using jigs and chatterbaits with big, thick hooks, I started trying to find ones with thinner, coated hooks.
    Then the rods were probably most important. Instead of using mh-h for everything, I really started using softer rods. The first ones I found that helped me a lot were phenix rods. They seemed to have actions more like jdm rods. Rods that said they were mh were actually more like a medium. Then I really started to go down the rabbit hole and mess around with megabass rods. I found the x-bites and the dark sleeper. Then later on I found the kasumi 6'11 and the siglett..... and those light rods were incredible to throw tiny little jigs like the egu dama and tiny texas rigs. But the main thing i learned was that here in the usa with bass fishing, we use way overpowered rods. When you start looking at japanese jig rods compared to american, the japanese ones are much softer, more tippy, more parabolic, etc. And I think it actually causes better hookups. The lighter, softer rods allow the fish to eat them and get hooked in the solid part of their mouths instead of a hard, fast set that barely hooks them or comes out altogether. There is a time and a place for a heavy, fast jig rod. But in most instances you can pick a jig with a thinner hook and then cut some strands out of the weed guard, and youre good to go. One of my favorite jigs to use is the "bad little dude" from greenfish. It has a good, wide hook, but it is also pretty thin. The hookup ratio is very good on it. Of course then I also love the keitech jigs and the molix nano jigs, etc.

      I like the phenix recon elite, it's a mh but feels more like a m. It's my sinko or gambler ace setup. I also use it as my follow up when I'm throwing a frog! Great post btw 💪

    • @catchofthedave8681
      @catchofthedave8681 3 місяці тому +1

      Thanks!! Yeah i havent tried the recon elite, but judging by their other rods they are typically a bit lighter than “normal” actions, but I like them. I love the M1 rods. They feel good in hand, they incredibly light, sensitive, etc. I have 4 of them, the 7’2 mh id my go to, i have 2. But i also have the 6’9 mL caster rod. I use it for jerkbaits and bfs type stuff, its a true gem of a rod. And i have the big swimbait one, i throw a-rigs on it and glides, etc. I also have the feather in spinning rod, and i have another kind too, a couple of them, name eludes me now…the green one.
      I havent tried the recon but i will at some point im sure.

    There's so many options and there's definitely overlap in characteristics. I like the F5-68X Blade for swimjigs, spinner / chatter baits. The F5.5-72X X-Bites and F6.5-67X Tachyon Shaft are both great bottom contact rods in my view. The tach shaft with a strike king finese jig and small craw trailer has been highly effective. The X-Bites while softer / slower is a good choice I think since it's perfect for most all bottom contact baits (worms, jigs, wobble head, etc). Both rods transmit vibration very well despite the differences in tip action. My 21 year old boat can only store a few rods in the 7'5" zone so these worked out perfectly for my rig.

    That tach shaft is absolute badassery for close quarters pitching/flipping. I live in the 1/2oz to 3/4oz jig world with this rod and it’s phenomenal. Just like he said, fast paced, close quarters, high impact, boat flipping… all what the tach shaft does phenomenally AND it’s incredibly sensitive. Transmits even the faintest bites.

    • @MrPhoenix1800
      @MrPhoenix1800 5 місяців тому

      Cody as Ben mentioned the dark sleeper rod wants to be under load, a soft plastic jerk bait has slack line in it I would throw that on a faster action rod to feel that slack line bite. IMO

      I'm certainly no expert but you might look into the MB F6-66X Killer Code as a versatile top water rod that also works great for open water swimbaits (keitech underspins, etc), Flukes, or even big worms. It's spec'd out with a medium tip action but it's still plenty fast enough to walk the dog or chug a frog or big popper. And it loads super nice on hook set. It's a bit shorter than what most people probably use, but I run 20 pound on it and still casts very well. I hear great things about the Shimano ExPride line for top water too.

      @@caseysaunders2137 thank you for the insight! What are your thoughts on the blade as a short jig and t rig rod ? If you read some of the Japanese description for the blade it says it is good for jigs. I am looking for a shorter bottom contact rod for lighter jigs and t rigs.

      @@thehookuptackle_usa I love the 110 Stick I bought from you guys for my Megabass Jerkbait's. I assumed it would do well with topwater baits but haven't tried. You're saying you use it with jig's too (bottom contact)?

      Bottom Contact and BMG are similar. You would have to decide between those two. FMJ is fast, so performs totally different. Bottom Contact is slower like the BMG - needs bend and is amazing for dragging.

      I have the original and it looks like it has a little less tip length than the BMG here but more than the FMJ

    FMJ vs NRX+894c jwr which one?

    • @thehookuptackle_usa
      @thehookuptackle_usa  Рік тому

      Depends what’s most important to you. NRX will win in sensitivity, FMJ will win in all other aspects. I use the FMJ now over the 894 because it’s way more comfortable and fun - but the NRX will squeeze every possible shred of sensitivity out.
