I've played piano for 10 years, and I have been a organist/pianist for my church for the last two years. In order to play, I've spent a ton of time practicing and got pretty good at sight reading hymns. After watching this video, I tried it and immediately was able to play countless hymns better and faster. I wish I had known about this sooner!!! I have tried this on other sheet music that I have and the results have been remarkable!!

I am 77, a retiree Missionary priest, beginning to get a bit forgetful, so a month ago I began to take online music lessons but found it a bit challenging. Just thinking of giving up, I listened to this video which has extraordinarily revived my drooping spirit. Thank you so much. You have me as a committed student.

Zach, you are truly a Godsend!!! I have up to Grade 3 formal training and had to give up due to financial strain at the time. But after all these years, I am learning to play the piano again. Better late than never. I love the piano! As a young person, my mom's dear friend moved away and she gave to me this book of hymns and recently I have tried to work out what these notes or chords are, but without any method of how to go about it. Today I watched your video, and well, I can only say that God has seen the desire of my heart. I am ecstatic about what you teach here. Bless you in abundance. Please do not stop what you are doing. I am a senior citizen now but still willing and able to learn and determined to get where I need to be to become a worship music pianist, just to play for our little Bible Study Group. Praise The Lord ! Thank you soo ...ooo ooo much. GOD BLESS YOU YOUNG MAN !

The richness of the original harmonies, are infinitely better than the second attempt.

When sung by voice in four part harmony, the original harmonies are far superior. However, the piano is meant to complement the voice, and an interesting sound is appropriate.

I was taught to play the songs exactly how it’s written for this reason I gave up on piano. Then I found the wonderful world of lead sheets which got me back into it again. Now in same way with lead sheet style as your showing here makes me want to get my hymnal out and look at my favorite church hymns

Thank you for sharing this!! I get overwhelmed looking in the hymnal and discouraged that I'll never be able to play anything out of it. I've noticed at church that the pianist was not playing the music note for note and that confused me even more. But now I get it. Thank you!

In art there Is no wrong! One plays what one feels.
The second style is the one I would play for my personal taste or for a solo. For a congregation I'd play a combination of the two styles. My Dad was an excellent musician so I hear every minimal changes in harmony. What I really want to learn from you is interesting rythms and hand coordination. I've played the piano for almost 60 years. An ancient and I still can't play some interesting new rythms. Thanks for being generous.

I love the way you teach! Unlike most of the other videos that i've watched, you actually show visually what you are referring. You take time to display charts and circle the notes to reference what you are talking about. There are just too many videos where they just pound on the keyboard and talk about how it sounds correct without actually showing how.

I have been playing piano for over 15 years, and when you said two versions I immediately knew that you were going to do an “as written” vs some rolling chord patterns.
The beginner piano player definitely will be impressed by the second version, but I think it really depends on the song/hymn. Certain songs don’t require rolling chords and arpeggios to be interesting. Simple notes usually sound better in my opinion.

Version B is pleasant to the ear but should wait until after sight reading is taught. Maybe older persons should learn version B but every child should learn to read sheet music. The perfect musician masters both sight reading and ear playing. That is the road I am purposefully trodding.

      CHURCH MUSIC is retarded...
      KEYS are just PITCH....
all the circle of 5th dose is help you play the Major scale in 12 different PITCH...
just becuase you term it KEY..dosnt change FACTS.
On top of that...there's only 7 notes in the MAJOR scale...
      Dont make it complicated . There's only 7 modes..hence only 7 chords.
Then they tell you...to only learn 6 chords out of 7 ..ffs
which only leaves you with 3 Major...3 min chord.
      In a nutshelll....only 2 damn chords...in different PITCH.
      Dont complicated it...god damn it..
Learn the MODES..it'll give you INTERVAL..i dont give a rats ass
how you stack it above or below the root.
So...If I play maj7 add #11....it's mostly the IV chord or LYDIAN
but keep it SIMPLE...Use the LOWEST NOTE as the ROOT
CHORD are just EVERY OTHER NOTE...No matter the scale.
      Version B..of course...
I play the guitar...You'd bitch slap me if I just STUM, Stumm, Strummm
      all night long.lmao
So why would you do it on a piano or any other instruments?????
I dont play the guitar like that...I use different strumming patterns
      Picking pattern....Mix/blend picking and strumming.
I get BORED of the playing only notes from the Major scale...
and using only 2 different chords...
I play other scales..other chords....at different intervals within
the CHROMATIC SCALE....becuase all 12 notes WORK
      such as this movement
      C Maj..F min Ab Maj G7 into C Maj...Db dim Eb dim E Maj
      Then descend
      E Maj6, D maj6, C Maj6, B Maj6 into E Maj..
      E Maj F Maj G Maj into C min,
      Eb Maj, Ab Maj add11, G 7 into C MAJOR.lol
IT"S STUPID EASY to PLAY on the GUITAR and sounds PRETTY.
Even some guitar players will get hung up on PLAYING only the
      MAJOR scale ( 7 notes)
That wasnt scarry..even Damn classical players say dont play maj6
      or A melodic min descending.lmao

Nice technique. If you have access to the guitar version, all the work is done--chords are printed right over the staff.and there is a single-note melody line. Also, the whole song usually fits on one page, because there is no bass staff. The only hiccup would be that the guitar version might be in a different key. But if the choir can sing in B-flat, they can sing in C.

Zach, like many here, I have watched several of your videos. But it wasn’t enough and I decided to purchase your teaching method and I just love it. I haven’t enjoyed practice drills, etc., but I do now because of the way you fashioned it. Years ago my mother-in-law was the practice pianist for an opera company and we would have discussions on sheet music. Because I wanted to learn jazz, she still insisted that I play just the notes on the page! I think jazz players would laugh at that, don’t you think? I love Church songs and for the most part I can’t play them well. What you give here helps. I’m not paid for this, but if you have the extra money, you would do yourself a service by purchasing the program he sells. I believe he has a 30 day guarantee. I’m only sorry I didn’t do this a few years ago as my time is short (June 5, 2021 I’m 77 years old). Amen.

Version A has the majestic block chord effect like the sarabands of classical music. Version B where you have broken the chords into arpeggios has the sweeter more tinkling effect of waterfalls. Hence they are both fine and left up to the artistic vision of the player. Or a particular occasion...by the way you could add one or two trills or mordant for effect. Nice job and keep up the good work!

    • @zeusincoming282
      @zeusincoming282 4 роки тому +2

Mood can affect which sounds better. I like them both, but there are times I dont feel arpeggios, and there are times where the block method is not appealing to me. Many times it depends on the mood. I notice that most traditional versions of a song use the block method whereas contemporary versions of the same song may use Arpeggios. By the way, I call basic hymn reading where you use solid chord the "block method",

Dear Zach: This is GREAT!! For over a year, I've been trying to learn from my Baptist hymnal, but what are all those notes? I finally figured out: the sheet music is for the singers, not the pianist. Your left hand patterns make so much sense! Ok, I get that the version 2 is easier, and I like the chord arpeggios, but I also like version 1. I will learn your version 2 first, then go back and tackle version 1. I strongly recommend that anyone learn version 2 first; there is a lot of music theory in that lesson! And, you can play it in church. Then go back several weeks later and learn version 1. What do you think? Bernie.

This is such a great system! I can't wait to try it tonight. I recently started playing hymns for more sight-reading practice but have found many of them to be very difficult with so many chords and sharps and flats.

As a long time hymn book musician I have to say approve however there are times when the original as written hymn reigns supreme such as Great is thy Faithulness. And Holy Holy Holy. I think this is pretty cool. Though

Thank you Zach for your videos and particulary this video you have patiently analyse the sheet to get the chords.
I have been playing classical/folk guitar over 50 years, I understand guitar chords usually using the first chord in every bar. What I know is, the notes written on music sheet is for SATB singers (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass), if the pianist plays exact notes according to the sheet, the piano sounds no different to the choir sings. Moreover, it is too easy to make mistakes when our LH fingers move all the time.

“Church hymns are slow moving.” Umm have you ever seen a red back church hymnal? In the south we sing like we are going to a fire. Depends on the hymn I guess

    • @zeusincoming282

Well, I was going to say, You have Traditional hymns and you have contemporary hymns, but either or can be slow or upbeat. Many hymns done with a 3/4 or 6/8 timing will be upbeat most times.Think "Deep in the heart of the Shephard" .

I have my own notebook type Red Back Hymnal. Which I've had and used many times over 40 years. You probably know the actual name is "Church Hymnal" produced by the Church of God by their printing house "Pathway Press". And affectionately called the Red Back. Certainly, some hymns are slow and sacred while others are upbeat hand clapping toe tapping songs. You're right, in the South we sing them fast! Lol.

This how piano should be thought to adults. I had over a year of lesson that showed me nothing, I already knew music theory and how to read music All they could seem to teach was endless scales. at 61 my clock is winding down I don't have time to spend years to learn to play. I am not looking to be a pro at playing but to at lest be able to play real music this got me playing as soon as my finger hit the keys.

I know of what you are mentioning as I had played them 40 years ago with guitars on right chords but now now I am in intermediate level in piano, so I would like to know to play exactly notes in the hymns with right fingering position, then I would put some jazz blushes In it. Huge appreciations to your coaching any way.

I think i have a faster way to know the scale, without the cheat sheet. flats you just the count fabulous bead. fbead. 1 flat is (f only f is f major,) the rest are flat majors, )2 flats is bflat, 3 flats is e flat, 3 flats are eflat major, 4 flats are a flat major, 5 flats are d flat major. so for example this song had two flats, and we are counting from f,b so it is in b flat major. sharps you reverse it, gdaeb. one sharp is g major, two sharps is d major, three sharps is a major and so on.4 sharps is e major and 5 sharps is b major.

Version A is better (and must, I think) when we play it on organ, not on piano.... and we must use version A when we are accompaning a choir.... but when we are accompaning a one-voiced choir, so it doesn't matter to use the version B.....
So, using these version depends on the choir we accompanied.....
That's all what I'm thinking of.....

    A. sounds better to me for congregation style. When you playing for congregation Ad Lib the hymn it will sound better for A. You can throw runs in between some of your notes and play octaves style without loosing the melody. B sounds like you just chording it out and playing for a special or a offertory.

    • @zeusincoming282
      @zeusincoming282 4 роки тому +1

I agree, when playing for congregational singing, maybe its best to play the standard version then play the arpeggio version for reflective purposes afterwards, or like for offertory like you said.

Soulkeys I think he was showing off a bit to drive home to point that his method is easy conceptually, but has the ability to sound very complex. You could use his method to make a much straighter rhythmic version to fit the style you’re talking about, his method is really more about how to learn songs without being able to read everything, than exactly what style the music should be.

    • @menriquez89
