After years of frustration and hundreds of dollars replace a water pump, power steering pump, alternator, etc. I came across this video and decided to give it a shot. I changed out 2 pulleys, smooth and grooved (together less than $20), and couldn't believe it. Now my engine is quiet. I cannot thank you enough!!!!!!!!!
I changed the power steering pump. Had my eye on the alternator next. Going to try replacing the idler pulley. The whining noise matches mine the most. Hope it fixes it. I even thought it could be my transmission whining😢
Hint. Place one of those magnetic trays under the pulley or whatever you are working on and if you drop the bolt or nut the tray has a good chance of catching it and stop it from dropping into an difficult to get to or inaccessible place.
Man Jimmy... You Sir May have just ended my most aggravating thing about my 2005 Tahoe. Even though the sound wasn’t horrible to anyone else in the vehicle, it annoyed the sh*t outta me. Found my new weekend project!!
Thank you for posting this video! Man I have had that noise on my 2005 silverado for months! I thought it was alternator, power steering....I could not figure it out. I came across your video and I was like oh SH*t can it be that simple? It sure was. My truck is nice and quiet again and I actually sat in it for 15 minutes running enjoying the silence. Only a $22 fix. Thanks again!
I have a 2000 Astro...120,000 miles, that's actually low for the type engine...Flushed the power steering system, same noise...Then I realized the noise didn't get louder turning the steering wheel turning and suspect the idler pulley just like in this case...This video convinced me to try it before a power steering replacement...Think how dumb I'd feel then...The noise is the same, I only hope the problem is too...Thanks for doing this video...You may have saved me a lot of time and headache...I'll be back to let everyone know.
My 07 trailblazer whining noise was getting on my nerves! Found your video and I even follow the link for the pulley , installed in less than 5 min. and problem fixed! Thank you !
GOODNESS. That sound has very recently started on my Trailblazer and MY HEART SANK. I am thrilled to find this video. Headed out now, Jimmy, to buy a new idler pulley!! Thank you thank you thank you!!
Good stuff. I will recommend a mechanic's stethoscope, about $10 at parts store, which will greatly help you pinpoint the source of a noise. Your Envoy is pretty crowded and you'd have to be VERY careful when using it. I diagnosed a bad power steering pump in my 1993 Jeep Wrangler that way.
I have had this same noise for a couple of months on my 2000 Jimmy. I noticed that the noise would go away at times depending on if it was damp outside or dry. The whine also goes in sync when you accelerate. I figured it was not the transmission, and knew it wasn't the power steering. A little frustrated today after driving because things have been continuously breaking and I'm thinking ,now what? I decided to google this and came up with your video. It sounds exactly the same. I had changed this Idler pulley with a Duralast a few years ago because of a different sound that was more like a bad bearing. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this. You saved me so much trouble shooting and money. I was certain that it was the power steering pump. I luckily came across your post, bought the idler pulley and my son put it on. Problem fixed!! Thanks again.
Video is spot on! I ordered a "Gates" made pully from Amazon and swapped it out and tah daaaaah...no more noise! Now I can go watch the LSU vs Texas game.....GEAUX TIGERS!!! That's right I said it !
You can remove the seal of the bearing carefully with a small pick and clean out the factory grease and use good grease of your choice. I prefer Amsoil but it works so much better!
1. Ignition switch Only cost about 12dollars & only takes 15-20mins dealing with only 3or4 strews most common problem when people first crank their car because they start sticking overtime and causes the vehicle to start whining. Also depends on your vehicle what your price will be. Then I would follow this video if that don't solve your problem great clip by the way.
I have a 2019 Chevy Tahoe, bought in June 2019. Has been making that same noise a couple of days after I drove off the dealer lot. Sooo annoying. I kept giving it time being that I had my previous 2007 Tahoe for 12 yrs and thought it was due to newness, ugh!!. Never have been happy with this new Tahoe. What a 60K+ shame!!! Thank you sooo much. Now I can quit trying to duplicate this noise and just play this video when I take it in and talk to the service advisor. I will see what they tell me it is first though.
I had the same problem with my Chrysler van. It started making that whining noise accompanied by an obvious bearing noise at around 180k+ miles. So I got under the hood and replaced the pulley, and let me tell you, it is a very difficult job to do on these Chrysler minivans. There is very little space between the wheel well and the engine. The space was very little that I had to get a stubbier socket to fit on the idler pulley.
Posted this on Impala forum. Very sorry for the long read but I will take any help I can get! Thank you! Hello all, First time post here and first Impala (2010 LT, 3.5, Luxury package I think they called it) but I really love it. Thanks in advance for any help as I'm at a loss on this issue. I'm an almost 60 year old South Carolina kid, can do basic auto repair, and I tend to try to find a screaming deal on a 100k miles or so mid-full size American car every few years, spruce up, drive to 150-175k, and repeat. Bought this one about 6 mos ago with 100k on it and except fixing for minor stuff (blend flap actuator clicking, etc.) She has been great. Recently I noticed a substantial whine (kinda like a diesel pickup turbo whine but not as loud) and I wrote to a buddy the details: "Not throwing any codes. Whine is only in gear, no noise in park/neutral, matches rpm, thought maybe alternator, battery was 5 yr old mid price Wal-Mart so replaced but no change in noise, no noise when in park turning steering wheel, no noticeable leaks, temperature is perfect, no idiot lights, shifts perfectly, runs/drives perfectly. No other noises. Thought torque converter but it shows no symptoms of TC issues. Changed out about 6 quarts of trans fluid with correct (expensive) full synthetic trans fluid, (just pumped out and replaced) but no change in noise.". Was going to add a bottle of Bars leak high mileage trans additive but have not yet. One mechanic put a stethoscope on it and said upper idler pulley. I thought it was a stretch (zero noise in park even revving up) but I figured it could use a serpentine belt so I replaced both. No luck. I saw one post that said "No sound in neutral? Does it vary with steering? If it goes away in neutral and isn't affected by steering, its just a noisy transmission oil pump, common issue that doesn't really hurt anything.". Could that be the case? Just keep driving till something else changes? I need to drive from SC to Mississippi to visit my elderly uncle but should I trust it? (Otherwise it is 95% local driving) Breaking down between here and Tupelo MS is a bad thought. Again thanks very much for the help! I hope I can pay it back sometime!
This worked for me! Thanks. My pulley didn't really look worn, so I was kinda worried that this wasn't the issue, but I replaced it with a new one and it fixed the noise. 👍😌
Yeah had the same problem. I replaced the serpentine belt on a 2016 Chevy Colorado v6 then it developed the whine. I thought I did something wrong but it was a bad pulley as well
Thanks for the video, really, thank you for the sound clip! My wife's envoy is making the same noise. So helpful! I initially thought it was the water pump judging from where the noise was coming from. But I used a wooden dowel as a stethoscope and it does sound like it. Got me a new pulley and I'm throwing it on this weekend. Fingers crossed. Thanks again! This has be vexing me for months now.
yep. just did that on my 2003 Expedition. idler and tension pulley. just swapped them like you did. nice and quiet. only difference was mine had 300,500 miles on the original equipment. still an easy fix.
Enjoy your vids their pretty funny - just a heads up you can buy just that 6303 bearing for a fraction of the cost of the new idler pulley - so don’t toss your old pulley, just replace the bearing in it & viola you have a new “spare” pulley.
Thanks bro I was having the same annoying issues with my 03 envoy xl, I watched this video, went and bout the $20 part had it installed.. and it surely did remedy the problem. Thanks alot for the help! Man... Gotta love UA-cam
I changed mine out this morning. Did it in 30 minutes or so. It took a little longer because I needed to go to the hardware store to but some pipe (PVC tubing) for some added leverage to undo the idler pulley bolt. After that it was pretty much smooth sailing. Let me tell y'all, I am the furthest thing from being mechanically inclined, so if I can do it, so can you.
Okay, I think I’m meant to buy this Trailblazer I’m looking at. I literally searched “constant engine whine” no car specific words or anything. Your video was the second one I watched and this seems like the exact same problem! Now I just gotta figure out how to fix everything else with it…
OK, while you release belt, why didn't you check by hand the alternator bearing and power steering pump bearing and water pump bearing and compressor pulley bearing and pulley tension bearing.
Idler pulley....hvac actuators and resistor...pinched wires in loom in rear hatch chaffing and causing shorts and broken sunroof tracks and 6 disc Bose stereo that gobbled my CD's and never gave them back Other than those things..love my Trailblazer!
Same sound just started on my 08 Escalade with 300k. I can see the tensioner pulley wobbling so I'll replace that and if it doesn't help I'll replace the idler pulley. Thank you.
Did it fix it. I thought i had ground loop noise from after market car audio install on my jeep. I tried everything. Car audio wise at least for elimination of ground loop. Gonna try this out tomorrow
thanks for the vid. surprised you didn't use a stethoscope (or screwdriver handle to the ear) to locate the whine - could even have been the clutch release bearing (manual). PS fluid change is no harm for the age, but it could have helped locate the issue initially? cheers.
Hi, so my car has been making this whining sound, can hear it from 0 to 30mph. A lot of people think it's the power steering pump, but the ps pump is brand new and been replaced and still this sound is happening. how can I prove that it is not the ps pump? This video has given me hope.
Replaced the alternator on my 99 Tahoe today because there was a whining noise, I used a screwdriver to find the noise. It certainly seemed like the alternator was the issue, but right as I was putting the belt back on, I spun the idler by hand and the bearing was growling! UGH! Oh well, I guess its good to have a new alternator in there.
Your video is spot on. I replaced the pully today on our 2009 Trailblazer. Only problem I had was that I had to take off my winter jacket to get my hand and tool inti the tight spaces. Can you do a video on the Check Engine Light next?
This sounds exactly how my engine does after it's been warmed up for a bit. I found your video while searching for anything on engine whine in my Scion (Toyota) iQ. Interestingly, the belt/pulley layout is the same as on your engine. Thanks for the video!
I did something like this once but I caught it early on and all I did was to pull the pulley out, removed the dust cover from the wheel bearing, cleaned with gasoline and put some new full synthetic grease inside and voila, problem solved...cost of repairs;20cents or so.
Hello sir I have the same noise in my Ford mustang 2007 , I took it to a mechanic and it told me I had to change the whole transmission, but I think I just found the solution 😮
I have a 2010, GMC V6 Terrain that whines when you start it, and of course goes up when you accelerate, but is even LOUDER when you decelerate. Seems to loudest when going down a steep hill, and it downshifts. Chevy said of course it was the Power Steering (lines), others didn't know, and one person said it was the Transmission (transfer case probably). But most have said power steering. About 3 mechanics. So I think they have NO CLUE. Any ideas? Thanks.
That pulley has bearing that has cover at both sides. Those are easy to remove and replace, so you could add some Würth 5000 ptfe grease on the bearing to make it last longer since that stuff is ment for dry bearings and it really works, Ok.
I wonder how many people chasing down ground loop during car audio installs.....and like me cant find what was wrong like me.this is gonna be my issue i think. I have a jeep cherokee but im sure they all sound the same. Thanks bro. Better go hit up some car audio message boards. and just throw this as possibility out there for a fix. Crazy how it sounds just like ground loop whine.
Thank you for the video, fixed our trailblazers whining issue that most people, myself included thought was coming from the Alternator, now that my wifes car isn't making that God awful whine she no longer wants to castrate me thanks for the help lol
i have grease but not enough money for a new pulley, can i just put some fresh grease in and bring down the noise a bit until i can get a new one or will it make no difference ?
Could a turbo cause a whine similar to this? Service center claims they checked the pulleys and they think it's coming from the turbo, I am stressing as a turbo rebuild will be quite expensive.
I had similar noise and the mechanic said it was an issue with the idler pulley. Car is under warranty but have to wait 3 to 4 weeks for parts. Is it safe to continue using the car while waiting for the replacement pulley?
My 2005 toyota tundra SR5, 4.7L V8, 2WD’s transmission makes a loud howl noise upon acceleration at 20-40 mph. It gets as loud as a HORN at 55-70 mph on the freeway. Took it to the toyota dealership and they couldn’t figure it out, then basically told me, ‘hey its a sealed transmission, there is nothing we can do to repair it, so ride it out til it starts hard shifting or breaks down then spend $5,000 on a new transmission.’ Real shame just thought I’d put my truck’s story here
Definitely I'm going to check mine I changed oil atf so many things couldn't get it fixed. The problem I was the only one who could hear it and I knew the sound which it was producing before this sound was foreign
Hi, I also have this sound coming from my Camry 2007, what do you recommend i do, I have changed the auto tensioner roller bearing but the sound still persists. HELP!
I went to 3 mechanics and told them I have the exact same noises as your video shows they all said they couldn’t hear a thing and my car is in very good condition. Mine only makes this noise when it is cool down like leave it over night, when you start it next morning stepping on gas. When the car runs smoothly the noise will be gone. Will it be the same problem? I got this problem after I accidentally running on a curb😅
I have same sound issue when the AC ON seriously annoying.its hard to drive when ac is On in summers..i have hyundai petrol kappa engine and its not having idealer pully and having serpertine belt
Hey! Few thousand miles ago timing belt, water pump and idler/tensioner were replaced by the dealer, so timing belt pars should be good. What do you think about serpentine belt tensioner and alternator? Can these items make whining noise on my vehicle? It has 110K miles on it.
Hey doc i am having a problem in my trailblazer, i was hearing a noise similar to bad bearings but the wheels are fine, when actually the rear drive shaft spins, the sound comes from inside the transmission the area where connects to the transfer case when spins the drive Shaft, only the rear, the front doesn’t make any sound, the transfer case seems fine and transmission as well, bearings in the drive shaft are good too. What is that? No codes whatsoever for any parts mentioned
Thanks for the video. My 2013 TDI Passat makes the same noise but, when it makes that whining noise I can't gain any speed. do you think its the pully or its something else
I ordered the bearing, removed the pulley, tapped out the old bearing, carefully tapped in the new one, reinstalled pulley and belt. About $8, and maybe five additional minutes.
Noticed that noise a while back right B 4 the alternator went out so of course I thought alternator . New alt , Started it up & noise still there so took belt off & rolled every pulley to NO avail . Coincidentally today I checked it all again taking belt off & rolled all pulleys . Idler seemed a little , very little rough so I removed it & spun it in hand . YUP imo that's it but no where to get one near here so 4 now back on it went . However , upon re-installation I got it in a different position & the noise changed drastically but to the quiet side . So I know 4 a fact that is it ! Tomorrow 8/22/2020 I'll get a new one & fix it .
I've had the same problem with my 2008 Envoy. This only occurs occasionally after I start the car. It goes away after a few miles. Is this the same issue?
After years of frustration and hundreds of dollars replace a water pump, power steering pump, alternator, etc. I came across this video and decided to give it a shot. I changed out 2 pulleys, smooth and grooved (together less than $20), and couldn't believe it. Now my engine is quiet. I cannot thank you enough!!!!!!!!!
I changed the power steering pump. Had my eye on the alternator next. Going to try replacing the idler pulley. The whining noise matches mine the most. Hope it fixes it. I even thought it could be my transmission whining😢
So this was 100% my issue. Bought a new AC Delco replacement and done after 15 minutes or so. Thanks
I was sitting in my 2004 trailblazer when I found this. I am personally grateful
Did you just buy a new idler pulley?
Thank you !
Awesome! I love to hear that! Glad to help.

Thank you for this video. Changed the pulley on my 2008 Chevy Trailblazer and whining is gone 💥
You can remove the seal of the bearing carefully with a small pick and clean out the factory grease and use good grease of your choice. I prefer Amsoil but it works so much better!
Tell all of your friends that it’s just the supercharger. ;)
My Honda Accord has pulley whine and the CVT transmission whistles like a turbo
@@DkpProductions i do that as a common joke i make. sometimes they believe it.
LMAO! 03 Tahoe same noise. Told my wife happy birthday got you a supercharger! She's like WTF ever!
Someone crashed into my 09' jaguar xfs and totelled it 😭 I miss the supercharged whine
My yukon denali 6.2L does whine when I idle ,and that's exactly what I tell my friends and they get all excited 🤣
Thank u!!! I thought it was my power steering pump. Got it changed & it still whined. I changed the idel pulley and it stopped!!
I fixed my whining. It was my wife
Haha
How'd you fix it? Mine won't stop no matter what I trym
😁
😭😭😭
Glad you were able to get her out of the grille without damaging it.
Thank you for saving me a ton of headache!!! The noise you played was very helpful and it was the exact problem I had. Sure appreciate it!!!
1. Ignition switch

Good luck, I quit GM a few years ago and have never been happier. 😄
😂👍
Just started having this problem thought it might be a water pump, thanks man might have just saved me a lot of moneyy

Yeah had the same problem. I replaced the serpentine belt on a 2016 Chevy Colorado v6 then it developed the whine.

I changed my altenator thinking it was that.Noise was still there glad i found your video.

OK, while you release belt, why didn't you check by hand the alternator bearing and power steering pump bearing and water pump bearing and compressor pulley bearing and pulley tension bearing.

Good go but lithium grease is a better choice for these idler bearings. Same as Marine grease.
Hello sir I have the same noise in my Ford mustang 2007 , I took it to a mechanic and it told me I had to change the whole transmission, but I think I just found the solution 😮

Got the same noise issue but it goes away when ac is turned off, any idea what could be causing this??
Question: did whining noise occur from the ignition or about a minute or two after? Was it louder at first and then died down?
This video could work for the Saab 9-4x, Buick Rainier, Oldsmobile Bravada, and the Isuzu Ascender
My alero is doing it
I have the same noise in my 2008 Impala , I'm gonna try removing the belt and start the car just to make sure it's not a transmission issue. Thanks
That pulley has bearing that has cover at both sides. Those are easy to remove and replace, so you could add some Würth 5000 ptfe grease on the bearing to make it last longer since that stuff is ment for dry bearings and it really works, Ok.
Thank you for this video. Have the same problem , i thought it was the alternator.
Thank you so much I replaced the pulley also and now the noise is gone.
Awesome!!
My car has exactly the same noise, thanks for that video
Thanks for being A Professional 💜
i have grease but not enough money for a new pulley, can i just put some fresh grease in and bring down the noise a bit until i can get a new one or will it make no difference ?
Will that bad pulley eventually fail, or just whine forever?
Could a turbo cause a whine similar to this? Service center claims they checked the pulleys and they think it's coming from the turbo, I am stressing as a turbo rebuild will be quite expensive.
The Very Best UA-cam Fix Lesson. Thank Yoi!!
My car makes a whining noise only when going in reverse and I read it was the transmission filter but I doubt it, what do u think?
I had similar noise and the mechanic said it was an issue with the idler pulley. Car is under warranty but have to wait 3 to 4 weeks for parts. Is it safe to continue using the car while waiting for the replacement pulley?
Just replaced the original idler on my '07 with 138,000 on the clock. Why can't they make these to last half a million miles!
*idler pulley* issue applies to other GM cars as well
You're right. I changed the title to reflect that.
How about an old 4runner could it be the same thing?
I thought it was my transmission! Thanks dude
My 2005 toyota tundra SR5, 4.7L V8, 2WD’s transmission makes a loud howl noise upon acceleration at 20-40 mph. It gets as loud as a HORN at 55-70 mph on the freeway. Took it to the toyota dealership and they couldn’t figure it out, then basically told me, ‘hey its a sealed transmission, there is nothing we can do to repair it, so ride it out til it starts hard shifting or breaks down then spend $5,000 on a new transmission.’ Real shame just thought I’d put my truck’s story here
thanks now i know where the sound comming
Definitely I'm going to check mine I changed oil atf so many things couldn't get it fixed. The problem I was the only one who could hear it and I knew the sound which it was producing before this sound was foreign
What was it
@@davidromerovlogs5039 it was one of the pulley from the belt, changed it and no more noise
Thanks so much I own a trailblazer making this sounds thank you again and thanks You Tube 😀
This is the sound my gmc truck is making
Hi,
I also have this sound coming from my Camry 2007, what do you recommend i do, I have changed the auto tensioner roller bearing but the sound still persists.
I got this problem after I accidentally running on a curb😅
my 2006 Chevrolet Impala power steering pump pully noise i need a good man like u to fix it lol
I have same sound issue when the AC ON seriously annoying.its hard to drive when ac is On in summers..i have hyundai petrol kappa engine and its not having idealer pully and having serpertine belt
Help! I have a 2005 dodge Durango 4.7 and I have that exact sound and it gets worse when I accelerate but only some times
Can I just put a skateboard wheel there
Thanks for the video.
Thank you kind sir. Awesome video and information. No more annoying noise.
My Impala with the 3.6L V6 has that noise when I first start up but seems to go away after a few minutes of driving.
Yes! I think my 7AFE has this issue!
Have you ever had to change the a/c compressor on the envoy? Does this pulley have anything to do with the a/c compressor?
Did it sound like it was in the front or rear of the vehicle @1road?
Pretty envoy. Great condition
Thank you. My one owner 04 Denali is making this noise. I believe this my 2nd. pulley with 205k.
Is that sound dangerous because mine does it while accelerating I hear it inside what should I pay for a transmission diagnosis
But hyundai gasoline 1.2 engine does not having idle pully then how to find culprit
I've had the same problem with my 2008 Envoy. This only occurs occasionally after I start the car. It goes away after a few miles. Is this the same issue?
