DABO! What and How Do You Play?

- Dabo is the spinning wheel game played on Deep Space Nine and created by the Ferengi. It sees frequent use on many locations where they have a presence and is a popular pastime of many, where you can win or lose large amounts of gold pressed latinum.
Where does Starfleet get its latinum anyway?

As someone who doesn't gamble in his homeland, but will gleefully waste time at a low stakes roulette table when on vacation, the existence of Dabo makes perfect sense. It has everything, things to shout, overly complicated betting mechanisms, spinny shiny things, professional distractors; perfections!
It is the most extreme version of everything that casinos use to take your money away. No wonder the Ferengi invented it.
The Ferengi Game I always wanted to know how to play was Tongo
Based on what was shown probably like Ferengi poker or something
tongogame.com/?page_id=2
Here's a close approximation at least.
With a touch of wheel of fortune.
Oi...vey
Je..
I mean ferengi.
I think it’s just poker
In short, it appears that Dabo is a combination of Roulette and a slot machine.
Lol I just said that to myself!
Well it's more: exactly like slot machines but the wheels are exposed.
@@amadexi except slot machines don't have multiple people placing bets on specific symbols (well none that ive ever seen do) so thats where the roulette aspect comes into it.
thanks, saved me a whole 6 minutes
@@brefasdra I don't think you place bets on specific symbols on the version of dabo that is presented, rather you pick the slice on which you'll check the symbols.
So to be more precise, it's like an array of slot machines that share the same wheels.
Betting on different radius is like betting on different slot machines.
The version in STO's a variant by Quark called Dabo with Leeta, its two main gimmicks being DS9, and a hologram of Leeta because apparently less people hit the dabo tables after she left the station to be the First Lady of Ferenginar.
It's amusing when Leeta returns to DS9
Is that like Morn's hologram when he is away on business, or faking his death.
@@pauljackson3491 I guess, if the Morn hologram was a product being sold all over local space.
@@BlueSatoshi You can get holo-him in your Fed Fleet starbase.
You think he would get more people to hit the tables, if he had a hologram of the Mirror Universe Leeta
I like how the payback rate seems to be as low as possible while still seeming reasonable. I can just imagine a Ferengi doing lots of rigorous testing & research to figure out the absolute minimum a game would need to pay out to keep people playing while raking in as much Latinum as possible. Then promptly licensing out that game because that’s where the real moneys at.
A game where you don’t get stabbed in the heart if a fight breaks out.
Yes, a boring game.
... or see Nausicaans around them. =)
unless you're playing with Nausicaans
PLAY DAMJAT, HUMAN?!
Picard warned his friend that Nausicans anger easily when they lose. Which is super racist against Nausicans. Spaaaace racism
There are a lot of Star Trek channels and I really enjoy yours above the rest. You make a fantastic effort for quality content and have a great appreciation of Star Trek. Thanks for the channel :)
I agree, this is a top notch Star Trek channel. Rick is definitely a fan who knows Star Trek. I've never watched a video on this channel that I didn't enjoy. Live Long and Prosper 🖖
“Oh wow, you’re doing great”
Shut up holo-Leela and give me my gold pressed latinum so I can continue Star Trekking across the universe 🤣
Boldly going forward ‘cause we can’t find reverse.
"hey! hands off the hologram!"
Would be cool to see more of these videos on some of the fictional games of the 23rd century
I agree
Remember when the Enterprise was almost destroyed because everyone got really into a VR ring toss game?
How to play Dabo,
step 1. you put in energy credit
step 2. ???
step 3. get the Gold pressed Latinum you need to complete the daily endeavor.
Exactly.
I won nearly 1 Billion GPL on one spin, too bad for Quark.
@@nailboard6492 Now, how did you spend all of those? Holo emitter? Party lights? Clubwears?
Really the only reason I play it. Now if there was more I could use my Latinum on I'd probably play it more.
@@cmdrtianyilin8107 I got all the club wear, the trophies (all the things you can only have one of) and then I always make sure I have a 100 stack of Disco balls at all times (in case of party emergencies) and I go restock on holo emitters when I need to. I spend a lot of time goofing around so the GPL is useful for me haha
Pan to Hale getting his clock cleaned by Nog in Tongo.
A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.
Like all games in an casino. So it's not that strange.
"i see what you did there, Joshua"
Just too bad even the VI in games today can't hold a torch the WOPR in that movie.
" but hey thats what I do"
The saying of a man who knows his craft
Dabo!
I'd have expected a system of complicated bets to make the punter think that they have control. But this works too. Fascinating, mindless, fun.
Dabo!!! I won.... thanks for the video. UA-cam is my only way of learning many things for STO. I definitely want to get up to speed on dabo before using my small amount of GPL. Mainly need it for endeavours.
I really love watching your videos. been a long time fan of all things star trek since the 80's. and now thanks to you I have these amazing info videos to watch. Keep it up.
While it looks like Roulette at first (and sometimes even invovles a ball), is it more a multiplayer Slot Machine:
You have three randomized wheels (with the inner wheel being ocassionally repalced by a roulette type setup).
How those wheels match up to a window (fixed in slot machines, your bets number in daboo) decides your payout.
really awesome to learn more of this game dabo from startrek
First you get the latinum, then you get the power, once you get the power you get the dabo girl.
In the episode Move Along Home it showed Dabo used balls with retraceable pins and how many were out help determine how much you won. Just two pins was bad.
Adding in more elements of Roulette.
Thank you for this video! I’m currently on my n-teenth run through of DS9 and have always wondered how that game is played. It finally bugged me enough this time around to actually look it up 😂. From what I gleaned from the video, it’s basically if a roulette table and a slot machine had a love child AND it actually looks like a lot of fun! Makes me want to throw a Star Trek themed casino party once this dreaded pandemic is finally over!
A video on Tongo would be quite interesting imo, if there's enough material on how it's played?
DABO!
DABO?
Is it a coincidence that “Dabo” means “I shall give” in Latin ? Why is Dabo so called ?
Good video. Next video explain Tongo.
So now we need insights on Tongo and Dom-Jott, maybe also 3D chess. I'd say Kal-toh counts too, though I don't think the Vulcans really consider that a "game" by the traditional definition.
Hell, throw in Pazaak/sabacc from Star Wars as well. I'm not sure about TOR (the MMO), but KoTOR has a playable version of Pazaak in it. As far as sabacc goes, you see it played in the Solo movie where it looks a lot like space poker, but I think there are probably better depictions throughout the original expanded universe. Oh, and for the record, Han's dice were never more than a background element, no matter what Disney's been trying to tell people for the past three or so years.
Sabacc is more like space Blackjack. It cropped up several times, including famously being the way Dessel was set on the path of eventually becoming Darth Bane. (He won big in a Sabacc game thanks to a flash of insight/subconscious use of the Force, and his opponent, a republic naval ensign, tried to have him killed and got a vibro-blade through the chest for his trouble, requiring Dessel to be smuggled off-world to join the Sith army.
In the books it is explained a little bit. Basically blackjack, trying to get a hand without going over. You reduce your bet and "freeze" part of your hand, or keep raising and letting the hand roll over from your opponents hands at random. Once everyone "freezes" or calls when it is only 2 they check and win. You can win a little on a frozen hand, but can really win big on a live hand.
@@littlekong7685 And there's the famous Idiots Array.
I always wanted to know how to play this! Awesome.
I've always wanted to know how this game was played! Nice!
hope to see future videos on Quasar and Sabacc and other sci-fi gambling games
Now I wanna see a video on Tongo, cause that does look like fun. For a ferengi game. :p
Well, Dabo is a game in Jadzia Dax's Deep Space Nine show. But she was at Quark to drink and Dr. Bashir was talking to Jadzia about what happens to the wormhole when she and Sisko are traveling through the wormhole in the first episode on January 3 of this year and next year but It'll repeat the same year, same show, same season over and over again. But last year in 2020, it change into the 1993 era when the time traveler Alex Manning AKA Megan Ward who came here in 2019 about 2 years ago for the first year to take all the generation away. But all years is 1993 when it repeating the same year. In November of last year it change back in 1992 and it'll change into 1993 about January of last year and this year.
I would much enjoy seeing more episodes on the fictional games of Trek!
Stay well out there everybody, and Jesus Christ be with you friends.😊
Could you please do a video about Tongo , you rock
You know, one game that could be interesting would be Chula, from DS9: Move Along Home. Wouldn't really work as a board game due to the whole "two games at the same time" thing, but maybe as a variant of an escape room?
That is a great episode! Probably could work it as a board game/TTRPG combo.
@@williamberry4597
The reason why my mind immediately went to "Board Game + Escape Room" is because you could almost perfectly emulate the game experience that way. The "inside" part of the game is pretty much an escape room of sorts.
I wouldn't say a dabo wheel is rigged.
Rather it comes with special features built in by the designer. Its the owners option to enable those features or leave them in active. Other species may choose to describe those features as the game being "Rigged". But a Ferengi Lawyer/Linguist will show you that the fin print says other wise.
the rules sounds like captain kirk made up the rules on a whim while on that 1920s gangster planet
If you don't know how to play Dabo... it's the only game you can kind of fake it by just randomly shouting the name of the game
It works for Yahtzee, if you don't particularly care about being good at Yahtzee.
Same for Stratego, assuming the commercials didn't lie.
Kinda like a roulette yahtzee fusion. Neat.
Interesting, I always assumed it was just hey we took a roulette wheel, gave it 3 rings instead of 1. With each ring continuing the number, since they're bigger rings you'd get a grouping like 20-30-50, with a betting multiplier depending on the ring you went with. Or if crazy, bet on 3 different, and get all 3 and get "Tripled out dabo" ... I think that's what Quark said to Riker... But a multiplayer slot machine in the shape of roulette's good too.
Would love to see him make a video about the other Ferengi game that the main character play sometimes in DS9. Cant remember what its called but they wager money and try and buy a business or something like that
Are you going to cover Tongo and Domjot?
I want to know how to play the other Ferengi game, Tongo
This is a cool game. They should put it in casinos. I think people would love it.
Interesting. This seems closer to how a slot machine works (in terms of winning/payout) rather than roulette.
So basically Dabo is a combination of roulette, and a slot machine. The actual gameplay is like roulette. With an employee having to Watch and deal out the payments. However, the value of your winnings has a similar system to a slot machine. With getting a set of three symbols, and three matching being a higher payout generally.
It's probably like poker where you can play with different rulesets.
Fun fact, in STO ther are actually only 15 configurations that would allow for the best payout (400,000%). You can find them listed on the wiki.
Example: 10,1,21
Been playing sto for years and only played dabo once. Won over 4 million gpl and never looked back lol
Excellent. But will you do a video on 'Move Along Home'? :D
I wonder how special Quark's table is. That thing is still undetected.
I get plenty of GPL from Admiralty assignments, but there doesn't seem to be a lot to spend it on in-game; A few trinkets, but nothing of use, the odd duty officer Trade assignment, and of course, Dabo. Which seems to exist to be a GPL sink, depending on your luck. So I don't actually play it, like, at all, except the Drozana mission where it was part of the plot.
I Hope you do a Tongo video :3
the House ALWAYS wins.
akso if they didnt want it to be focused on so much they shouldn't have made the Episode Move along Home (or the just shouldn't have have made that episode at all)
That was one of the worst DS9 episodes ever. Season 1 in general was not up to standard, in my opinion. From Season 2 to Season 7 , I thought that DS9 became one of the best Trek shows ever.
In other words - it's a high-class slot machine. Or, one of those banks of linked machines. ... I'd assume that the pay-outs and distribution of symbols can vary from one table to another, and that there are various house rules/side-bets from one establishment (or even world) to another.
Please do one on Tongo as it looks such a fun game
On its way!
DABO!!!!!!! 🖖🏻😎🖖🏻
In Star Trek online I wish it was possible to earn energy credits by playing dabo instead of just gold pressed latinum
Named after Dabo Swinney, of course.
Two pinch showing! Tough luck.
Thanks for the nice vid (as always)! I’m curious: will you dedicate another to Tongo?
Dabo!!✌🖖
Please can you do a doctor who video agent thank you for your time please keep up the amazing work and live long and prosper
Roulette is the third best odds at a casino
you should do one on dilithium and other currency in sto
Interesting!
Next domjot and tongo? 😅
I wasted a LOT of hours at the STO Dabo tables. Good times...
Roulette but you get to pick 3 different numbers,in STO anyway.
Just curious, why do you use the past tense (was) when talking about things in the future?
Can’t tell me what to do, Ric. I’m putting down 10k on the Minnesota Vikings not violently self destructing in the playoffs.
Assuming they make it
Tongo next?
I wonder does the Vegas strip still exist on Earth in Trek? And I want to know what Damjot was. Another game that Sisko was horrified when he learned his son was a real hustler at the game.
Dom-jot is basically pinball billiards. We see it in TNG: Tapestry. Honestly I have no idea why Sisko had a problem with Jake playing it unless he was also betting on the games, although it could also mean he was going to some shady places to play it.
It's pool in a puddle of water
@@VestedUTuber I was going to say, Sisko grew up in an "old" part of Earth where the hustle culture was still a thing. I am sure he did some playing in his youth and saw some angry people get into messes when they thought someone was cheating.
@@littlekong7685 we hear hustling was a thing at Sandrine’s in Marseille so I don’t see why it wouldn’t be in New Orleans; AKA I agree with you
I’ve always been curious if there’s any extra material on the “craps” game you sometimes see them playing in the background at Quark’s. Never had any dialogue dedicated to them but they had some noticeable sound effects at least.
You said "....in this version of Dabo..." ...... what other versions with rules and payout structures exist? It isn't in the media or shows besides ST:Online, and rules and payout structure are never mentioned in any other media.
Can you go over the Cardassian chess like game? Korra ? The real rules are online
Is this the Game Riker was talking about when Quark said how it was easy to remember the guy who won the most at his bar and Riker said u didnt have enough to cover my winnings and Quark said I gave u a Voucher and Riker said u can spend Latinum anywhere but the Vouchers could only be used at Quarks
i play dabo all the time in sto and yep the conversion rate is redickuls but i did some how made over a million on one charater and bout all the lattium tropys and some holo ship emitters wish there was more to but with lattium on sto
I prefer the skill and sportsmanship of Domjat, hu-man
Are there any rules on how to play FizzBin? 🤔♠️♥️♦️♣️🃏
Asking a friend...
Didn't the game in the show also have these little spikey things they'd throw into the spinning wheels?
So it's a blend of roulette and slots?
So it's like roulette combined with the rigablity of slots
What about the cards? There are supposed to be two decks of cards, one rectangular and one circular.
play dabo hooman! :O
Nect Tongo pls... i love poker and it looks like poker...space poker...
DABO!!
I wanna play
Nice of you to worry about the Dabo addiction of your viewers. 🤣🖖
You are probably a bit too lax on following the rules of acquisition though.
Please STO bring in poker for your bridge crew to play in the lounge.
oh right. it's Tongo that lets a player aquire or sell, and other market terms.
I will admit to my first STO Capt having a bit of a Dabo addiction... 😁 after 4 years I've amassed a GPL fortune e of 4.5 million bars. And I have nothing to spend it on... why cant I buy a moon of my own like Quark??? 😂
Right? GPL is the forgotten currency
Put random numbers in,bet 3 mill EC and then get a chance to win big money, then cheap quark out of latinum for a very low price
Fizzbin next?
Just broke 10 million GP Latinum. Must have spent 20 million EC to get there. lol DaBO!!!!
Now, how about the game the cast was stuck in in the best DS9 episode of all time, Move Along Home?
Asking the real questions here
Tongo looks like more fun.
my friend snu in sto, is trying to get up to a billion gpl. She has just passed 320 million gpl lol
Too bad there's nothing you can use it for
@@kevinramsey417 I know, she is trying to see if there is an accolade for it
Isn't gold pressed latinum a type of alloy?
Yeah, I'm sitting on 12 Million GPL and cannot find a single way to spend, apart from buying subspace party thingy and every single holo emitter possible.
