Great concept! As someone coming back to the double bass via bass guitar (like yourself), and now EUB, this is invaluable. I’ve never been able to get to grips with thumb position, but this has me moving in the right direction. Many thanks, Hervé!!
Wow! The light bulb just came on for this fifty year electric bass player, who made the plunge toward double bass less two years ago. Time to pay some more dues. Subscribing here will definitely help. 👍🏿
I have been playing electric bass for 52 years, and upright seriously for 1, not seriously for about 6, and I often wonder why use the thumb position at all when I can play at the octave with my 4 fingers ? But, you just explained how to approach thumb position playing much simpler...thank you. I'm going to practice "I could write a book" !
That is a killer trick, the way you explain it is so clear and simple, I have been navigating on the thumb posiition for nearly two weeks now and this makes the practice less painfull, thanks so much.
I want to thank you for all the effort you make in each video ,, you show a lot of affection and respect towards the public and also towards your instrument ,, I also wanted to ask you if I could buy some transcripts of solos that you have ,, thank you.
I've been trying to straighten out some fingerings for major scales in thumb position outside of the usual 4th position/harmonic position. This is super helpful, thanks.
Thank you for the question. I am not sure myself. I saw that I have this joint collapsing even in other (non thumb) positions. I'll have to ask some classically trained professionals...

Thanks! There are different approaches to the thumb position, but when you come from the electric bass, this method is really helpful I think.

Trying to learn/understand Thumb position
I noticed you collapse the first joint of your index finger, isn't that something you should avoid? Thanks.
Thank you for the question. I am not sure myself. I saw that I have this joint collapsing even in other (non thumb) positions. I'll have to ask some classically trained professionals...
Solid concept, stealing ;)
